Will This Ring Shatter?

November 3rd, 2011 @ 11:15 am by Miss Doe

A few weeks ago Mr. Buck and I were at Shane Co getting my engagement ring cleaned and inspected. Since we were there, we decided to go ahead and try on some wedding bands. We didn’t have an exact timeline of when we were going to purchase wedding bands. We figured when we found ones we liked, we would buy them.

Mr. Buck does not wear any type of jewelry…not even a watch. The salesman told him that he doesn’t like to wear jewelry either, only a watch and his wedding band. Mr. Buck proceeded to tell him that the only jewelry he wears is his sunglasses. Sorry Mr. Buck, sunglasses don’t count as jewelry! This means that we needed to find a wedding band for him that was comfortable and not flashy.

His first question to the salesman was, “what ring is lowest on the conductivity rating?”

Yeah, he definitely threw this poor salesman a curve ball. He did not have an answer to him, but he said he would go find out. While he was doing the investigating I looked at Mr. Buck like, really? Why does that matter? (Honestly, I did not even know what conductivity rating meant.) Being that Mr. Buck is a smarty pants, he had already thought this all out.

You see, Mr. Buck and his dad enjoy restoring classic cars. Currently Mr. Buck is in the process of restoring an old Dodge Challenger. His concern was that if he is around any type of sparks or flames that his ring would shatter. Apparently some metals have a higher rating for being conductive to heat, whereas other metals are less conductive. Who knew!

The salesman came back after talking to his boss and learned that gold is among the highest on the conductivity rating and titanium is among the lowest, which meant that would limit us to looking at titanium rings. Titanium is great because it is nearly indestructible; the only problem is that it cannot be resized.

We tried on a few different options and some were just a little too flashy for him or not very comfortable. He also is a size 9.5 and most of the rings they had were either 9, 10 or 11. The nice salesman quietly went in the back and came out with a ring that they were getting read to discontinue. He was hoping it might fit our specifications.

This ring turned out to be positively perfect in every single way. It was titanium, in his size, not flashy, and he said it is very comfortable. We decided to go ahead and buy this ring since it seemed as though it all fell into place perfectly.

Next up, the quest for MY wedding band! Oh come on, you didn’t think I was going to let him have all the fun did you?

Have you heard of the conductivity rating in rings? Did that dictate which type of ring your fiance would choose?

Nice find!

Hadn’t heard of conductivity, but we did hear that tungsten was basically indestructible (and also cannot be sized). This was important to FH because he works out a lot and didn’t want to scuff his ring up the first time he wore it to the gym, he didn’t want to not wear the ring to the gym, and he didn’t want to buy a gym-only ring. Tungsten won!

In fact, after seeing how durable his band is (yes, we tried keying it; no, there are no marks!), I ordered a cheaper version from Amazon for myself in addition to my formal gold and diamond band. This way I can match him and have my ring on without worrying about losing diamonds while cleaning, etc.

ha ha I had no idea what that meant. Thanks for the clarification Miss Doe! I would’ve never thought of that…

rings have to take a lot of heat before they would break. I mean, they have to be heated with a blowtorch for so long, it would give him 3rd degree burns if he was wearing it at the time.

I used to be a metal smith.

Now, that’s a question that I would have never thought to ask. Mr. Mole has a titanium ring too. (Looks like rings are on everyone’s minds today!)

FWIW - My friend’s husband has had 3 titanium rings over the 8 years they’ve been married due to weight loss/gain.

My DH wanted gold because he’s very traditional and also because he wanted to be able to have it sized if need be. We bought one of those protection plans so he can have it dipped, buffed, etc. - whenever he wants. That being said, with gold being expensive right now, it might have been cheaper to buy several titanium or tungsten over the years compared to one gold ring…

My fiance is an electrician and so he didn’t want to get/wear a ring at all … which made me a little sad lol. But really, finger literally being removed from the ring down because of electricity is also not what I wanted. So I think we will get him one of these types .. he will take it off when doing high risk stuff, and can’t hurt it or himself when he isn’t!

Yeah, I agree with MStivers, he should not wear rings when working around flames or sparks. My father is a welder and he said another welder he knew had a spark hit his wedding ring and it burned the guy’s finger so bad that it had to be amputated. It’s not worth it!

My fiance has to worry about electrical currents also. But he also has to consider his hand being smashed and the titanium does not break so if it were smashed your finger could be pinched in between it. We went with White Gold for that reason.

@janie-janie: We were actually told by a few sources that there has actually Bren many cases where people have come in with shattered rings due to heat. So, we kind of went off that. Better safe than sorry!
@calypso522: My goodness! Not good! I think we are looking more at a broad sense of being safe. Of course if he is working on heavy duty stuff, he wouldn’t wear it.
@Army Bride: Hand smashing? Ouch! Let’s hope that doesn’t happen to either of our guys!

I would say for an all around indestructible ring…titanium is a good deal!

@poelette13: Haha I love that you tried keying the ring..too funny!
@futureMrsCPT: No prob! :)
@Miss Mole: yay for titanium! It’s good stuff :)
@78h2o: That is the great thing about gold is you can rebuff dip and resize.
@Mrs. Pony: Haha the sales guys’ face said it all haha
@MStivers: Exactly! Definitely take it off during high risk stuff but for just precautionary reasons, it’s a great ring to have.
@Coffee cup: They do know how to ask all the right questions!

Never heard of it! Mr. Jag bought a white gold ring (scratched like WHOA already) and we’re looking into a new metal stand-in for him for his anniversary! :)

I had heard of this, probably because my parents have worked in jewelry ;)

It’s great that he found something he likes! It looks like such a nice ring! Also, so awesome that the jeweler had this ring in the back that was being discontinued!!

I’m impressed that Mr Buck thought to research and ask that!! I’m really loving the tungsten and titanium bands.. not only are they nearly indestructible, they also tend to weigh a heckuvalot less than gold or platinum. Love the ring he picked, btw!

Awesome choice! This is the exact ring my husband chose when we got married almost 4 years ago. Its sad that its being discontinued, he gets so many compliments on it because its so different.

I kind of like the idea of a gold ring. My FH has giant hands (size 12.5) and I special ordered a plain gold band for him as that was his choice. I don’t care if it gets scuffed, scratched and, luckily, he works at a desk all day. Like the lines on one’s face, that scruffy ring shows the happy and sad times and that has never been taken off during any of them. That is kind of appealing to me…I know, it’s weird.
