Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

I did it anyway. And now I have less than zero confidence in weather forecasters (no offense, meteorological bees!), and a whole heap of anxiety about the weather.

439 People Told Me NOT To Check the Weather : wedding chapel hill Weather011 weather01

October 21st Weather Prediction / Screen shot from Weather.com

When I first started writing this post (on 10-21-2011) this was the forecast from Weather.com, whom I thought was the #1 weather authority. They themselves changed their mind about my wedding day weather no less than 5 times on October 21st, going from mostly cloudy to partly cloudy to scattered showers (the horror!) to mostly cloudy. Yes, I checked it, like, twenty seven times. What, is that a lot or something?

You might be thinking “Why are you freaking out, Magic? You are always so stressed! Take a chill pill, yo, that weather forecast looks fine!”

Fast forward from October 21st til now.

439 People Told Me NOT To Check the Weather : wedding chapel hill Intelli011 intelli01

Intellicast Forecast

The fact that there is a one percent chance of snow on our wedding day is really frightening. There should be NO chance of snow!!!

Here’s the bottom line. I’m hopeful it won’t rain (again, no trust in these wishy-washy forecasts) but I have realized it’s gonna be at least a bit chilly (and maybe downright cold), especially at night. Luckily, our venue has an enormous outdoor fireplace for s’mores, which we had already planned on doing…although, if it’s raining, that won’t work…

And we added heaters and side walls for our tent (for another $1100—awesome!). And we will now be having hot apple cider, or hot cider with spiced rum if you are so inclined.

If all else fails, we have our youth and our liquor to keep us warm.

Are you worried about the weather at your wedding? How often do you/did you check the forecast leading up to your wedding day?

Ahh! I totally hear you on the wishy washy weather folks. You can always dance your selves warm! :)

I am getting married in April in the Michigan which means anything from snow to 80 and everything in between (or all of the above). So I am a bit worried about weather as well.

As I side note, that fireplace is AMAZING!

Although my wedding is still 10 1/2 months away, I do worry about being in peak hurricane season for the northeast.

I LOVE your outdoor fireplace!!! Sounds like you’ve covered all of the bases quite *magically* :-)

Yay for youth and liquor! The week of my wedding, which was on a Friday, there was a heat wave here in CT. On the Tuesday, it was 103, which is unheard of. Luckily, the weather broke on Thursday. But the weekend before, the forecast for my wedding day had 50 chance of showers and thunderstorms. It turned out sunny, gorgeous and no rain at all. Just remember, as the son of a friend of mine famously said when he was little… “Weatherman lies.”

Oh man, I remember checking every online weather source I could and only liking the site that gave the most favorable forecast. I hope it doesn’t rain on your wedding day!

I’ve heard from multiple photographers that cloudy skies make better pictures!

Liquor + dancing = warm guests :) I’ll be sending good weather thoughts your way regardless.

@mak418: Bahahaha. “Weatherman lies.” Gotta love it!

@Mrs. Elephant: Yeah right now I think wunderground.com is my fave!

@Miss Ticket: Yay! How ya holdin’ up, Miss Ticket? Are you going a little crazy? I am!

I would tell you not to check the forecast either. And then I would go on weather.com today (like I did) 12 days before the wedding, and attempt to extrapolate what the weather would be like based on what it’s forecast to be like 10 days from now. I think we all check the forecast. But don’t let it have any power over you! The fact that today, there is a 40% chance of rain four days before my wedding made me more than a little nervous. And saying that there’s a 40% chance of it raining 8 days from now which makes me nervous about the weather 12 days from now sounds like I’m saying that 60% of the time, it works every time. And if you know what that’s from, then maybe I’ve just made you laugh.

I’m getting married outside in San Antonio in March. This year it was GORGEOUS, i think i can deal with whatever temps we get, but rain i’m nervous about. I don’t want to pay $1000 for tents :(

Love it - booze and dancing will definitely keep the guests warm!

I checked ours maybe once, the weather in Australia is so unbelievably unpredictable - I swear I could do a better job with a dart board!

Your posts always crack me up. “We have our youth and our liquor to keep us warm.” LOL. I’m sure it will be fine and the rain will clear right out since it’s been so wishy-washy. When they say showers possible I find it to be code for “we don’t really know, but if it rains we don’t want you to be PO-ed so let’s stick it in there for kicks.” Considering my wedding is in March on the East Coast I shouldn’t talk. I will probably have the exact same post as you in a few months swearing at the blizzard forecast on the 10-day. ha.

I think I worried a little bit, but honestly, it’s so not worth it because you just can’t control the weather. Be flexible with contingency plans, but hopefully you won’t have to use them! The only thing we had to change was move the photo booth because of the wind–it would have been knocked over in we left it outside! It ended up working out for the best because people danced where we would have left the photo booth (so it would have been way too cramped out there), and we found the perfect space for it inside.

I was checking the weather on my phone, at work, at home about 20 times a day. It rained for 7 days straight before our wedding day and even during our rehearsal. Luckily, we had plenty of sunshine on the day of with no rain. Phew! Then it rained again the day after. I pray you are as lucky and you have a great wedding!

I am totally going nuts lol. Weather.com says its going to be in the 80s but the actual weather is much cooler and very cloudy/foggy right now… I got to see pics from my Future Brother-In-Laws wedding tonight (wedding was last month) and the pics turned out SO amazing that the combination of flipping through them and a bit of wine helped calm me down quite nicely. Hang in there!

Hey! We’re looking at the same forecast for the same day and have the same sentiments as you! We’re having the ceremony outdoors in Saxapahaw, NC (about 20 minutes away from your venue.) For now, I’d be happy if it’s sunny and not rainy.

Happy Wedding!

I already know I will be a wreck checking the weather like 100 million times. But Magic, it is all going to turn out beautifully! Hot cider with spiced rum? S’mores? Yes, please! Sounds so fun!

@Miss Ladyfingers: used the word “extrapolate.” I love that.

Ever since our wedding eked its way into the 10 day forecast I have been checking the weather. We’ve gone from a high of 70 to 76 which I would be so jazzed about. However, the low is still 53(”real feel” = 49, thanks accuweather). Our reception is in a renovated barn that has no heating so we also will be relying on liquor and killer dance moves to keep us warm.

(ps yes, 53/49* is cold to us coastal southern california folks.)

yeah, I didn’t want to check the weather before my wedding either, but then there ended up being a hurricane the weekend before and some recommended evacuations (we live in CT–so that is not normal), so we had to start watching to figure out whether to stay or to go. We stayed and battened down the hatches, stocked up on water, batteries, and candles and then waited around to see who still had power and water for the wedding. (I didn’t think I would be doing hurrican prep and recovery in the days before the wedding, lol)

I thought we would have planned the wedding at a time when there is great weather–but stranger things can happen. Luckily, we still had the wedding as scheduled without a drop of rain, all our venues got back their power and water in time–and only a handful of other families were unable to make it because of the hurricane.

It was a wonderful and glorious day–and I was blessed it was the weekend it was and not the one before!

You can only do so much prep: just batten down the hatches, wait and see, and live the glorious day out to its fullest!
