About Mrs. Mole

Ring, Ring, Ring! Hello, Rings.

November 3rd, 2011 @ 5:49 am by Mrs. Mole

For someone who never wears jewelry, Mr. Mole had a pretty definite idea of what he wanted in a wedding ring. He wanted something lightweight, durable, and inexpensive. Now, the last quality is not necessarily something people typically search out in a piece of jewelry that is supposed to signify forever: “Nah, babe, just get me the cheapest ring possible. Whatevs.” However, Mr. Mole, who grew up hearing the story about how his father lost his wedding band within a few weeks of owning it, wanted something that could be replaced if necessary.

We debated tungsten for a while before ultimately deciding on titanium. Like Mr. Pashima, Mr. Mole was excited about wearing a metal that is used in space shuttles. We went into some traditional jewelry stores, only to get the runaround. The sales clerks kept steering us toward white gold or platinum. They told us that titanium couldn’t be made in Mr. Mole’s quarter-size (not true). They even told us that titanium could cause Mr. Mole’s fingers to have to be amputated in an accident (really not true, but this was probably my favorite wedding-related sales tactic). So we walked away from brick-and-mortar stores and turned to Etsy.

Titanium rings!

On Etsy, we found the shop Titanium Knights. Mr. Mole fell in love with a satin-finish ring that had an inlay of white gold. He explained that he wanted our rings to match in some way. I was sold. We ordered it in his quarter-size and everything.

On my hand

I also bought a stand-in ring to wear whenever I don’t feel comfortable wearing my engagement ring. I normally wear it to the gym; thus, I have nicknamed it “Jim.”

Post-gym, post-manicure

Now that you know the story of Mr. Mole’s ring, it’s time to share the story of my wedding band. Ready? We went to a store and bought it. Exciting, huh? I had a good idea of what I wanted, and we were lucky enough to find it on the first try.

What is the story of your wedding rings? Did you both know what you were looking for in advance, or did you just have to try on a lot of different styles?

Both of your rings are lovely! And I love that you have a work out ring, I’m thinking of doing the same thing :)

Love your rings! I have also heard the amputation rumor - we have not started shopping for wedding bands so I had never investigated it further, but I have definitely heard it somewhere.

I love those. I haven’t decided yet what to do about wedding bands… FH originally wanted something cool and masculine like the titanium, but he inherited his grandfather’s big gold band. It’s way too big for him and not his style, but he is very close with his grandpa and lost his grandmother recently, so I think we want to find a way to make it work.

@Mrs. Pony: I feel so weird without anything on my finger now, but I am too scared of knocking my engagement ring against any weights. So Jim works out perfectly.
@Miss Dalmatian: It’s a crazy rumor! Snopes even addressed it a few years ago.
@mrsdooks: Could you melt it down and rework it into a different ring? Then it would be the right size/style but still his grandfather’s gold?

Argh, all of the other comments just popped up after I posted!

@tender_loving_care: I like the puns too much for my own good.
@Cecilia: Thanks! I got my ring at Rogers & Holland in Milwaukee.
@missmerlee: Aren’t they great! They were really easy to work with, even though we made a goof on Mr. Mole’s size.
@futureMFG: Thanks! He has a good eye. :)

We’re almost 4 months into our marriage and I’ve developed the habit of only wearing my sparkly wedding band (sans engagement ring) to work on our casual Fridays. The e-ring is a little bulky so my hands enjoy having a little freedom one day a week.

Well, the hubby has started mentioning (joking?) more often that “Why do you hate your e-ring. I paid so much more for that one. Plus, single guys only look for for the big rock, they won’t know you’re married!”

I told him he was just being dramatic, but I’m starting to wonder if it really bothers him? I’ll probably make an effort to wear it every day.

For the record, I don’t exercise in my rings and neither of us sleeps in our rings. lol.

Let me rephrase that first sentence… I wear only my wedding band on fridays. I DO wear it all the rest of the time I have my e-ring on. Sorry, it sounded confusing when I reread it!

@ItsPronounced_ABear: Mr. Mole has made that joke before too! When I first got my engagement ring, I never wanted to take it off. Now I sometimes forget to switch and put it back on.
