Short Hairdo Don’ts?

October 30th, 2011 @ 11:05 am by Mrs. Mole

When I was growing up, I always assumed that brides had long hair. In any wedding-related fantasies, however abstract, I pictured Barbie’s hair—and not the Barbie my sister scalped; that Barbie was forever after regulated to date the “bad” Ken who was missing a leg and had a loose, wobbly head. I’m talking more about this type of Barbie.

No joke, I think I have a picture from elementary school where I am rocking the same hairstyle: long, crimped hair, and back-brushed bangs. I thought I looked pretty darn good. This is the same school picture, of course, where I am also wearing a painted denim blouse and pink rubber bands around my braces. Late ’80s, what?

Anyway, I had long hair for all of the ’80s and ’90s and well into the ’00s. When I met Mr. Mole in the beginning of 2009, I still had long hair. It wasn’t the longest that it had ever been, but it was considerably past my shoulders. I could twist it into updos; I could curl it into big, bouncy waves; I could pull it into high ponytails. People loved my hair. My mother especially loved my hair.

The problem was that I was growing tired of it. So one day, on a whim, I chopped it. I told my hairdresser that I didn’t want even the possibility of making a ponytail. When she spun me around in the chair and showed me my new hair, I gasped. It was…perfect. I have kept it short ever since, about two and a half years in total. It’s easier when I get ready in the mornings, when I run, and when I eat gigantic marshmallow s’mores.

Mr. Mole flatters me with his photography.

When I first started planning my wedding, I was definitely feeling some pressure to grow my hair long again. People, including my hairdresser, assumed that I was going to stop cutting it every six to eight weeks (well, OK, you got me—every twelve to sixteen weeks). It didn’t help that a lot of the photos that I found online for “bridal hair” showed cascades of long curls or complicated, architectural updos. None of which could I do.

So what’s a short-haired girl to do? Are any of you short-haired girls going to grow your hair long (or medium) for the big day?

My hairdresser wanted me to grow out my hair but it just wasn’t me. I kept it short-ish and wore my hair down and curly (natural)
I’m so happy with the decision I made!

Me too:)) I think I even had the same shirt as Barbie. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I so happy to see a post about NOT GROWING YOUR HAIR. I get so sick of people thinking that brides only have long hair. I think brides should rock the hair length that looks best on them not what everybody assumes brides should have. (i.e. long and flowing or long and in an updo)

@KLloyd1: Sounds lovely! I am definitely keeping my hair short too; I just need to figure out a style.
@Wedding Card Box: Haha. It’s funny how I thought Barbie was SOOO fashionable when I was younger.

@Anonymous: I agree! I can’t imagine myself with long hair any longer. It’s just not who I am. I figure that my look on my wedding day should thus reflect that!

As a long-haired girl, I’ve definitely wondered why people grow their hair out for their wedding. I would definitely not cut my hair for any reason, but may be because I’m crazy, just-trim-it, omg-one-inch-only lady. What can I say? My round face doesn’t roll with shorter hair.

More importantly, I had that Barbie as a child. But I got too much Dep gel in her crimpy hair and cut it to pixie-length. My dad then called her “Ellen Barbie” and I did not get it. We both thought she looked better.

I had THAT Barbie! OMG haha. I totally agree with you - I had the opposite. I have had long hair for just about all of my life, with the exception of when I donated it a couple of times, and then always grew it right back out. Then, in the months before my wedding and my hair was long, as it almost always is, everyone was like, “Oh, you’re growing it for the wedding?” And I was like, “um, no, I’m growing it because I like to have long hair…”. I think you are going to be a beautiful bride!

I think short hair is SUPER cute on brides. Cant wait to see what style you go with!

This is too funny, right before I logged in here I was browsing through wedding photos online and I am in bertween what I want for my hair too, I’ve always had very long hair to the middle of my back and earlier this year I cut it into a cute bob that everyone loved but I have been growing it out and it is now to my shoulders, I either want it really long or short, not in between! BTW I love your hair, it looks great on you!

I am having a similar dilemma! After chopping off my super long hair 6 months ago to above my shoulders, I am wondering about how I should do my hair for the big day. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of resources for cute short hair styles.

We had a barbie whose head got shaved (via scissors) too! I believe it came as a result of not having enough Ken dolls, because obviously if you cut off her hair she totally resembles a man…not.
Anyway, I think your hair looks great short! And I think it is most important to look and feel like yourself on the big day - short or long haired :)

A friend of mine had short hair when we graduated high school and the stylist did an amazing job on her hair. Looked like an updo!

I’m completely undecided about it. I was very short haired for several years, and then BEFORE getting engaged, started growing it out just as an experiment. Though I’m enjoying it long (and “long” for me right now is not quite shoulder length), but I would feel a little weird if I had more hair for the wedding than I’ve had for many years or plan to have in the future!

I never understood short-haired girls who grew their hair out for a wedding (or any occasion). I mean, I understand growing it an inch or so longer than usual, just so you can get the perfect cut to the perfect length the week before or something, but not going from above-the-shoulder to below-the-shoulder just for an event- it seems like it would be a huge pain in the butt.

I’m a long hair girl- I chopped it all (a la Sinead O’Connor) in high school, and promptly grew it all back in and then some, and haven’t contemplated chopping it since. I’m growing it out same as I always am- I like my hair to hit about at my bra band, and I’m working on getting it there healthy. If it needs to be trimmed for the wedding style, so be it, but I wouldn’t chop it to shoulder length just to accommodate one day. Seems to me like a short hair girl growing it out would be the same type of thing.

My hair has always been long, so it was a no brainer that I would leave it that way for our wedding. But, now that I’m looking for a pwc, I’m thinking about using your ‘do as my inspiration! I mean that to be flattering, and not creepy. :)

I just did the same with my hair because it was way too long, it just hung there and was too much to deal with. Now it’s a little above my collar bone. I prefer it medium length, though.

So glad to see this post! I started growing my hair out right after my engagement and had it past my shoulders (longest length since Kindergarten!) when…the stir crazy set in…about 2 months ago I went to my hairdresser and had her chop about 8″ off, put in lots of layers, texture, etc….no more ponytail for me!!
Still trying to find out what to do with my hair! :)

Unfortunately or fortunately my hairdresser was also my bridesmaid and I was forced into growing my hair when she refused to cut it…

@Mrs. Prairie Dog: I also had a Barbie whose hair looked much better after my sister chopped her hair off. She then had a really cute bob. The other Barbies were less fortunate.
@Mrs. Hermit Crab: It’s such a funny assumption: once you get engaged, you start growing your hair. And thanks!
@Miss Aardvark: That’s a great way to look at things. A variety of options are always nice to have.
@Aud1628: Thanks! I hope to style it for the wedding a bit more than I did for the s’mores picture. I am just trying to find short hair inspiration that isn’t too 80s, too casual, or too prom-like.
@SteidaBega: I definitely agree! It took me a long time to find some photos that I liked enough to bookmark. I’ll be sharing them soon!
@Miss Dalmatian: Thanks so much! I definitely agree with you; you should look like yourself on your wedding day (maybe just a bit fancier, though)!
@gmcurtis: Oh interesting! I always admire people who can do such neat things with hair.
@TankGirl: Interesting point! I know that I won’t ever go back to having long hair, but I can’t decide if I eventually want to go shoulder-length. Of course, as I am writing this, I am also mentally reminding myself that I am long overdue for a serious haircut.
@pinkfrog: I think you hit the nail on the head! And I really admire your willingness to go through such a big beauty change from very long to very short!
@Mrs. Pony: Haha, thanks. Hopefully you won’t use the picture in this post as your inspiration; every once in awhile, I do brush it. Just not in Northern WI. :)
