About Mrs. Mole

The Proposal!

October 21st, 2011 @ 5:12 am by Mrs. Mole

Last year, Mr. Mole and I were living in Milwaukee. We moved there—or, more accurately, I moved us there—because I was offered a teaching job at a high school. To put a positive spin on things, I can say that the job gave me three things:

1. A supreme appreciation for the hard work that teachers do, both in and out of the classroom
2. A clear indication that teaching at the high school level was not the right career for me
3. An excellent excuse for a relaxing vacation at an all-inclusive resort

Little did I know that I would also be planning my engagement trip!

The Proposal! : wedding las vegas proposal rings Mol11

Spoiler!

My first experience with all-inclusive resorts was in August 2009 when my mom took my sister and me on a vacation to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I was worried that I would get bored at the Marival Resort; after all, I tend to plan trips for myself that involve lots of sightseeing, walking, and exploring. Could I really spend five consecutive days just “relaxing”? Yes. Yes, I could. I loved it! We spent the entire time lying on the beach, drinking blended drinks, and reading books. I came back with a great tan and a huge desire to go back—but, next time, with Mr. Mole. So we went together in May 2010. We stayed at the Riu Palace Pacifico and had a blast!

The second trip: less tan, more red

So, when it came to planning that relaxing vacation, we didn’t have to think twice about the destination. We decided to go back to Mexico for spring break. Woo! This time, we found a great deal for an AI resort in Riviera Maya. Our first resort ended up being oversold, so we were bumped (upgraded!) to Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita. Woo again!

We got to the airport on April 16th bright and early, allowing us plenty of time to continue our tradition of taking airport self-portraits.

The Proposal! : wedding las vegas proposal rings Mol31

There is a decent chance that we will do this in a wedding photo.

After landing in Cancun, we discovered that one perk of staying at Zoetry is getting picked up from the airport in style in a white Lincoln Navigator, complete with a cup holder large enough to fit a bottle of champagne. Which it did. We arrived at the resort to find that it was just as beautiful as all of the pictures online. Our room was not yet ready, so we decided to eat a leisurely lunch and then walk around the grounds. The concierge offered to store our luggage during this period. I immediately dropped my bag, but Mr. Mole continued to grip on to his. I tried to encourage him to store his duffel so we could relax, but he was insistent on not letting it out of his sight. (In hindsight: duh.)

Pool, beach, restaurant

Soon our room was ready, and we discovered that it was just as wonderful as the rest of the property. I was particularly excited about the large soaking tub. I was busy exploring the room and unpacking when Mr. Mole opened his duffel bag. He pulled out a small box. I didn’t process what was happening until he was down on one knee, asking me to marry him.

It was a beautiful proposal: not because of the grandeur of the place, but because of the sincerity of his words. They were straightforward and true. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

I couldn’t have asked for a better ring, either!

Zoetry must anticipate that these things happen at their resorts because they offer free international calling. We took advantage of that perk to call all of our friends and family later that night. (Interestingly enough, my sister took advantage of the same thing when she got engaged at a Zoetry in Punta Cana the spring before! We grew up to be more alike than we imagined.) Like the Generation X/Yers we are, we also updated our Facebooks in the business center.

The rest of the vacation was wonderful: snorkeling, catamaran boat rides, food poisoning. Yeah, that’s right. I spent the next three days intermittently throwing up. I could barely eat, let alone drink mango tangos by the pool. Mr. Mole also had a run-in with one of the resort’s “tamed” parrots; it bit him hard on the ear and threw his sunglasses to the ground. But, honestly, nothing could ruin that trip. We were in a place that we loved, in love. We were engaged!

Did your fiance or husband propose on vacation? Care to share your story? (I am a sucker for engagement stories!)

My husband proposed on the waterfront in Charleston, SC - mini vaycay…looking back the weekend away was strictly for the proposal haha - i love engagement stories too and yours is so sweet! i love that he wouldnt let that bag out of his site! My husband kept my ring in his pocket for hours without the box (too bulky) while we walked around downtown Charleston and ate dinner. Afterwards he said he was super nervous about losing it.

aww what a sweet story! I love that he proposed as soon as you got into your room, he must have been so excited that he just couldn’t wait!! Your ring is gorgeous too. My fiance proposed when we were vacationing in VA beach this past summer. I had a feeling something was up because he was so adamant about taking a walk on the beach after we ate at this really nice restaurant. Well sure enough, a few minutes into our walk, he got down on one knee, said the sweetest things I’ve ever heard, and we were engaged! It was so beautiful, right around sunset time, it was just perfect! Looking forward to more of your posts :)

Awww what a sweet story! Congratulations! My fiance did not propose on vacation, but there was a reason. He recreated our first date and proposed at the end. It was very sweet…very us.

Looks like a wonderful trip and memorable experience/proposal! Mr. E was going to propose on vacation but worried about the ring with flights and the port for our cruise so he did it a couple of weeks before.

Well, not so much a vacation, but out of the country we got engaged.
Our proposal story is longish - apologies in advance.

He and I set off with a team of 5 others on a church mission trip to Santa Cruz, Bolivia in July. We worked long days painting, building, interacting with children, and bonding with our team. The team set out for a bumpy and curvy 6-hour ride through the mountains to a small town called Postrervalle (means “The Valley Beyond”). We arrived at the town of about 100 people and stayed in the children’s home.
One of the days the team had some time to walk around the town and then head to the nearby waterfalls. Everyone had a great time taking pictures at the big waterfall and some even got in the freezing cold water to swim around. I never noticed that one of the missionaries, had left. He had drove back to the home to get the ring box which my guy had forgot. Later the team walked closer to the smaller waterfall in which the water came out from a tunnel in the mountain. A team member said that my guy and I should take a picture at the smaller one. I went first and thought half way up that I couldn’t climb any further. My guy said it was a good spot to stop, but I was determined to climb a bit more. With him still to my back, I got to a good height. Still looking up at the waterfall, I thought he was making general, yet sweet, conversation about our relationship. I then remarked that I couldn’t go any higher and the place will have to do for the picture. When I turned around, he was on his knee holding the ring box open and asked the infamous question, “Will you marry me?” I of course said yes. We hugged and then I said in his ear, “I probably smell like bugspray.” We laughed.

What a great story! We got engaged in Salzburg, right after a beautiful concert of strings in the castle overlooking the city. It was a dream, but you could have taken away everything, and the proposal would still have been as beautiful.

This is a great story! I love how the happiness of being engaged outweighed the food poisoning and the evil parrot!

P.S. Not going to lie, I just clicked on your links to look at as potential honeymoon spots :)

We were on the great American road trip to Yellowstone National Park - where he eventually proposed at the beautiful lower falls! I was so surprised! Afterwards I noticed he was a lot more relaxed about the trip. Maybe you noticed that too?

@totheislnds: What a sweet story, yourself! I know that I could never walk around with a ring in my pocket like that without being super jumpy!
@jennyDtobe: Oh, I bet your sunset proposal on the beach must have been amazing! It sounds like such a romantic setting.
@Mrs. Pony: Thanks! I am itching for a chance to go back. As soon as possible. Now? (Sigh.)
@missfenway: Wow, what a sweet guy you have! Congrats.
@Mrs. Elephant: The best thing about that plan is that the vacation turned into a celebration as well!
@elsie: Thanks so much! :)
@paw: Haha. What a great thing to be able to say!
@PrettyRoyalT: Amazing! It sounds like it was a wonderful trip for a wide variety of reasons.
@Jenni: It does sound like you have quite the romantic on your hands. Congrats!
@Miss Fox: Now you can always celebrate Sundays and think fondly on those pjs! ;)
@Queen2bee: Oh, I really love that sentiment about how the proposal is special regardless of all of the extra “perks” — and it sounds like your perks were pretty great!
@Miss Honey: Me too! It was a great time.
@Miss Dalmatian: Go for it! I’d recommend all of those spots. We are going back to Mexico for our honeymoon too! (This time, we’ll just watch out for the parrots and the hamburgers.)
@Mrs. Starfish: What a great mini-vacation! I love those short trips away; sometimes they feel even better than their longer versions.
@queenfrostine07: Congrats! What a great spot. I definitely noticed that he was less nervous afterwards. After all, he didn’t have to worry about proposing any more — or losing the ring!

What an adorable story! And I love that Mr. M wouldn’t let go of his bad. That sucks about the food poisoning, but you have such a great attitude! Sounds like your vacation was the perfect way to celebrate your newly engaged bliss!

@Miss Cucumber Sandwich: Definitely do! It was such a beautiful, relaxing place. (So, if you are the type who wants to have nighttime activities or shows, I’d skip it.) I heard that Mrs. Snow also went to Zoetry for her honeymoon and loved it.
