About Miss Aardvark

I do deeply apologize for the Spongebob reference in the title. I don’t even like that show. Truth be told I should have come up with a prettier title for this post, because it is about something that I think is really…well…beautiful.

Wedding fragrance.

A few years ago I was at a Mary Kay party with a friend who was engaged. The consultant gave her a tidbit of advice so amazing I knew I needed to tuck it away for future use. She said that sent is the sense most strongly tied to memory and emotion. As such, the bride should wear a fragrance on her wedding day that she has never worn before and then, forever after it will become her “wedding fragrance” and every time she (or more importantly the groom) gets a whiff of it they will be magically transported back to that beautiful day.

It did not take me long to realize this was, of course, totally true! For me, the smell of solvent, and rubber takes me back to my childhood in my dad’s bicycle shop, the smell of garlic bread and old books is my grandma’s house, and Victoria’s Secret Love Spell is totally the girls’ high school locker room.

I knew I wanted to find something that was different from my daily fragrance, which is Amazing Grace by Philosophy.

This is a very soft, light, clean fragrance with just a bit of floral. It is perfect for me for everyday because people often think is smells like soap.

On my wedding day however, I wanted something…more. Something stronger and more sexy that is not overpowering or slutty. (Can a smell be slutty?) Something that was bold but feminine and a distinct break from my everyday. I thought this would be a daunting task, but it was surprisingly easy. I got a bunch of perfume samples in the mail one day and one of them stopped me in my tracks. According to the packaging,

“the fragrance opens with energetic citrusy accords and dries down to a daring yet wearable cloud of complexity that smells of fruit, woods, granite, and salt.”

was really everything I had been looking for. Hive, my wedding fragrance would be, Womanity.

I may have also been influenced by their awesome bottle!

A few weekends ago when I went down the Chicago, I picked some up at one of my all time favorite I-could-spend-way-too-much-money-here stores, Sephora. Sadly, my logical brain won out and I did not get the huge bottle pictured above, but a more reasonable sized (I mean, I will only be wearing it for special occasions) and less badass one below.

I have to keep telling myself that it was not worth doubling the price to get the cooler bottle…the contents are the same. And I am SO happy with them!

Do you have a wedding fragrance? What is it and how did you pick it?

SOooo funny, I’m you in reverse! I tend to wear strong, bold scents normally, but my fiance loves the smell of baby powder, so Amazing Grace will be the soft, perfect scent I’m wearing on my wedding day. I bought the boxed set so I can layer with body wash and lotion, too!

@poelette13, I have the box set too! i LOVE to lotion… I don’t know if all the sets are the same but mine came with a solid perfum (looks like big chapstick, but it’s NOT (lesson learned)) that I really like.

I have to say you have great taste in fragrance! :)

I love your choice… and the bottle is sooo pretty!

I actually wore something I had worn before but stop when it ran out. It was Burberry Brit - the thing is that my husband loves it and it reminds him of when we first started going out XD

What an interesting idea! My dad and FI hate traditional perfume. It gives my dad a headache, and it makes my FI sneeze.
I’ve started wearing organic lavender perfume for everyday, and so far no one is allergic.

But perhaps a trip back to Etsy for perfume wouldn’t be so bad… :)

My wedding fragrance is Lolita Lempika. I am obsessed with that perfume and ran out of it a long time ago. I decided to wear something other than my usual Bath and Body Works “Winter Candy Apple” and I decided to go with my tried and true Lolita. I am so excited to wear it on my wedding day! It’s sitting in my bathroom BEGGING to be opened.

Love the idea - I shall also have to stash it away in my idea folder. And yes a smell can be slutty: Mean girls quote - “you smell like a baby prostitute” lol

I LOL’d at the VS Love Spell…the hall of my HS were drowning in this and Sweet Pea from Bath and Body.

I love what the Mary Kay lady said - so sweet. I have about 2-3 fragrances that I go between depending on the mood (everyday, a little more rebellious, and more dressy and formal), but I plan to find a totally new one to be my “wedding fragrance”. I can also totally relate and will probably be swayed by what the bottle looks like!

Totally worth it ;) I love Amazing Grace, and really considered it for my wedding day fragrance, but it didn’t smell awesome on me. I don’t wear a regular fragrance, but I chose Marc Jacobs Woman for the wedding day - it smells like clean, and water, and a little bit of musk! I just might cart it around on the honeymoon, too, for a two-fer sensory experience.

Also, Love’s Baby Soft makes me think of middle school, Jean Nate bath gel of my bedroom growing up, and I totally sprayed some static guard the other day - which I haven’t done in years - and it took my back to my parents’ bedroom in elementary school and my mom spraying me up for my pantyhose-wearing school plays!

@PeacocksAndCandy, I hear you! I had to put mine is a shoe box in the back of my closet so I wouldn’t try to use it!

I loved this idea, but was never really committed to it until I was feeling stressed and self indulgent a few days before the wedding and went and found a scent I liked. Your bottle is still really pretty!

I am totally buying a wedding fragrance. I’m leaning toward a DKNY scent but need to go shopping soon and try some on. Love your choices!

Still trying to figure out what perfume to wear at our wedding. Yours sounds lovely! Also, I totally get being swayed by bottle designs. I’d collect perfume bottles if the product wasn’t so expensive!

I wore the same perfume I wear every day. He loved that there was something familiar even though I was all dolled up!

The Mary Kay lady was right. That’s exactly what I did for my wedding. I wanted something different for my wedding day and wore Bvlgari Omnia Crystalline. Every time I wear it, it reminds me of my wedding day. I try to wear it sparingly so I don’t get sick of the scent.

I agonised over my choice for MONTHS! I went with Daisy by Marc Jacobs and got a free tote bag - score!

I love the idea of a wedding scent! And is it weird that I totally want the one you got.. just because of the bottle?! ;)

I thought about it and just happened upon one a week before the wedding, Bella by Benefit cosmetics :) Hot Tea hates fragrance, but he liked the way I smelled in this = score!

I totes think smells can be slutty. And I like the idea of having a unique wedding scent. Perhaps I shall visit the local Ulta (since we have no Sephora).

Ohhhh, pretty! This was one thing I didn’t have to worry about for the wedding because I have a wicked perfume allergy.
