I’ve Been Cheating

October 21st, 2011 @ 2:34 pm by Mrs. Honey

On my wedding dress. And remember my wedding dress is Penelope, as named by Cinny, who is altering her. It’s been nearly two months since I had my fitting and I probably won’t have my dress back in my hands for at least another month or so. Le sigh. I’m going to preface the rest of this post with this statement: I l-o-v-e my dress, I truly do. And also this:

I had my dress for four months before I went for my fitting. I pulled her out to show her to a select few people, but I hadn’t tried her on again. I was nervous walking into my fitting. I hadn’t been able to find the right bra and I may have gained a pound or two. I stepped into the dress, and it was all good.

My lack of bra was solved by Cinny sewing in cups (yay, no bra!) and regardless of my extra pounds (gah! Southern food is not good for you!), she fit. I went over the basics of what I needed altered.

I stood there looking in the mirror, and there was just something missing…and it wasn’t the dress’s fault. It was how I saw myself in the dress. My hips looked big, my chest looked odd, my dress with shoes looked off, and I was freakin’ hot (seriously, how do you summer brides do it?!). I pushed the feelings aside and let Cinny do her thang, pinning and tucking so that it would fit me better. I didn’t even tell my mom how I was feeling because I felt guilty and wrong. I should have been stoked to see myself in my dress.

1. Dissatisfaction 2. Is that really me? 3. Getting things where they need to be 4. Looking better 5. It fits ME

Once she had the dress all pinned and tucked, I was finally feeling like the dress looked good on me. It’s amazing what a properly fitted dress can do!

Cinny first pinned the skirt where it needed to be and then after I had ok’ed all of the pinning, she needed to take a look at just how she was going to raise the skirt. This was the first time she had worked with this dress (is that good or bad?). Then Cinny made my heart stop, she said “Ohhh I’m not sure we can raise this skirt.” *Heart pounding. Awkward silence* I bought the dress because I was assured that the skirt could be raised; and where it sat on me as-is was not okay. It made me super-dooper hippy and made my body non-proportional—not how a bride wants to look on her wedding day.

What Cinny did next was take a razor to my beloved dress.

Yes, a razor:

See how far the skirt is from my hips?!

After razoring on my dress she declared she could in fact take the skirt up. Hugest.sigh.of.relief.ever. We agreed on the whats and the whens, then I paid a deposit and left my dress in good hands with loads of faith that the next time I get to see her will be better than this time.

Now, here I am, two months later: devoted reader of Weddingbee and addicted to Pinterest. Between dress posts on Weddingbee and new pins daily on Pinterest, I’ve developed a crush on a couple new dresses. Shhh don’t tell!

Taffeta, full skirt, flower belt. And pockets. A dress style I never considered and also never tried on. I began to wonder if this shape would be better on my body, if it’s more bridal, if I should have actually done more shopping before purchasing. I feel guilty—like my poor dress is off in some shop being made to perfectly fit me and I’m kind-of second guessing her. I say kind-of because I don’t regret buying my dress; I know I will love it once it’s all said and done. I look back at pictures of the first time I put MY dress on and I remember that immediate feeling of “yes, this is it.”

I think the combination of not having the most ideal first fitting, not having my dress in my home, and the absurd amount of beautiful wedding dress images has caused my bridal eyes to wander. Please come back to me, Penelope!

This is normal right, hive?! Did you have a less-than-stellar first fitting? Have you “cheated” on your wedding dress?

I think this is normal, as I have had similiar thoughts about my dress!

PS. I LOVE the Wtoo Mimi (the first pic) and I often dream about it, but then I remember my dress and how ‘me’ it really is and I don’t regret it at all!

I made myself swear that I will not look at another dress after I find the one. I am so nervous about second guessing myself!!!

I had the same feelings as you did (and looked at very similar dresses actually…), but in the end, you know you made the right choice and your dress is going to be beautiful on you!

MIMI! I’ve been searching for that dress! I really want to try it on. I have currently found 3 dresses that I love - all totally different. Still deciding. Afraid to commit!

Despite the fact that I love the style of the last two (clearly), I think you said it all when you described the feeling on “yes, this is it”. I agree it is so easy to have a wandering eye with so much inspiration out there (especially with those bridal market videos!), but you have found a dress that is perfect for you, and I’m sure come the big day you will have no second thoughts!

I have seen some amazing dresses since I ordered mine, and as much as I drool over them, I know there is no way another dress, once on me, could make me feel the way mine does. It was meant from me and I knew it from the start. You are going to fall in love with your dress over and over again - believe me!

Oh man, I had six months between purchase and first fitting, and I was so worried I’d hate it! I remember asking the BM who went with me if I made the right decision so often.

In fact, I second-guessed it until the moment I put the altered dress on (are those really MY boobs?!? Is my waist REALLY that tiny???).

Once it’s sewn up and you try it on again, you’ll have that “YES!” feeling all over again. I know it. You were so excited about the dress when you found it :)

Those are my crush dresses! I actually tried them on as well and they were super flattering. Like you I also have my dress (ordered online, NWT) that I LOVE. It’s so hard to quit looking and second guessing.

I loved my dress, but if our wedding would have been slightly different could have worn at least two other gowns. Too many gorgeous dresses to choose from!

I went through exactly the same thing, your dress (from what we can see) is beautiful on you!

I can totally imagine what you are going through. Whenever I have doubts I just go to my mom and dad’s house and look at my dress. But since yours is being altered, you can’t do that…and that must be tough! But you look gorgeous, darling! Just remember that!

OMG, thank goodness I’m not alone… I lust over dresses all the time and sometimes even daydream about how much I could get for my dress if I sold it now and bought a new one… but the organic reaction I got when I tried on my Vera and broke into tears and truly felt for the first time like “the future Mrs. Sendek” cannot be replaced by any other…

It’s very parallel to what we are going through during this journey into marraige. As much as we love our future hubby, it’s a natural reaction when you see a stunningly handsome man or have a witty interaction with someone to get a similar feeling …. but that’s what makes your decision so valuable… it is yours and you must be dedicated to it because it is precious and irreplacable.

It’s funny that you called it “cheating” to look at other dresses. I felt so guilty - not only did I find another dress I wanted to try on after I bought mine, I made an appointment and snuck out to try it on ALONE, without telling my MOH or anyone else! I totally felt like I was cheating! (Although I admitted it to MOH later.)

But I came back more certain - as though I was reassured about my original dress choice. I figure it was last-minute regret about not having tried on one more style, and I’m glad I did it because now I feel more certain about the one I bought. The one I tried on didn’t “wow” me the way I had started to think it might, so I’m glad I know that. Like everyone else says, your choice was your choice and there’s a reason you made it in the first place!

It’s easy to cheat on your dress, especially because there are so many amazingly beautiful dresses out there! I certainly had my moments of “cheating,” but I never forgot that my dress was also awesome. As is yours! You are going to work it, girl!

I totally get it. With the whole nonsense with my dress (namely the missing buttons) and having so many wedding dresses surrounding me in magazines, stores, online.. it was only natural to peruse and kinda fall in love with a few dresses that aren’t MY dress. Then I try mine on and just know I did indeed make the right choice.. even more so once I get it taken in a bit! I guarantee that you will just love your dress and the way you look in it on your big day.

Don’t worry, don’t worry, don’t worry…I felt the same way after my second fitting. My tailor let the dress out WAY too much (I needed like 1/2″ and she let it out like 4″) and the dress just didn’t look like my dress anymore. I cried as soon as I was out of the shop and stressed for the whole next week. But tailors have magical skills and the next week my dress was even more stunning than I imagined it would be. I’m sure your dress will work out similarly and once its finished and you try it on again you will feel very sure that Penelope is the one for you. :)

@mittens111211: That dress is SO pretty, it’s no wonder so many of us love it!
@Miss Ladyfingers: Hehe, I agree!
@SaraP2012: That’s a good call, I should do that starting NOW!
@Mrs. Pony: Good taste ;) And yes, I just need my dress back!
@miss yellow lab: I think that Mimi is 2010 (maybe earlier). Good luck with your search, you will find the ONE!
@cosmo_gmr: Phew, it happens to the best of us!
@Miss Dalmatian: You have fabulous taste…and ya the videos didn’t help either!
@Miss Sunhat: You are so right…I can drool but I know they won’t look AS good on me as mine does.
@ookbob: Oh thank you for the encouragement, this is what I anticipate to happen…that it will fit me perfectly!
@Mrs. Pain au Chocolat: Ditto! I think about that often, if my dress was in another season or style what kind of dress I would have.
@Rachel G.: So hard to stop looking!
@Mrs. Teaspoon: Thanks teaspoon!
@Miss Doe: Thanks Doe, I do just need her back!
@futuremrssendek: It’s all in the feeling and why we picked our dresses (and man!).
@Mrs. Jaguar: Thanks Jaguar!
@Bias: So funny that we can feel guilty for looking at other dresses, only in the bridal world right?!
I love that you tried another one but it confirmed your original love :)
@Mrs. Parasol: Thanks lady!
@Miss Fox: Yessss. They aren’t *my* dress, love that.
@lisaelanna: They totally have magical skills!! Can’t wait to go back!
