Ms. Ferris Wheel's Picture
Ms. Ferris Wheel, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Psychologist Engagement Date: May 23 and 28, 2010 (one for each of us!) Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Parc55 Hotel (city lights ceremony, ballroom reception) About Me: Born in the Southeast, educated in the Northeast, and over-educated on the West Coast, I finally earned my city-girl credentials and have put down roots in gorgeous San Francisco. I’m a raging perfectionist with a lightning quick wit and a terrible sense of both time and direction. Our wedding task list is endlessly growing because of my predilection to think that DIY projects I can make = DIY projects I should make (so not true!). I always go to bed wishing there were more hours in the day to enjoy all the things I adore, whether that be hobbies, friends, my career, our two dogs, or Mr. Ferris Wheel. Ours is a story of a non-traditional couple living an oddly traditional life planning a not-so-traditional wedding in this city we adore. Together we are bustin’ out all of our best skills (and some of our worst ones) to plan a laid-back-chic DIY-craftastic love-alicious affair!
About Ms. Ferris Wheel

It's Feeling Real Now, Folks! : wedding legal san francisco 10451 1045

Yep, today Mr. FW and I made the arduous ten minute trek to City Hall, and we completed the shockingly easy task of applying for a marriage license. As we walked up the front steps of the building I recalled that the last time I was actually inside the City Hall rotunda was a few years ago when one of my friends married his husband during the brief period of time when gay marriage was legal in California. On that day the entire building was full of lights, cameras, press members, happy couples, and excited guests. But today the place was silent, with only our voices echoing off the marble.

There were no signs directing us where to go, so we wandered around until we found the unassuming corridor with the door marked ’County Clerk.’ We actually arrived on time for our appointment, and if you know me at all, you know what a miracle that is.

Mr. FW lovingly offered to fill out the form for us since I was pretty busy snapping pictures of the whole process. My favorite part of the license application was this: “At the time of application for a marriage license, one or both parties to the marriage may elect to change the middle or last names, or both, by which that party wishes to be known after solemnization of the marriage… Parties may adopt any of the following last names: the current last name of the other spouse; the last name of either spouse given at birth; a name combining into a single last name all or a segment of the current last name or the last name of either spouse given at birth; a hyphenated combination of last names.”

How incredible is that?! I love the flexibility that California law allows for both parties when it comes to changing names with the marriage license. (Also, I know I haven’t posted about my and Mr. FW’s thoughts when it comes to name changes, but I will later if it interests anyone.)

A few minutes later and our form was all processed and ready to go. We were given the information about what our “officiant” (aka deputized sister of the groom) needs to fill out, which we promptly forgot and will have to research again later.

And that was it. So quick and so simple, this legal process to get married. Mr. FW commented on our way out that, for how easy it was to get a marriage license, it somehow makes it even more sad and ridiculous that not everyone can get married—in this state or so many other places. And I certainly agree. *sigh* Maybe one day…

As for us, our license is good until January of 2012 so let’s just hope we can pull off a wedding sometime between now and then!

Was anyone else amazed by how easy the marriage license process was? (I think I remember my mother telling stories that, back in the day, they required blood work in order to secure a marriage license. Sheesh! So, so glad we’ve moved on from that.) :)

How exciting! Have so much fun in your last couple weeks. It was a pretty nice day to be licensed to be wed. I’ve always loved the city hall building, I work just down the street and take my breaks on the front lawn - I love seeing brides come and go! Congrats you two!

Congrats!!!! So exciting!! I am curious about your thoughts on name changes. I am engaged to another woman and we talk about it sometimes, and haven’t decided what to do. I always love reading your blog and would love to see one on the subject :)

I remember going for our license, too. Hands down the easiest wedding task to cross off. All your pictures are wonderful. So jealous, I remembered to take a few quick happy snaps to commemorate the occasion. Yours are real mementos :)

Our process was easy as well, which does make it kinda sad for others who are not allowed to legally wed. Our building is nowhere near as nice as yours though!

I can’t believe how flexible California for name changing, that’s amazing. And, you’re getting so close now, yay!

I’m glad you explained the whole name change on the marriage license thing for California. Here, we didn’t indicate the change on our license paperwork (you just change it with Social Security if you want to do it). I remember someone (maybe Seal?) mentioned needing to know what to do about her name before getting her license and I was confused. Also, I would be interested in hearing the decision y’all made about your names.

Oh, yay! Your city hall is really beautiful. Our process was similarly simple. We went on lunch one day during the week. Aside from going to the wrong building (we went to the huge county clerk of courts whatever building when we should have gone to the smaller but correct COURT. HOUSE. Because we’re totally smart and pay attention), there was no line and it took about as long as it took for their ancient computers to process the info and spit out a piece of really boring paper. There was a huge line for passports, none for marriage licenses. But it was very exciting!

I wish I had thought to take photos during the whole process…
What a great idea!

I was amazed when I got our license.
1. Applied online
2. Picked up at clerk’s office
3. Didn’t even ask for our ID just last name
DONE!

Holy COW!

@Sunnythebunny: Do it! It’s so exciting!

@Miss Dalmatian: If any of the other commenters are to be believed, then no - I don’t think so. Too bad…

@jthall12: Just had to make an appointment online and show up with our driver’s licenses. That was it. Scarily easy!

@Mrs. Glasses: Perhaps we just missed you, lady! But we’ll see you soon - yay!

@Cupcake2012: I’ll plan to write about it, then. Thanks for letting me know you’re interested!

@Mrs. Teacup: It really was the easiest task to cross off. Who would’ve thought!

@Mrs. Prairie Dog: Will do!

@Mrs. Pony: Yeah, it still amazes me. And to think I never would’ve known unless we went to get a license. Go figure.

@78h2o: Oooh, temporary trailer = not so elegant. But I guess what counts is that you go the license, right? :-)

@Mrs. Cannon: Yeah, I didn’t know that someone would’ve need to have decided that before getting the license. And I’ll definitely plan to post about the name change, since it seems some people are interested.

@Me: Oh, I’m so excited for you!! Every time I see pictures of weddings at SF City Hall, I always think how amazing and romantic that would’ve been. I just know yours will be incredible!

@Miss Ladyfingers: I agree - relatively boring, non-eventful occasion that’s more theoretically exciting than anything else. :-)

@Miss Doe: I’ll plan to write about it, then, just as soon as I can. Thanks for being interested. ;-)

@kitlaai: Do it!! And, congratulations. :-)

@lilyellowdress9: Oh my! Didn’t even ask for ID? That’s crazy. Ours was similarly short, but there was that pesky little ID verification for us. :-)
