My Hair Has Issues

October 24th, 2011 @ 8:02 am by Miss Doe

If you haven’t noticed by now, my hair is of the curly variety. I am incredibly worried about my hair on my wedding day. For good reason, too. Let me give you some background information so you can fully understand my concern. Today I present to you the trials and tribulations of this Doe’s hair. Or, in other words, my fur.

Might I add that this was difficult posting a few of these photos. They are by no means flattering photos of me. However, I have learned to laugh at myself. Therefore, in the name of blogging, I proudly and humbly present to you the story of my hair—hang on tight.

1. The adorable years started when I was just a little fawn. I had what some considered to be hair reminiscent of Shirley Temple (who I love, by the way).

2. It slowly transitioned into the poufy years. We were never quite sure how to handle my hair, so we kept it at a modest shoulder length that formed somewhat of a triangle. (I say we, because my mom was my hairstylist.)

3. My hair always had great versatility. It came in handy with Halloween costumes, I never needed to wear a wig! Sister Doe obviously had to wear wigs. She did rock that Pocahontas look, though. Also, how cute does Brother Doe look?

{If you didn’t guess, I am the witch. Next to me is Sis Doe and Bro Doe.}

4. The awkward years came and lasted a little too long in my opinion. It’s the years of the bangs and excessive amounts of mousse.

5. The real battle started to occur soon after I met Mr. Buck. I lost the bangs, but not the mousse. I was convinced that my hair needed to air dry to achieve maximum curliness with a minimum amount of frizz. This turned into a daily battle for me. One that I was determined to win. I would wake up every day to get ready for school at 4:30 AM to let my hair properly dry. It obviously did not work. Exhibit A: my driver’s license photo. I honestly have no excuse for this photo. I think my hair plotted against me this day. I mean, seriously, WHAT IS THAT?!

6. About halfway through high school, I discovered the flat iron. This was probably the worst thing that I have ever done to my hair. I straightened it every single day. At first it was long and looked nice, but then slowly my hair started to die and was fried. It became shorter and shorter…but I hadn’t cut my hair. It basically just started to fall out. I think what bothers me most looking back on pictures of me with straight hair is that I just don’t look like myself.

7. I entered the hippie years right after high school. I stopped straightening my hair and just let it grow out. I think I went two years before I got a haircut and actually evened out my hair color.

8. Being that my mom is a former hairdresser, she advised me to cut my hair and get a few highlights. That was definitely some good advice from mom (advice? demand?), because this is how I think my hair looks best. I also keep regular appointments with my hairdresser to keep my mass of hair in check.

I love my hair shorter, but that is not going to work for how I want my hair for the wedding. I started growing my hair out soon after we became engaged. It is starting to get pretty long.

My hairdresser still wants me to grow it out at least two more inches before the wedding. It.is.driving.me.CRAZY. I can’t handle this long-hair thing. It is constantly all up in my business and driving me bonkers. I am a staunch supporter of the post-wedding chop, and I can’t wait to hack it off.

My thoughts are constantly consumed by wedding hair nightmares. With my past hair history, I am so worried my hair will not cooperate on my wedding day. I am totally freaked out that I am going to have one big frizzy mess gracing my head on that day.

Are you growing your hair out for your wedding? Are you worried your hair will plot against you on your wedding day?

You have beautiful hair!! It’s so funny that old saying you want what you don’t have, girls with straight hair want curly hair and girls with curly hair want straight hair! I have finally come to love my hair too it’s between being straight and wavy but looks the best straight!

Miss Doe, I feel your frustration…I am also a fellow curly haired girl, and I just wanted to let you know that I too feel your pain and frustration…I had my hair trial 6 months before my wedding just to make sure that it would be great for my big day.

Awww, you were an adorable kid :) And don’t worry - high school pics = awkward for pretty much everyone :)

I am also growing my hair out, and trying not to dye it for the next year so it is healthy and natural. I tell you, the latter is KILLING me. I usually dye my hair every 4-6 months or so, and I miss the fun change of it :( I feel like it’ll be worth it in the end, but gah! I totally feel your pain. Your hair is looking lovely though!

Have you ever read “Curly Girl: The Handbook” by Lorrain Massey? If you haven’t, I strongly suggest it- it’s done wonders for my hair.

We have very similar hair histories! Mine is also insano curly and hard to handle. Its also very thick, and I have a lot of it. I went to a new hairdresser today and she was amazed at how thick it was, and didn’t believe me when I said it would take an hour to blow wave. It ended up taking TWO stylists 45 minutes to blow it out.

I really like your hair just past shoulder length, with the layers to loosen up the curls, it really suits you. :)

OMG! i have the SAME problem!!! your hair issues are an EXACT replica of mine. It’s like we’re living some parallel universe of hair hell. On Friday i actually had my fiance “perm” my hair, except we used bigger rods. I was hoping to achieve big sexy curls. unfortunately that’s not what happened…… I’ve begun to pray to the hair gods that my curls come back before next year or atleast the parts that just decided to be stick straight assimilate. You can check out my hair: i think you can just search for “happy black and nappy”. http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/happy-black-and-nappy

First off, your hair is gorgeous! I am also growing out my hair. I started awhile before I was engaged but that was necessary considering how slow it grows! It’s gotten pretty long, but it is still really thin. My awesome hair girl has mentioned trying extensions - she promises they will look natural and just fill out my hair so I can get the style I want. Is that something you could consider?

I feel ya, but I’m on the opposite side—I have super straight hair. I curled my hair this weekend to try on wedding dresses and get the whole look, and my curls were gone within about 35 minutes and I had a massive knot that formed underneath from the excessive hairspray :( Oh well, just hope for the best! I think your hair is beautiful !!!!

I’m jealous of your curls…I’ve got obnoxious waves and cowlicks. Boo. So, yes I feel your frustration with hair!

I second the curly girl handbook suggestion. It, and the DevaCurl line, totally changed my hair. I grew my hair out for the wedding, and today I am calling my stylist to re-schedule my next appointment. I can’t wait until late November to chop. I need it now!

My hair dresser wants me to have “long flowing mermaid hair. ” This translates into no length being chopped off since I got engaged - and our engagement is three years! It’s past my bra strap now, and I agree - so ready for the PWC.

For the record, I think you have gorgeous hair. And, the hard work of growing it out will all be worth it when the wedding comes :)

I’m only growing mine another couple inches because I want to look like ME on my big day. I’m doing a 40’s pin curl & finger wave style so my hair is pretty much already the right length for it. Good luck girl!

Wow! That is one amazing hair saga, and you have great courage for posting those high school pics (which are really cute…mine on the other hand, I have chucked down a black hole). You (and your hair) look particularly beautiful in that last picture.
While I can make no guarantees as to the good behavior of your hair on your wedding day, I am confident that you or your hairdresser will be able to style it beautifully, perhaps through the use of begging/threats/bridal ire/lots of hair product.

OK, that Shirley Temple look alike picture is to die for! You are adorable, Miss D! And I love your short-ish/highlighted go-to do. It is perfect for you! I’m already looking forward to your PWC pictures–as well as seeing what you decide to do with your hair for the wedding. :)

I also do the curly girl system, though not to a
T since I’ve been dying it for a year or so. It helps for sure. Anyone have specific conditioner or product recommendations? (NWR–I’m leaving that up to a professional!)

Ohhh I feel you so much on this one. I have crazy poof hair myself that stresses me endlessly when it comes to special occasions (like my wedding). But, how cute are those flashback pics! You’ve definitely gotten a handle on your hair beautifully. Your hair is gorg. It does take us big-haired ladies some time to get the right equation.

@Aud1628: Haha it is true. I use to want straight hair, but now I am totally fine with my hair…I look strange any other way!
@mija22: I hope it went well! I can’t wait to have my hair trial :)
@sarahbabs: Thank you! And you are tough just letting your hair be! I am growing mine out, but I am not so good about not touching the color hehe. I get highlights….but only small ones, nothing crazy :)
@tashajaysen: Funny thing, when I was younger my mom permed my sister’s hair. Well, I got jealous and I wanted my hair permed too…even though it was already curly. So my mom permed my hair, but it was so strange. It totally changed the pattern of my hair. And your hair is gorgeous by the way!
@Miss Dalmatian: Thank you! And sadly, extensions aren’t much of an option. The curl patterns are just so different than mine. But I have seen other girls with extensions and they always look awesome! I can’t wait to see yours :)
@Stephyb: Haha, yeah I have the opposite problem of you. If I straighten my hair, I typically avoid all moisture or any random kid in the neighborhood with a squirt gun. I stay FAR AWAY because if my hair even senses water, it kinks up.
@Miss Honey: Haha we all have our own crazy hair issues! But your hair is very pretty, Honey!
@amarissak: No, I haven’t. I’ll check it out! Thanks!
@Roux: Oh my goodness, you must have a ton of hair! When mine was shorter, I could dry it in 10 minutes. Now that it is long, it takes about 20 minutes. Blech!
@lovekiss: I actually tried the Deva line…unfortunately it was a total no go for my hair. My hair rebelled against it. Although I do like their gel, that works great on my hair!
@red_pepper_gal: “Long flowing mermaid hair” …I LOVE that!!! I bet your hair is insanely gorgeous!
@Mrs. Pony: Thanks, Pony! I am trying to also keep that in perspective :)
@GingerMac: I am having my hair up which means I need to have a ton of hair to work with. I look like me with long and short hair. I love the pin up look, that is going to look awesome!
@catero: Hahahaha thanks…yeah, some of those pictures = awful. And thank you, that is very sweet of you! I sure hope it turns out okay :)
@Mrs. Parasol: Thanks, Parasol! I can’t wait to post my PWC! :)
@Roe: I have tried everything from cheap stuff to high end stuff. I am not opposed to spending money on good hair products but honestly…what my hair likes the best is the Pantene Pro V curly system. I also use It’s A 10 miracle leave in treatment (fairly pricey, but I loved it.) I also prefer to use Kenra hairspray, that seems to work the best for me. But as for shampoo conditioner and mousse? Pantene all the way..
@Miss Porcupine: Ahhh, I have never heard it explained better! “Time to get the right equation…” Exactly! It does take some time to figure it out. And thank you! I love your hair too, Porcupine! :)

I have just the opposite problem with my hair. It is thin and limp. After three hair trials with all sorts of different hair accessories, my stylist is going to resort to adding a lot of extensions and trying to make it look like I have some hair. I am with StephyB, tiny strands of straight hair….all I can do is “let it bee…let it beeee!”
