About Miss Elk

Uh Oh Proposal

November 3rd, 2011 @ 12:16 pm by Miss Elk

For a number of reasons, including the fact that our six-year anniversary was fast approaching, I had a feeling my beautiful ring, which I had chosen months earlier, was probably hidden somewhere in our apartment. Being a little bit crazy ridiculous, and not dealing well with surprises, I found myself browsing the areas of the apartment I thought were most likely to safely house her. After days of this browsing and pretty much exploring every possibility I had given up…until two days before our anniversary. While changing into comfy clothes after school, my eyes glanced up and I realized there was a heap of clothing Mr. Elk never touched at the top of the closet, almost completely out of my reach. I had never checked under this heap! I stuck my hand under, got on my tippy toes, and felt the edge of something hard…this was it!!! I couldn’t stop myself. In all my craziness I grabbed it and tried on the ring.

It was GORGEOUS, and now that I knew it was there I could put it back and leave it be until the proposal, right? WRONG. I was so excited that, even though I placed the box back in its hiding spot, I found myself drawn back to try it on again. I reached up and grabbed it and…the box BROKE!!! AHHHHH! I didn’t know what to do. Mr. Elk was in the other room, and there was no fixing the box. I shoved the broken box back in its hiding spot and prayed that he would think he was the one who broke it.

The day after I broke the box, I went to school as usual but was freaking out inside. I was on my surgery rotation, which entailed very long hours, so there was no time for me to be alone in the apartment to fix the box. Moreover, the box had already been broken for a number of hours. If Mr. Elk had checked on it and found it broken and then came back to a normal box, he would obviously know I had found the ring. There was nothing for me to do but hope he believed he broke the box himself.

I came home that evening nervous. It had been a long day, and I just wanted to collapse on the couch, but Mr. Elk as usual decided to pick me up and throw me on the bed. As we lay there, talking about our day, he reached under the pillow, pulled out the ring box, and said, “So…will you marry me?” I burst into tears, apologizing profusely for my ring-seeking behavior—it was obvious he knew. I don’t even think I said yes! Luckily, I didn’t ruin things too much. He was planning on giving me the ring in the same way but one day later on our anniversary. And there you have my zany proposal story. And while he could have been angry, Mr. Elk says he wouldn’t expect anything else from me. He knows I don’t deal well with surprises, and moreover he is glad he has something silly to hold over my head whenever we may have disagreements in the future.

My husband is the same way with surprises & it drives me CRAZY! I love a great surprise. We agreed when we have kids he will be the only one to know the gender so at least I can be surprised. LOL!- you’re story is pretty funny though & at least your FI knew you well enough to not be upset about it! Congrats!

After we went ring shopping I didn’t expect him to propose for another year or so but a few months later I broke down one night and started talking about how I never thought it would happen and being a cry baby…. right…. the next day he proposed. He was planning to do it that day (4th of July) all along and he said it killed him not to tell me the previous night when I was so upset.

I’m glad he didn’t though because it was an awesome surprise (btw it’s on YoutTube if anyone wants to see how truly surprised I was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHq5o9dQjpg)

I would have done the same thing. I am always snooping around before Christmas or my birthday searching for presents. I was the same way as a child. I hate surprises!

Also, love your ring!! I’ve been drawn to antique/vintage rings as well.

Ooh, I don’t deal well with surprises, either - it definitely led to some proposal details being revealed in advance… but I never saw the ring in person until he proposed!

I am very much the same way. Though I am not yet engaged, I know it will be coming in march or april. It’s going to be very difficult to not become anxious once march comes around. Thankfully, I am getting my mother’s ring, so there is not surprise there.

I didnt know he had bought the ring but I had given him my diamond earrings to do so. Turns out he had the ring for 3 months before proposing. I am a TERRIBLE looker of things! I knew about 2 hours prior to the proposal when he INSISTED we travel to a restaurant a ways away from our hotel on a weekend trip, the restaurant had memories. It was great, Im glad I didnt see the ring prior to that moment. He picked one we hadn’t seen together before and its perfect, Aww!

That’s a heck of a story! I’m not much of a snooper but if I do, I’m super anal about putting things back exactly as they were. I would have freaked over the broken box.

Your ring is STUNNING - and I love that he sort of already knew you’d found it. ;)

You’re adorable!! I remember searching through Foxy’s dresser to see if there was a ring box.. no luck, seeing as we ended up picking out the ring after he proposed. I totally know the crazy town feeling though!

I’m getting engaged on December 19th at Citricos (at Disney World). How do I know this? Because I was checking dinner reservations on the Disney World trip planner. And I clicked on this new restaurant I didn’t remembering making a reservation for. Under a box that asked “What are you celebrating?” Boyfriend wrote, “Engagement.” And that’s how I ruined it. :-(
