About Mrs. Mole

Vegas, Baby!

October 22nd, 2011 @ 12:50 pm by Mrs. Mole

Let’s be honest, guys. When you hear the phrase “Vegas Wedding,” what immediately pops into mind?

If you pictured any (or even all) of the above, you are not alone. A lot of people associate Vegas weddings with Elvis officiants, quickie ceremonies, and/or drunken mistakes. So why in the world are Mr. Mole and I getting married there? Is my dream to get married by Elvis in a drive-through chapel at 3:30 AM while sealing our marriage with some Apple Pucker shots? No, not at all! Here are some great reasons why we ultimately decided to get married in Vegas—and why we think that more people should consider getting married there as well.

How cool with this be as a background shot?

First, Las Vegas is a perfect destination for out-of-towners. Mr. Mole and I have lived together—and made friends—in three different states. Our families are located on all sides of the country: eastside, westside, midwestside. So, no matter where we decided to get married, it was going to be a destination for a sizable portion of the guest list. Vegas offers cheap flights, a variety of different hotel options, and millions of things to do. I know that my mom is excited about seeing the lights of the strip; some of our friends are looking forward to taking a side trip to Red Rock Canyon; and I am planning to hit a spa or two. And, honestly, who wants to fly to windy Chicago in the middle of a snowy winter?

Second, Vegas is close enough for us to visit whenever we need to take a planning trip (read: a weekend vacation). It takes us about four hours to drive there from our home in Los Angeles. Although we’ve been able to accomplish most of the wedding planning thus far over the phone or computer, we are glad that we were able to do some things—like seeing our ceremony space or tasting our menu—in person. Luckily, Mr. Mole’s parents live in Henderson part of the year, so they’ve also been able to help us out. We really appreciate them!

Third, Vegas offers up some gorgeous ceremony spaces. You can exchange vows at the top of the Eiffel Tower. You can get married in front of the rotating windows of the Stratosphere. You can even get married in front of a shark tank at Mandalay Bay!

We decided to go in a more traditional direction and get married at the Wynn. The Wynn has always been one of our favorite casinos. After doing some internet research, we also found that the Wynn Wedding Salons were our favorite as well. (In fact, this was one of the fastest wedding decisions that we made.) We were impressed by the elegance of the space and the wide variety of packages offered. We also liked the fact that we would have exclusive use of the salon during our ceremony. Our ceremony itself is going to be in the Lavender Salon, the largest of the chapel spaces. It holds up to 120 guests.

Fourth, Vegas allows you to be as hands-on or as hands-off with your wedding planning as you would like. You can get married spur of the moment, or you can plan for years. You can do an intimate ceremony and champagne toast, or you can go for a more traditional shindig with a big ballroom reception. The choice is yours! As for us, we are doing a hands-kinda-on approach. We picked a ceremony package, but we are writing our own vows and choosing our own readings. We picked the colors of the flowers, but we told our consultant to arrange them however she sees fit. We picked the “wedding dinner” package for our restaurant reception, but we are adding cones and cones of delicious frites to the passed appetizers. (I can’t wait to post about our restaurant! It’s one of my favorites.)

In all, we are thrilled about our decision. Would you ever decide to get married in Vegas? Why or why not?

I actually totally love the idea of it! We were in Vegas for the first time last year and just LOVED it - having the “Eiffel Tower” in the background for pics? Yes please!!

our official (secret) wedding was at graceland chapel! since we were going to have a “proper” wedding later that year, we decided to have our legal wedding be as fun and cheesy as we wanted it to be. elvis walked me down the aisle singing “love me tender” it was priceless.

honestly, if I had to do it over, I would in a heartbeat. it was amazing.

Please can I come to your wedding? ;)

I LOVE Vegas. Have been there a few times now and I think it’d be a great place for a wedding. I tried to convince my engaged little brother to get married there, no dice.

If we didn’t get married at home, I’m pretty sure it would have been Vegas. Our family loves Vegas! My parents actually renewed their vows for their 25th anniversary in Vegas.

I’ve never been to Vegas, but I think your wedding will be so classy!

I have to admit to a secret desire to go to Vegas with Mr CB and get ‘married’ again (or renew vows or something) by Elvis. It’s JUST. SO. KITSCH. I love it.

You have totally changed the way I think about Vegas weddings, Miss Mole! I knew that they weren’t all Britney Spears-esque, but I didn’t know too much about them. It sounds like Vegas is the perfect location for you to get married, and I have no doubt that your wedding will be amazingly beautiful!

Vegas is amazing. There is something for everyone, even if you don’t like gambling and parting, there is tons and tons of stuff to do. My last time there I stayed at Tropicana because I decided to splurge on food and entertainment instead of the hotel. I cannot recommend the Tropicana enough for the budget-conscious non-smoker. If you stay in the tower that is in the front, you don’t even have to walk through a casino to get to the elevators.

Schedule lots of time for photos because there are so many places that would be beautiful. This sounds crazy, but last time I was there it was to meet with some chefs (pretty early in the morning) so I got to see Vegas at dawn. It is beautiful in the gentle light of the sun just rising. It might not work for wedding photos but it would produce stellar photos. Bonus - you don’t have to worry about people because it is the same time most of them are just passing out.

@Miss Fox: Isn’t Vegas a lot of fun? We always have a great time there, even though neither of us are gamblers.
@janie janie: What a fun wedding idea!
@PrettyRoyalT: Thanks for the link! I am bookmarking it for some ideas.
@Mrs. Jaguar: Haha! Too bad it’s such a long flight. ;)
@Mrs. Elephant: How cute! My father got remarried in Vegas as well.
@Aud1628: Thanks for following along! I appreciate your comments. :)
@Miss Aardvark: It’s also a great vacation spot in the winter. There are often cheap MKE - LV flights.
@paw: Haha, thanks so much!
@Mrs. Cinnamon Bun: That’s a fun idea for a vow removal. And Vegas has tons of possibilities for kitsch!
@Mrs. Pony: Wow, thanks for the compliment!
@Mrs. Parasol: Thanks! I appreciate it.
@carol: Wow, great tips! I am going to have to keep the Tropicana in mind for our next scouting trip.

Amazing choice! My cousin and his wife got married in Vegas a few years ago, and it was SO MUCH FUN. I had never been, and despite the fact that I wasn’t even 21 so my activities for the weekend were limited, I still had a complete blast. I’m sure your guests will love it!

My sister got married in Vegas, and it was quick and to the point, but still very sweet. We went out for a fancy lunch with our party of 20 (my immediate! family). It was pretty awesome. Also, my coworker just attended a beautiful wedding at MGM, and she said if she had it to do all over again, she would do it in Vegas. Thumbs up! I can’t wait to see yours!

I like the classy route of Vegas. I’ve always wanted to get hitched at a cheesy chapel (even if I was already married) just to say I did it, haha/

I don’t want to be a party pooper. And I did get to your blog because it came up as a suggestion on my blog to link to yours when I did a post about weddings in Vegas and my view has always been its the fake-est place in the world, why would you want such a pretty beautiful thing as a marriage begin there? But then again, its just my view.
But looking at your reason..hmm. I might change my mind. When I think how nice you are to think of your guests as well, I am kinda glad you are doing it in Vegas versus rather than in Hawaii or some far fetched place and then expecting all your friends to show up there.

@Miss Dalmatian: I’m glad to hear that your cousin’s wedding was a lot of fun! It’s actually funny that we are celebrating with a group of non-drinkers — including Mr. Mole — in Vegas. ;)
@Queen2bee: Glad to hear! I think our ceremony might be on the long side for Vegas (30 minutes?) but we also liked the idea of keeping things to the point.
@Future Army Wife: Haha. You can always do a vow renewal in Vegas!
@PG: Haha, no worries! Everyone has different opinions of what a wedding should be like or look like. I guess we also think of Vegas as “that place where Mr. Mole’s parents live,” so we don’t necessarily have the same negative associations with it. @Miss Honey: Thanks, Miss Honey! I can’t wait to see your lovely wedding as well. :)
