Dressing as a Wedding Guest

November 1st, 2011 @ 1:37 pm by Miss Petit Four

One of the best things about this time in our lives is that more than likely, some of our friends are getting married, too. I had the pleasure of going to a friend’s wedding last weekend and had to struggle through the age old question of what to wear.

I love this for a fall or winter wedding:

This is perfect for a spring or garden wedding:

Maybe you have a beach wedding to attend?:

Trying to find an outfit for a black tie affair? Try something like this…

I love this simple black dress that you can add some fun accessories to!

At the last wedding I went to, I was surprised to see three women dressed in all white! I know some brides don’t mind that their guests wear white, but I always thought it was an unspoken rule that we aren’t supposed to wear white as guests.

What’s your take on wearing white to weddings as a guest? Yay or nay?

I know what dresses are very “in” right now, but I still think it is poor taste to wear one to a wedding (unless the bride has requested guests wear black or white (but for heaven’s sake add some black!)) I know there are lots of cute white dresses out there but I would not wear one to a wedding.

I think as long as it isn’t the main overwhelming color it’s totally ok. But don’t try upstage the bride that’s just bad taste.

I agree, I wouldn’t wear white to a wedding. I would, however, where the second one you posted for a garden wedding - so cute!

I love that second dress! The whole wedding-guest-wearing-white thing baffles me. My dad’s fiancee even had the foresight to ask what color our bridesmaids were wearing. Not that I would care if she showed up in gray as well, but it was so refreshing to have somebody care about stuff like that!

I agree with queenforstine07 that it may have some white just not predominately white.

NAY NAY NAY!! I kind of feel strongly on this one - can you tell? ha ha My mom wanted to put formal reception on our invites but I didn’t want to push that issue or force our guests into formal wear. I would hope that with the date of our event, most would ramp up the wardrobe anyway. I guess we’ll see! I’m more concerned about having fun!

I would never wear white to a wedding and I probably wouldn’t care if someone wore white to our wedding, so long as they didn’t do so to upstage the bride.

I’m a resounding “nay!” on the wearing white to a wedding debate. I don’t know why, but that really bothers me.

What do you think about guests wearing the same color as the bridesmaids? I bought a dress to wear to an upcoming wedding but I found out after that the bridesmaids are wearing the same color. My dress is a short sheath. Theirs is long and strapless. The bride said she didn’t care… but I still feel weird about it (but I LOVE my dress!). I would love an opinion…

I say no way to a white dress at a wedding! I always notice it as a guest if someone has worn white. Rude! I love the dresses featured here, though the “Summer wedding” one is a little too short I think… You don’t want to be the guest in the inappropriately short dress. There is always one!

@valerina529: I think if the bride OK’s it, its totally fine. I dont think any of us expect our guests to avoid certain colors just to appease us :D
If it were my wedding, I would be ok with a guest wearing a lilac dress.
