Sink or Swim

October 25th, 2011 @ 11:59 am by Miss Warbler

I’ve been putting off this post for a while because this subject is embarrassing for me. I can’t swim. Now when I say I can’t swim, I don’t mean that I can’t swim well. I mean I cannot swim at all. A lot of people get confused on this point. Let me make myself clear. I can’t doggy paddle. I can’t even float. People give me a weird look when I tell them that. But it’s true.

Most people learn to swim when they’re young. I’ve stories from people who brag that they were thrown into a pool by a relative when they were a kid and swimming just came naturally. Well, I was thrown into a pool when I was a kid, too. My uncle threw me into the deep end when I was eight years old. I did not instinctively learn to swim. I thrashed for a bit, took in some water and sank to the bottom of the pool. The only instinct I had was to crawl across the pool floor until I reached a level where I could stand up. I was probably underwater for less than a minute, but it felt like an eternity. After that day, I was absolutely terrified of the water. I didn’t get back into a pool for nearly ten years and by that point I was afraid to do anything other than just stand in 5 feet of water. Many people have tried to teach me, but I just tense up.

For a long time I didn’t regret not learning how to swim. Neither my mother or my sisters learned how to swim. We never had a pool growing up. Trips to the beach were just to play around on the sand and play chicken with the waves. A couple of years ago, we went to the Bahamas and other than walking in up to my waist in the water, I spent the rest of the trip lounging around and sightseeing. Now that we’re going to Hawaii in about six months, however, I’m starting to regret not learning how to swim. Sure, I don’t need to learn. I can wade in up to my waist and wear a life vest when we go snorkeling. But, out of nowhere, I want to learn now. I want to be able to swim with my husband on our honeymoon. I’m really freaking scared, but I figure Hawaii is probably the best motivation I’ll ever get. So, for the next few months in addition to planning a wedding, I will be learning how to swim. Here goes nothing!

Does anyone else have any phobias? Aquatic or otherwise?

Wow, way to go! Mr. Mole is not the strongest of swimmers either, but I think that he is also gearing up to sign up for some classes.

I personally am scared of heights: not when I am in an enclosed, high space necessarily, but when I am in places where I could potentially fall from 10 or more feet. I also have a phobia of cotton balls. Just thinking about them makes my teeth hurt. (Weird, huh?)

Miss Warbler,

I am super proud of you for wanting to overcome your fears. When you are swimming in Hawaii with your new hubbie you will feel amazing. Stick to it!!

My fear is crippling sometimes; fear of failure :-(

Good for you, Miss Warbler! When I was growing up, a friend’s mother didn’t know how to swim at all–and this family owned a boat. The mother secretly took swimming lessons and one time when they were all out boating she flung off her life vest and jumped in –to the shock and surprise of her whole family! My advice is to take your time and don’t rush it–you and water have had a traumatic relationship!

That’s totally common! My FH is from a landlocked state, so he’s not a very strong swimmer. It’s hard if you don’t have a pool or a lake- the ocean is a tough place to learn.

I would recommend taking a lesson at your local Y or something before Hawaii. You will totally be fine in a life vest while snorkeling, but when I went, I was really surprised at the strength of the current. We spent a lot of our swimming time around kids and families in safer areas since we’re not strong swimmers, but it was still fun!

Proud of you for wanting to learn- I say go for it!

@Miss Warbler, Good for you! I taught swim lessons for years and you would be surprised how many adults sign up for private lessons because they never learned how to swim! It’s actually pretty common.

My advice would be to get a good pair of goggles that don’t leak. Being able to see/open your eyes under water makes a lot of people more comfortable with putting their head under (which leads to being more comfortable in the water in general). If you ever have any questions about swimming feel free to ask! I miss teaching so much!

@Miss Mole, My MOH’s mom (and brother)HATES cotton balls. Just like you they get the willies even thinking about them!

Good for you! I used to teach a “terrified adult” swimming class when I was in college, and I will say that I am totally confident you can do it. I highly recommend finding an instructor who has the Red Cross’s Water Safeti Instructor certification. AND, you can learn to float: everyon can, it’s just a matter of finding the right position. I have taught college wrestlers who are all muscle, and skinny grandmas with no fat how to float.

My mom always said she wanted her kids to know how to swim, know how to ride a bike and not be afraid of dogs. Such weird things for a parent to desire of their children!

Good luck learning how to swim. It’s so freeing and relaxing so you’ll be so happy once you’ve got it down and feel safe. I swim maybe once every other year now and it can be a bit scary at first (in an ocean or lake) but once you’re in there it’s just a good time.

It’s just crazy to me that some people don’t know how to swim - but that’s just because I grew up in Florida, on an island, surrounded by water (both ocean and pools). I think it’s totally awesome that you are going to learn despite your fear!

My fear is heights, as well as large dogs I don’t know (never been bitten but I’ve been chased by a bunch). Guess I should get over those :)

@Miss Mole: I don’t know what it is about them, but they creep me out too. I think it’s the texture. Ugh.
@Bells77: I think fear of failure is the ULTIMATE phobia. Even the most confident people have it. Don’t let it get to you!
@bridesmomma: Haha good for her! Although Mr. Warbs would probably have a heart attack if I surprised him like that! I’ll definitely be taking this swimming thing one step at a time.
@mrsdooks: I did hear that the currents were a lot stronger. Thanks for the advice about the Y!
@Miss Aardvark: I agree, I’m probably most freaked out about putting my head under the water. I can’t even stand water in my eyes in the shower. I’m definitely going to invest in a pair of goggles!

Good for you, Miss Warbler! I’m sure it will help you have a much more comfortable time in Hawaii. I have a fear of falling down slopes (will have a hard time skiing), and a very, very strange phobia of balloons, the normal party kind.

Good luck! I am not the best swimmer either. I required the assistance of a lifeguard not once, but twice during my childhood. I also get weird looks when this comes up. I have had some more practice and can tread water for short periods of time, but I am definitely more confident when I can stand up with my head above water. Hawaii sounds like it is the perfect motivation, and you will feel so proud when you can do it!

Oh my goodness, good luck! It is definitely something you should overcome! As an Australian it is compulsory in schools to do swimming and even life-saving classes (well, it was when I was at school) but we also send our babies to swimming lessons at 6 months old :-)

Wow, that’s a dramatic story of crawling to the shallow end - I’d be terrified of water, too! I’m proud of you for facing your fear and wanting to learn, it’s never too late. Yay for you, can’t wait to hear how it goes :)

Good luck, Miss W! I distinctly remember my swimming lessons as a kid.. if you have anyone close to the teacher I had, you should be good to go. I admire you so much for facing your fear - not many people can say the same.

I’m not the best swimmer, but I can get by. I was terrified of snorkeling, but when we were in Hawaii on our honeymoon, we rented a little boogie board for me, and it helped keep me calm, and worked really well. Might help if you could float around on one of those.

Also, look for beaches that are protected in some way from the ocean- that made it a lot more relaxing than the beaches where waves were coming in non-stop from the ocean!

Good luck to you! Kudos for trying to get over your fear, and shame on anyone who thinks tossing a child in a pool is how you teach them to swim!
