No More Running of the Brides

November 3rd, 2011 @ 8:16 am by Mrs. Sunhat

It’s a sad day for bargain hunting brides. Filene’s Basement, a subsidiary of discount retailer Syms Corp., has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and plans to liquidate operations. This is the third time Filene’s has gone through bankruptcy and it appears to be the final hurrah. (Read a full article of the announcement at ChicagoTribune.com.)

It is no coincidence the bankruptcy was announced just in time for the upcoming holiday season. There really seems like no better time to liquidate inventory. The word is that liquidation will run through January 2012 and store closings will occur when the merchandise is depleted.

What this ultimately means for brides, and future brides-to-be, is that the famous “Running of the Brides” events are a thing of the past.

While this event was something I was never compelled to attend, many of our bees have and have shared amazing stories of their experiences. I loved watching the news clips showing the initial rush of the crowd and seeing all the people camped out in front of the Chicago store as I walked to my office from the train. It was fun hearing stories of ladies who gathered their bridal party together, made matching shirts, and developed a strategy to snatch up the most dresses and find the best try-on location. So many women dedicated to finding that perfect dress at an amazing price—especially during these troubled economic times. It appears that is all over now. *tear*

There is currently no word if there will be a final Running event to clear out any remaining bridal inventory. For anyone who was hoping to attend an event at some point, I would definitely keep your ears open! You never know what the retailer has planned for its final days.

Does this news impact you in any way? Were you hoping to be a Running Bride yourself someday?

I’m so sad. I used to live in Boston and shopped at the original Filene’s. There is a Filene’s just outside Boston, in Newton, MA, that always has exclusive designer items (think Prada, Armani, etc.). It was always one of my stops when I went back to Boston for business.

I think more salons are staging their own “blowout” sales, so perhaps more people will have access to these sorts of events.

Well, I live in NYC and I never did go. I always thought that when it came right down to it I would but the thought of fighting off all those ladies, nah! I went to a bridal salon. I used to go to the Filene’s in NYC but then the one I went to on 18th closed. I guess the other one is closing now. I have a gift card from them, should go use it now!!

I heard this on the news last night. I would not want to shop for my dress that way, but I was really hoping to be on a team some day! I think it would be a great use of my roller derby skills!

I’m so bummed to hear about this. First Priscilla, now Filene’s Basement and their Running of the Brides… the stops on my imagined future dress shopping tour are all disappearing!

This is so sad! I didn’t get a dress at ROTB, but I had so much fun participating. I’m sad to see this tradition go.

Oh no, I just got my dress at the DC Running of the Brides last month. I had always wanted to go to one. So glad I got the chance, but sad that it is the end of an era.
