Hair on Trial

October 24th, 2011 @ 1:38 pm by Mrs. Sunhat

Yesterday was our first bridal shower so I thought it would be the perfect time to have a hair trial. Not only would I be testing out a wedding day look, but my hair would look great for the shower!

Mr. Ball Cap’s cousin, L, has been doing my hair since I moved to Dyer. She recently had a baby and now works out of her home. I take every chance I can to get over there for a baby fix!

At my last appointment with her, I gave her a print out of looks I had found online. I was drawn to a similar style over and over again.

These pictures are all over wedding websites and Pinterest boards and many brides before me have been inspired by them as well. I love the wave and curl without it being too stuffy or structured. My hair has a slight natural wave to it anyway (if I don’t straighten it) and a style similar to these would compliment my overall wedding day look.

I didn’t take a before picture, but here is a picture of me with my hair down from a September shopping trip in Chicago. It has gotten so long!

I think this look balances out my face pretty well! The feedback from the ladies at the shower was all very positive and Mr. Ball Cap thought it was pretty sassy. As this was just the trial and we only had a limited amount of time, the style wasn’t as secure as it will be on the big day. After a couple of hugs at the shower, the bottom started to slip out. I’m sure L will add tons more bobby pins.

I definitely wanted an up-do and the style needed to be strong enough to hold my veil–that sucker is heavy! The final look on the wedding day will be a little more polished, but this was a great trial run. L will highlight my hair a few weeks prior to the wedding to hide some of those roots and add dimension to my color.

Any suggestions on improving this look even more? Do you think I should tweak or change anything?

I have a similar face-shape to yours and when I go for curls I prefer to have them a little more restrained in the back.

If it were me (probably goes without saying, of course) I would either tighten up the curl “anchors” to gather them more to the back of the head rather than letting the fullness be seen on the sides OR anchor the curls farther down the back of the head, more along the lines of a messy chignon, and let the fullness peek out at the earline and below.

I find either of those strategies more flattering to my face, since the all-round fullness of the hair tends to amplify my cheeks instead of my cheek bones.

this is lovely, the curls seem much “tighter” than you had mentioned you wanted. maybe the use of a larger curling iron will produce softer curls. you will need to pull it tighter around the sides to get a better grip in the back to anchor your LOVELY veil! cant wait to hear the updates!

I agree with thirdtimebride, above. I would ask Mr. Ball Cap’s cousin to pull the hair back a little more. To me it looks very poofy around the sides, and in your inspiration pictures the girls’ hair is fairly smooth until it gets to the back and also anchored further down towards their neck rather than just curls all over in the back.

It also looks like their curls were mostly just at the bottom rather than all over in the back. Having the curls a little more concentrated would help create a good spot to anchor the veil or put a hair comb (which that style looks stunning with).

But I think overall your hair trial turned out pretty well and if you loved it, its really only your opinion that matters. :)

That first pic was one of my inspiration shots too! The trial looks great, make sure you have some bobby pins and hairspray on hand just in case of any flyaways!

I think you should have her pull some more of the hair into the bun shape that you have in all of your inspiration photos, as I think it looks a little bit unfinished with some of those curls on the outside don’t look secure. I am a hairstylist and no amount of hairspray is going to keep those curls in place if they’re not secured with pins. It’s a great start, just needs a little refining I think!

Hmm, I agree with some of the PP that it might look nice if you pull the sides in more. The inspiration from TheBlushingBride seems pretty different. I think your stylist could rein some curls in more.

I’m glad you liked your trial and hope this gives you the confidence about what happens on the big day! :) I really like how it looks with the veil!

I agree with the other ladies, that you should have less fullness visible from the front, and even from the top, if that’s part of what you really love about the inspiration photos you posted.

My best friend got married about 2 weeks ago with a hairstyle similar to your 3rd picture (SweetPeaandSweetTea). It was really beautiful, but there was no actual curl. The stylist kind of wove the hair loosely, collecting into a side chignon on the right side, and then just looped and pinned the hair (no having to worry about curls falling!). And, it was very secure. She got married outside with 20+ mph winds, and afterwards, she still looked flawless. Just a thought. :)

Oh, the trickiest part of her ‘do was the veil placement, but once they got it centered in back, similar to where yours was in the pic, it didn’t budge, either!

Good luck!
