A Wealth of Happiness and Romance

November 1st, 2011 @ 7:30 am by Mrs. Raccoon

I struggled a lot with this one, guys. Flowers, oh how I love them, oh how their price tags do not fit into my nicely divided budget no matter how I play with the percentages. (Thanks, Google Docs!)

After investigating a few florists in the area, I knew this was going to be a do-it-yourself kind of project. I’m going to order white roses in bulk from Costco online. I was able to find 100 stems for $80 including shipping. All the reviews say to have them delivered about two days before the event so you can get them into water and looking beautiful again.

On top of this steal, I might have found the best little-known invention. It’s called Easy Arranger and is sold by Annabelle Noel. For $12 I got a four pack of patterns, insurance I’ll call it, so that the bouquets look right. Want to know what else is awesome about these? They’re bendable, reusable, and coated so they won’t rust!

You just stick your flowers through the holes. It looks foolproof, right?

The roses will be beautiful, but I want a little something extra to go with them. When I was looking for ideas, I found that I really liked the way bouquets that had dried lotus pods and a little extra filler in them looked.

Filler and pods from Joann Fabrics, $5 using a 50% off coupon from their sales flyer

Math is not my strong suit, but BOOM! Three bridesmaids’ bouquets and one toss bouquet for under $100! What? I’m proud.

Is anyone willing to share bulk-flower-ordering advice or reviews?

Did you find a way to work something into your budget that at first seemed impossible?

you are much braver than I! My thumbs are nowhere near green, and I’m sure I would kill any flowers that came near me before the wedding.

Can’t wait to see the final product!!

Nice! I wish I had thought of this before I booked a florist.

Wow thank you for this post! I didn’t know there was something like that arranger out there. I haven’t the slightest idea about arranging flowers but that gives me hope for making it DIY.

I love it! I wanted to do my own bouquets and love live flowers, but just since I was already doing too much DIY stuff, I decided to do them ahead of time by wiring brooches and using some artifical flowers, etc. Florists have huge overheads, so it does really help if you can cut that out and do it yourself–the flowers should be just as fresh too!

@CherieeBee: Your flowers will definitely look beautiful and it will be one less thing to be worried about so close to your wedding.

@Jamiezilla: Good luck! My fingers are crossed! Our wedding is in January so I’ll be sure to let everyone know how they actually worked out.

@MuddyInsignia: Doing a lot of DIY stuff can be really overwhelming. Your project sounds like it will look fabulous though!

That looks awesome, I might have reconsidered DIYing our flowers if I had known of this!

I’m so terrified of doing DIY flowers, but it looks like you know exactly what you’re doing! I love that they have the flower forms to ensure a perfect bouquet! And I swear by Costco flowers.. they always last the longest of any flowers I’ve brought home!

You’re a smarty, Miss Raccoon! When I briefly looked into florists, I saw their prices and immediately said, “Heck no!” I did all of our flowers myself, and they turned out exactly the way I wanted them to. And they were so incredibly affordable!

I was in the same boat you are. I am a total flower person, but could not rationalize the amount of money a florist wanted for a bouquet. I planned to order from Costco as well, but then waited too long to order and used fiftyflowers.com instead. They were a bit more expensive than Costco, but still extremely reasonable. I ordered 100 red roses, 50 black magic roses and 25 white roses and it came to about $250. I ordered more than needed to make sure that I didn’t run out. Like everyone says they come very wilted and thirsty, but after trimming the ends and putting them in water for a few hours, they looked gorgeous! I had them delivered on Thursday for my Saturday wedding and by Friday afternoon they looked perfect. I planned to use the red and black magic roses for the bouts, corsages, 4 bridesmaid bouquets and toss bouquet and the white for my bouquet and groom bout. Unfortunately, the white roses were much smaller than the red roses and 2 dozen wasn’t enough to make a good sized bouquet. I’m not sure why they were so much smaller than the red (online it listed them as the same size), but they also were a little more off-white than I expected. By this point I was past stressing about all of the details and had 4 trusty friends putting together the flowers for me. They added black magic in with the white for my bouquet to give it some extra size. They turned out amazing, though I wouldn’t have been able to do it without help. There is just too much to do at the end regardless of how organized you are. Since I had ordered extras they were even able to make 6 centerpieces for random tables at the reception. Let me know if you would like photos of how they turned out. For me it was definitely the way to go! One last piece of advice, make sure you get plenty of floral wire, tape and thorn strippers! Getting the thorns and leaves off would have been a nightmare without a thorn stripper! Also, have a few 5 gallon buckets cleaned out and ready to go to store the flowers in. We didn’t have enough at first and had to improvise with coolers until we got a couple more buckets.

I did DIY flowers. I ordered from fiftyflowers.com for part of the flowers we used. I ordered some garden roses that they had on sale for $36 and then 100 stems of craspedia (Billy Balls) for $100. I contacted a flower farm near my venue and we went there to pick/clip the rest of the flowers on Friday morning before the big day. They had amazing fall flowers in all sorts of colors and charged me $45. I had left over burlap for wrapping them and used a 50% off coupon for JoAnn’s for floral wire, floral tape, corsage elastics and brown pods. It was much less expensive this way.

From our haul, we got:
1 bride bouquet
3 bridesmaid bouquets
4 wrist corsages (2 moms, 2 grandmothers)
6 boutonnieres
Leftover stems (many) for decorating LOVE mugs and sticking in little vases here and there

Good luck! It’s not only achievable but FUN and a great activity to accomplish with your friends and family. It will take twice as long as you think it will to complete, that’s really my only advice.

I’m amused by the directions on the device. ‘Hand tie’. As opposed to what? Machine tying?!
