Hair’s the Thing…

October 31st, 2011 @ 11:37 am by Miss Fox

The more Foxy and I think about our respective wedding-day looks, the more little details we start thinking about. We’re not just thinking about the dress, the shoes, the suit, the flowers…we’re also thinking about the hair. More specifically, the length of his and the color of mine.

The shorter story of the two is in regard to Foxy’s beard. Currently? He looks like a (super cute) mountain man.

Hair's the Thing... : wedding beauty hair havre de grace Img 01902 IMG_01902

He never just trims—it’s either a full beard or completely clean shaven, with a week or two of, in my opinion, decent scruff.

Hair's the Thing... : wedding beauty hair havre de grace Nale 18 nale-18

The question for him is at what point does he shave before the wedding? We’re thinking of doing a test run…he’ll shave the whole beard off, and I’ll take pictures every other day or so to see what “look” we like best. Time intensive? Yes. Worth it? Hells to the yes!

As for me…well, first things first: I am very much a natural redhead.

Correction: a natural flaming redhead.

Exhibit A (as if you couldn’t see it above):

Hair's the Thing... : wedding beauty hair havre de grace Flaming flaming

See? Flames.

I used to loathe my hair when I was younger but always got death threats from friends (coughandmymomcough) if I even considered dying it a different color, like brown. Yes, I actually wanted brown hair.

So I went through a phase in high school where I dyed just the underside of it a bright, Manic Panic blue. Foxy Mama was none too thrilled, but hey—you could really only see it when I put my hair up in a ponytail. Then about two years ago, I decided to go all punk rock and dye the underside black. Foxy was going through a black-hair phase and there was extra dye left, so…yeah. That happened for a while. Again, really only visible when the hair was up, but it would also occasionally peek through the top layers of my hair when it was down.

Exhibit B:

Hair's the Thing... : wedding beauty hair havre de grace Blackh black+h

While I’ve eventually grown to love having red hair, I’m still not a huge fan of the shade of red I was born with. Just much too bright. Again…too flaming.

So about nine months ago, I grew a pair of lady balls and decided—to hell with it—I’m dying these virginal hairs of mine! I didn’t trust myself to do it out of a box (because, honestly, nine times out of ten, you really can’t get a natural-looking shade of red from a box) and made an appointment with my stylist for a cut and lowlights. Starting out small and all that.

Well, the stylist somehow convinced me to just go with an all-over semi-permanent color—I forget the reasons, exactly, but it was cheaper and I trusted her, so all-over color it was! But…you have no idea how nervous I was. After she applied the color and let it sit in my hair for a while, the dye started to look like this bright, maraschino-cherry red. I honestly almost started crying and kept whining to myself that Mom was riiiiight waaaah.

It was kind of too late to turn back, so I took a deep breath and told myself not to freak until the dye was washed out and my hair was dry. I’m so happy I calmed myself down, because in the end…

Exhibit C:

Hair's the Thing... : wedding beauty hair havre de grace Redhai red+hai

…I loved it! (So did the pussycat.) Deep, dark, auburn-like red. Since the color is actually a semi-permanent gloss, it would slowly fade away in six to eight weeks as opposed to growing out—no roots!

The bummer to this little hair-dye miracle? My ever dwindling wallet wasn’t able to afford getting color every seven-ish weeks. Plus I was kind of nervous that it would end up frying my hair.

What to do but turn to Rite Aid and actually get a box of dye. ::GASP:: This doesn’t really help on the frying the hair thing, but it does indeed help the wallet. I ultimately decided on Herbal Essences Natural Instincts in Medium Auburn Brown (previously Cinnaberry).

Hair's the Thing... : wedding beauty hair havre de grace Photo 201 photo-201

It’s a semi-permanent dye as well, and has apparently been proven to cause less damage to hair. At this point, I didn’t have much to lose—if I didn’t like the color, it would fade away with several shampoos. Lucky for me, I actually really liked the way the box color came out! It’s a little harsh for the first day or so, but after one or two shampoos, it looks great and, more importantly, not fake!

Exhibit D:

Hair's the Thing... : wedding beauty hair havre de grace Dsc 03002 DSC_03002

About two weeks post dye job—my ideal shade of red!

This is where the question of my hair color comes in, in regard to the wedding: if I dye it myself, how far ahead of time do I do so, OR, should I just cough up the dough and get it done professionally? I’m all about saving money, but I’m thinking it’s worth it this time around. Again, I think we’ll have to do the picture litmus test for my hair color as well as Foxy’s beard!

If you’re a fellow dyed-hair bride, did you consider when to do a touch-up before the big day? Or did you have a preference for your man’s hair/facial hair?

my hair is darke blonde with just a handful of super thick highlights at the top. I don’t mind this unnatural look in regular life, but I was worried it would be too stripey for a bride.

but ultimately, I decided to go with my “usual” hair for the wedding, and it didn’t look too stripey at all.

as for the man: I asked him to have a scruff for the wedding. he trims with the smallest guard on his clippers to get this effect.

I love you two. :)

I wouldn’t let Josh have anything less than a full beard on the wedding day. I think we had him trim from “mountain man” to “hottie groom” like 2 days before the wedding so he looked *just* right on W Day.

As for color…I would do it no more than 1 week before the wedding. Ideally maybe 6 days before, then don’t wash it for 1 shower (2 if you can stand it), then wash w/ lukewarm water every day leading up to the wedding (as some one who dyes their hair red I have some experience doing this.) You should be good to go!!

ok, I just have to chime in. one of my favorite aspects of our wedding photos is how RED my hair looks against the greenery of the surroundings. given that you’re having a garden wedding, it will be AMAZEBALLS.

anyhow, I vote go for a pro job. I’d go like 10 days before the wedding, if possible, so it has time to kind of mute itself a bit while still being fresh and hottie mchotterson.

Love your thoroughness!

I am a natural brunette with some auburn undertones, and the red kind of washes me out because I’m so pale. I’ve done at-home color for years, a very dark brown. I will be doing my last coloring this weekend, for next Friday’s wedding! Should allow for a little fading and washing away of any mis-haps around my hairline. I usually don’t do too badly on my own - I smear vaseline around my hairline to prevent dye from staining my skin, which is super-important since I have no bangs! I considered splurging on my first salon dye job for the wedding, but then I decided dye AND paying for my style on the wedding day is just too much on *hair.* So, I’ll leave the curls to the professionals and the dye to me, as it’s always been. :)

As for the future hubby, he likes his hair grown out a bit, so I trimmed him up with our clippers at home last weekend (3 week mark). He has minimal facial hair and will be clean-shaven on the wedding day. So far his regrowth is nice and even.

I am debating this issue too! I used to get my hair professionally highlighted, but I have since switched to a Clairol box. I really like the most recent color that I’ve picked, but I am not sure if I want something a bit “more natural” for the wedding day? I should decide soon, so as to have a test run of a local salon.

@janie-janie: I like that you went for the “usual”.. it’s your everyday color, so why not have it at your wedding?! And re: scruff.. I think Foxy just needs a new trimmer. His is terrible. Ohh.. Christmas gift idea!
@EAQ219: Yeaa Foxy just looks weird and boy like to me when he has no beard. “Hottie groom” he will be, for sure. ;) And duh, why did I not think to ask you this?!
@Mrs. Snow Cone: Natural light and greenery will do that, for sure! Thank you for the advice!
@poelette13: It sounds like you have a terrific plan for both you and the man. I definitely agree.. cut, dye, updo.. lots of money on hair right there. I say if you’re comfortable dying on your own, why not, right?

My hair is currently Exhibit D color as well! I just got it done this past Saturday with wedding coming up this Saturday. Hoping a couple washes will tone down the violet-ness of it.

When my FI had to shave his beard off for a new job a few months ago, I definitely grieved for it a little bit. However he has promised that he will do whatever it takes to make sure his beard is back for our wedding day! I can’t imagine our wedding photos sans beard…. He wouldn’t look like himself without it!
As far as my own hair, I have spent the past two years growing out my permanently-dyed black hair to get back yo my natural dark brown. I will be having my hair dyed professionally before the big day to make sure it looks like my natural color, only better!

We’re totally opposite! I, too, am a natural ginger, but my shade isn’t quite as vibrant as I prefer. So I do the box-dye too. A few months before the wedding, I self-dyed, and then every morning on my way out to my car, I would stop in the backyard and take a self-portrait (from the front, side and back) - it helped to have semi-consistent outdoor lighting. Sure, it took an extra minute or two to snap the photos - but I was so glad I did! Turned out, 5 days was the magic number for me…

if you ever feel super brave and have a Sally Beauty Supply anywhere near you, you can purchase dye and developer yourself, just like the salons use, and its cheaper :) Some colors are just hard to get from a box, and I’ve found my black is easier to maintain that way, and one of my BMs up keeps her {fake} red that way. I agree with Mrs SnowCone though.. if you go the pro route, I’d try to do it at least 10 days out… good luck! :)

Your natural colour is STUNNING. Seriously. I don’t know why you would ever want it a different colour. All the colours you posted look good but your natural, flaming hair is really beautiful.

I’m a big fan of box dye, it’s cheap and easy and if you are doing an all over color, it’s totally fine in my eyes. I would suggest doing it a little ahead of the wedding just so the color settles a little bit…but I’m far from a hair expert, that’s just what I plan on doing :)

@MissMogwai: Two years!! I really hope it’s just what you want by the time the wedding comes! It’s crazy how you can dye it in 10 minutes but have to wait foreverrr to get it back, yes?!
@Mrs. Husky: Good point: must take pictures outside!
@siimplycraziie: I didn’t realize you could get the dye and developer.. I wonder if I could get the same shade my stylist used?? Will look into this!
@weddingbee lurker: Aw, I really appreciate it! My mom totally agrees with you. I just like the way I look with it a bit darker, I think. :)
@sarah: Oh my gosh it took me FOREVER to start to love my red hair! I still debate about going full on brown though. Would be a weird change!

Ohhh, I LOVE your idea of having Mr. Foxy shave his beard and take a picture every day as it grows back! This is the perfect way to figure out what “look” he wants to rock on the wedding day. As for you, if you’ve figured out a system you like on your own, I say stick with the box dye. But, the wedding is a great time to treat yourself, so if you really want to splurge and trust them to do a good job, then I say go for it!

I’ve never dyed my hair, so I can’t help you out, but I LOOOOOOVE your hair colour. Love.
That said, you should look how you want to look for your wedding. :)
