Miss Porcupine's Picture
Miss Porcupine, NYC/Lancaster, PA Age and Occupation: 26, Sales Coordinator/Publishing Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Assistant Manager/Sales Engagement Date: August 8, 2010 Wedding Date: March 2012 Venue: Riverdale Manor About Me: I'm a born and bred New Yorker with a love/hate relationship for the city I have always called home. Although I may seem quiet from afar, I have a loud personality once you get to know me. I am a book nerd at heart, but love a night out in the city with good friends. I have a serious addiction to all things cheese, chocolate, cardigans, Mexican food, and reality TV. The future hubs and I met in college, settled in New York, and decided to go with a rustic/peacock infused wedding in Lancaster, PA, right near his hometown. Come the big day, we will be together 5 years, and we're looking forward to making it official!
About Miss Porcupine

Bridesmaids Galore

October 28th, 2011 @ 12:29 pm by Miss Porcupine

I have a scandalous amount of bridesmaids. Eight. I’ve noticed that in Weddingbee world this is often considered a humungo number. Some people think it’s downright ridiculous. Honestly, most New York weddings have big wedding parties. Even though I’m not doing the New York thang for our wedding, I guess I can’t shake that part of my “wedding culture.” It might sound like an excessive amount of girls, but they are all my bridesmaids for good reason.

My sister is my maid of honor, then I have my two best friends from home, my four best college friends, and my sorority little sister who is a major reason why Mr. P and I are even together. We may not get to see each other as much as we used to, we may not get to speak to each other as much as we want to, but I know these girls would be there for me no matter what. They have been there supporting Mr. P’s and my relationship since day one, so it only makes sense that they stand beside us on our big day.

Has it been difficult coordinating schedules and getting everyone in one place? Yes.

There are always ways around things though, and we’ve made it work. Our only group shot may be on the day of the wedding, but that’s okay. Life is busy and messy like that.

When it came time to ask these ladies to be my bridesmaids I decided I wanted to be a big cheeseball. I called it a brunch day (obviously they all knew why we were eating brunch) and whipped up a frittata, muffins, fruit salad, bought some bagels, and poured mimosas.

My first time making muffins - I was overly proud of myself

Some of the spread

Each girl got a little picture frame with a shot of us from sometime through the years, and a card I printed up on card stock. Since, yes, it’s hard to get everyone in the same place at one time, half of my bridesmaids couldn’t make it that day. And, because I fail at life, I still have four presents for my remaining bridesmaids in a box at my desk. (So, hit me up ladies.) Whoops! I need to re-attach my head to my body sometimes. I have no good excuse.

I can’t believe how long ago this was now that I am looking back at these pictures (at our first place)! It seems like an eternity ago, and in just a few months the big day will be here. Wacky.

Did you go the route of having a lot of bridesmaids? How do you tackle the logistics of handling a big bridal party?

I totally understand! I’m an NYC girl and have 8, too, and am in the process of trying to explain to my mother why I can’t have three MOHs. It all just feels so un-New York!

PLEASE stop saying that it’s a New York Thang. Cuz it is not. Not every New Yorker has (or expects) a huge wedding. New York is a city of millions, in YOUR social circle that may be the expectation but that is not the case for every New Yorker. One a side note, those cupcakes look real yummy.

I heard some critism too when I chose my NINE bridesmaids. But why would one want a wedding with someone else’s opinions. If someone finds that number redic then they can simply chose a lower number for their own wedding. I love all of my 9 bridesmaids and wouldn’t change a thing! :)

YUM. I’ve only ever been a bridesmaid ONCE (to a cousin) and she asked me really quickly via text message, since it was a spontaneous wedding. Love the effort that went in!

Thanks you guys for the kind words!

@Anonymous: I never meant to over generalize. I definitely know that not ALL NY weddings are huge events. For instance my own would not have been if I decided to get married in NY & I never expected a big one either. My social circle has pretty moderate weddings- nothing crazy, actually. However there still exists a certain wedding culture in the tri-state area that is certainly not as common in other parts of the U.S. Of course it’s not ALWAYS the case. I recognize that. I’m just blogging here about my own NY/wedding experience. I can’t represent every single New Yorker’s experience.

I have 7 Bridesmaids and FI has 8 Groomsmen. plus we have a dear friend who is going to be the officiant so he hes kinda like another groomsmen. so its quite a large bridal party. But I wouldn’t Have it any other way!

Right now I have 5 BM’s… may add a Jr. BM to the mix. Not quite as big as 8… but one lives in Virginia and another in California (I’m in Michigan)… so logistics might be tough for us too! You have the right attitude of “lives are busy, it’s okay, we’ll get together when we can and we’ll all be together on the big day”! Plus — 8 just means you have some rockin girls in your life, who cares what anyone says!

That’s a really cute idea. I am looking for a way to ask my bridesmaids (but they all know that they are going to be, anyway). I simply can’t resist the opportunity for a DIY paper project. Your idea is really cute with the picture of you and each girl. I might have to steal a version of this from you. Hope that’s ok!
