About Mrs. Raccoon

Our Warmest Thanks

October 28th, 2011 @ 6:49 am by Mrs. Raccoon

“Who told you that you had to give out wedding favors? Etiquette has never thought of weddings as comparable to children’s birthday parties, where the guests might need consolation for not being the center of attention. You owe them only the hospitality of the occasion.” - Apparently, The Miss Manners

Yeah, but but but…true story time.

Once upon a time, I was a very bad wedding guest. It was entirely on accident, I cringe remembering, and I swear up one side and down the other I’m not a total snot. Mr. Raccoon and I were enjoying the wedding of our friends, and all of the sudden things were winding down because it was time to leave. I thought, Hmmm, odd, no favor. My eyes scanned the room—no one else was leaving toting bubbles, little tulle bags stuffed with almonds, or any other goodies. No favor? Rational thinking set in that those thoughts were seriously stupid. Had they not just provided me with a way to see old friends, dance, drink, have nice dinner and dessert, and most importantly share their special day with them? They didn’t have to invite me. My rump was taking up valuable seat space.

On the other side of things now, guests are going to be traveling long distances to make it to our wedding, most likely they will need to get a hotel, maybe they are bringing a present, maybe they had to request time off of work, they have probably invested serious amounts of time, friendship, and love into one or both of us, etc. The list goes on. I don’t want anyone to be leaving and think, “No favors?” I want them to know how truly thankful I am they went well out of their way to spend their weekend with us.

So what are we doing? Giving everyone our warmest thanks.

I had two specifications going into choosing favors that really narrowed down the field.

Our favors had to be 1.) disposable and 2.) affordable.

- $30 Cost Breakdown -

  • 4 boxes of 60-pack Swiss Miss hot chocolate with marshmallows from Costco = ~$24
  • 4 small rolls of wrapping paper from Party City = ~$4
  • Curling ribbon and clear tape from the Dollar Tree = ~$2

Here, you can see the start of a few!

I still plan on printing “Our Warmest Thanks” on card stock, using a paper punch to cut the sayings out in a design, and then attaching the cutouts to the center over the curling ribbon. Now, please, tell me what I was thinking trying to wrap 150 small and oddly shaped packages!

Is anyone else assembling their favors?

I want to do something similar, except with a tea appropriate for Spring. I am not sure what the saying on the tag should be, though. “Warmest thanks” is so cute!

PS. Thanks for the pictures, good inspiration!

We are doing a very simple, cost effective candy buffet as our favors. Cost should be about $1 a person (I’m shopping the after holiday sales!)
Love your hot cocoa idea! :)

I’m thinking of canning strawberry jam for favors.
IDK If I want the usual “spread the love” quote on the labels? I can’t really think of anything else that’s catchy and cute tho :/

What a cute idea! Wrapping them looks like a pain, but it will be worth it!

@luvmyDwight: found this one on a favor website…”Today our lives are jammed full of love.” or the old standby, “Love is sweet”

This is adorable! I am a big fan of any favor that involves a thank you pun!
We went to a wedding recently that had to-go mugs as favors and there was hot chocolate you could fill them with on your way out. Not nearly as affordable, but I think people liked the hot chocolate, so I am sure yours will be a hit! I know we would love it - Mr. D and I may or may not buy the Costco box of Swiss Miss just for the 2 of us… :)

@soyjoy222: No problem! Tea is a great idea!

@futuremrswifey: Swooping in after the holidays for sales is a good way to get things! I think it’s fun so I go even when I don’t really need anything. Oops.

@luvmyDwight: Jam would be yummy and cute! If you don’t want to use the spread the love saying, maybe you could do something with the word sweet?

@futuremrswifey: I really like the saying you suggested!

@Lauren A: Go for it! I have to try really hard to resist drinking the ones that are haven’t gotten wrapped yet :)
Having a warm to go mug would be a fun way to end the night

Our guests were largely from out of town and it was very important to us that we thank them with a suitable gift. My husband and I spent about $3 a person, hand-rolling beeswax candles and wrapping them in cute little bamboo mats and velvet ribbon with personalize thank-you matchbooks. We also provided gold jordan almonds and honey sticks on the table. So, the overall cost may have been closer to $3.50 or $4. It took us forever to make them, but we hope that our guests felt truly appreciated and loved.

You just gave me a fantastic idea. I think I am going to do this with lemonade for our yellow, summertime wedding. I hope you don’t mind me completely ripping off your idea… Thank you so much!!
