Mrs. Mole's Picture
Mrs. Mole, Los Angeles/Las Vegas Age and Occupation: 29, Test Prep Instructor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, User Experience Architect Engagement Date: April 2011 Wedding Date: January 2012 Venue: Wynn Las Vegas/Bouchon Bistro About Me: I’m a Wisconsinite-turned-Angeleno who is planning a destination wedding in Las Vegas. I am passionate about education: I spent 23 (!) consecutive years in school, and now I work to help other people get into graduate programs. I love running on the treadmill, buying bath products from Lush, learning new moves in step aerobics, and exploring my neighborhood on foot. I am sometimes snobby about food, but I am rarely snobby about books. I read everything from Geoffrey Chaucer to Iris Murdoch to Chuck Klosterman to Candace Bushnell. My fiance and I are getting married on our third anniversary!
About Mrs. Mole

Our apartment is beginning to fill with items for our wedding. Now don’t worry; we aren’t at Hoarders level yet. I am in no danger of getting crushed by a falling stack of programs in the living room or swallowed by a sea of washi tape hidden behind the pantry door. However, there are favor cards in the desk. There are invitation samples on the bookshelf. There is a sparkly hair clip in the medicine cabinet. And there are three new shoe boxes in my closet. That’s right. I have purchased three pairs of shoes for one occasion.

(And I almost bought another pair today. PSA: Nordstrom Rack at the Howard Hughes Center in Los Angeles has two pairs of white satin Jimmy Choo pumps for $49.99. Size 38.5/8.5 and 41/11.)

The shoe hoard

Let’s open these babies up for a closer look.

Left to right: Kate Spade “Ollie,” Boutique 9 “Karyl,” Charles by Charles David “Finch”

It was never my intention to buy more than one pair of shoes for my wedding—especially since I love my original pair so much! They are blush-colored patent peep-toes. They fit our wedding style and my personal style. But I jumped the gun: I bought the Boutique 9 shoes before I bought my wedding dress. It didn’t occur to me back in May that the dress that I would buy in July would be a sample dress cut for someone who was 5’10″ or so. I am a smidge over 5’7″ without shoes. The Boutique 9 heels are 3.25″ tall. Whoops.

The too-high (???) heels

I bought my second pair of shoes at the Charles David store at the Beverly Center. I immediately spotted the huge SALE sign in the window. Shortly thereafter, I saw these light sage green patent flats (the website lists them as taupe, but they are the greenest taupe that I have ever seen). They match our wedding colors. They were 50% off. I scooped them up and practically skipped out of the store. Maybe flats were the answer! It’s not a long walk from the Wynn to the Venetian, but I want to avoid blisters. After all, I want to be a beaming bride, not a grimacing one. Plus I need to remember our home reception in Wisconsin in February: won’t flats be nicer on the snow and ice?

The comfy flats

Fresh off of my flats high (har har!), I stumbled upon my third pair of shoes at Neiman Marcus. As indicated above, I am a sucker for deals. I bought these metallic gold and pearl flats for 70% off. They are going to look great with my dress that I will wear both to the courthouse (marriage license!) and to our rehearsal dinner. They also look great at book club; I clearly wasn’t able to save these in the box! I even wore them to the Los Angeles bee meet-up, which Miss Warbler organized.

The shoes I was unable to save until January

OK, Miss Mole, so what’s the problem? It seems like the Charles David flats are the best fit for the wedding day, right? Well, I discovered at my first alterations appointment that I have lost so much weight that my dress now lays flatter on me—and thus seems longer. So much longer, in fact, that my dress now needs a hem. I need to make a decision on which shoes I wear before I go in for my next appointment.

I’m turning to you guys for help. Help me decide which shoes to wear! I’d really appreciate your votes.

  • Wear the blush patent heels: they are so cute and classy!
  • Wear the sage patent flats: they are so cute and comfy!
  • Wear both: the heels for the ceremony and the flats for the receptions! Who cares if your dress hem gets dirty anyway?

How did you find your wedding shoes—or pairs of wedding shoes?

I love the heels! They give you better posture! And are supper cute! You could always bring the flats in case your feet hurt later!

I am also glad to see that I am not the only one to have non-wedding-bridal shoes! Yours a so cute! I love the silver!

How could you not buy the $49.99 Jimmy Choo shoes?!?!?!?

haha sorry. I like either the heels or the peeptoe flats. The other flats are okay but just not my taste :)

i think you should do heels for ceremony and flats for after…i am a total high heel junky and rarely EVER wear flats…yet i wore flats for the pix and the reception…you’ll be on your feet A TON and even though i only wore heels for the ceremony as it turned out, my back was sore at the end of the night since you’ll be standing practically all day….sooo…that’s my 2 cents…and i LOVE the kate spade shoes….adorable!

Ahh! That is a very tough call. On one hand, I am very pro-flats (I am quite pleased to have the excuse of getting married in the grass). But at the same time, I love the blush heels and I agree that they may give you better posture. I realize that was totally unhelpful…but on the bright side, you can’t go wrong!

The metallic flats are ADORABLE but the heels will make you look statuesque and, as PP said, give you better posture. Wear those for the ceremony and pics but then slip on the flats for the walking/relaxing portions of the festivities. :)

The heels! You can always slip them off after the ceremony if they get uncomfortable!

Where them ALL! Ok, I know that’s not possible, but it’s a good idea, yes? I think you should try the dress on with all three, see which you like better. I did that with mine, and it was amazing how quickly I made up my mind once they were paired with the dress!

I say go with both flats and your heels! If you’re anything like me, your feet will start screaming after wearing heels for more than an hour, and you’ll want your flats anyway. Oh, and BTW, no matter what you do, your dress will get filthy! Not in a highly noticeable way, but yes, filthy (I think it took me all of five minutes, but I blame all the people who stepped on my train while coming in for a hug). Here’s my thoughts: go with the heels for the Vegas ceremony and pictures, the Kate Spade’s for the Vegas reception, and your cute green flats for the at-home reception. That way, you get to wear them all! And I totally remember seeing you in the Kate Spade’s, and they are gorgeous! :)

I agree with Miss Fox, try the dress with them all. My gut reaction, though, is to start in heels and switch to flats as needed. All of your shoes are adorable!

My shoes are their own story - I was literally stalking my potential third pair online when I saw this very post - HA! I may be checking them out after work today. ;)

@Everyone: Thanks for all of your thoughts and ideas! Everyone has raised such interesting points! I do think that the heels and the flats (maybe both pairs???) will make an appearance over the course of the wedding events.
@FourthFireworks: When I showed the shoes to Mr. Mole, he performed a series of facial expressions that meant “haha-those-are-ridiculous-oh-wait-she-wants-my-opinion?-um-whatever-you-think-they-are-interesting!”. I laughed and put them down. They were lovely, but they weren’t my style. Hopefully someone else who appreciates them more will snatch them up!

@poelette13: Hey, I can’t tell you not to look. After all, I have three pairs myself. ;)

The peeptoe flats, regardless of whether you’ve worn them already! OK, OK that wasn’t one of your options. But I’m not a huge fan of the first pair of flats, so I’d have to vote for the heels! Unless, of course, you find another option between now and then… muahaha…

@Miss Ladyfingers: Haha! I am now starting to get swayed in the direction of the Kate Spade shoes. This is truly a first world problem.

I’d wear your heels for the ceremony - and switch to the awesome pearly flats for walking/reception dancing. :)

I say wear both. Start with the heels and switch to the flats later.

As far as the Jimmy Choos go…what do they look like? Can you find a picture online? I’d totally pay you to go snatch them up for me if they’re cute.

@Mrs. Jaguar: It looks like that combination is winning!
@mdlapaz: They were white satin peeptoe d’orsay pumps with a sparkly, oval piece at the toe. I might be going back that way this weekend, but I don’t know if they’ll still be there!

I’d wear the heels for the ceremony and have someone bring your flats to the reception. That way you don’t HAVE to switch out of the heels if your feet are feeling fine, but you can if you want to. My mom bought me some white rhinestoned flip flop wedges. I swore and swore and swore that I was just going to wear my heels all night, but as soon as the formal dances were over I ran to where I knew the shoes were waiting and changed just about as fast as I could. I was SO thankful to have something comfy to wear.
