Centerpiece Mock-Ups

November 4th, 2011 @ 6:58 am by Mrs. Mole

Last weekend, Mr. Mole and I went shopping at Ikea in order to find the materials for our candle centerpieces. This might be the closest that I get to being a DIY’er, folks. Anyway, it was a successful shopping trip that lead to a successful mock-up on our dining room table (incidentally, also from Ikea).

The source of a large amount of our possessions: Ikea in Carson, California

Like all Ikea stores, this one is designed to be a labyrinth that takes you through every department before you can find the checkout. This gave Mr. Mole the chance to pick up and pose with a variety of ridiculous things.

I don’t even know what these are.

We finally found the “decoration” department on the third floor. There, we picked up the Cylinder vase set, the Fenomen block candle set, the Joker candle dish, the Glimma candle holder set, and the Ribba picture frame.

Once we got home, I set everything up on our table to see how well we did.

Each of the four picture frames is going to have a photo of us in an important location: Chicago, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Las Vegas. These cities all represent different stages of our relationship: the beginning, the middle, the engagement, the marriage.

The total cost of four sets of these centerpieces came to be around $110 plus tax. But I am thinking that we might add something else to them. Maybe some rose petals? What would you add to these centerpieces to make them pop a little more? Or do you like them as is?

Did you do some trials and test runs with your centerpieces before the big day?

I think rose petals would be perfect! Maybe you can also add small mirrors on the table?

My friend has the same idea for her wedding! I think it’s simplistic and awesome :) If you do fake rose petals, there are some great ones on Amazon that my friend is purchasing for her centerpieces and they look pretty real.

I love centerpieces that allow guests to see each other across the table. Maybe add some colorful rocks? I like the simplicity, though.

I love Ikea and am planning on going next week! They have so much great stuff! :)

Have you thought about putting anything INSIDE the 3 taller cylinders? For example, I put some (unground) coffee beans at the base of our cylinders because I am a total coffee fiend, hehe. But you could put some rose petals IN each of the cylinders too, for extra pop of clor!

Also, I would pre-burn all of those candles so they wouldn’t be pointy and would be flatter… but I am anal like that ;)

P.S. Is your venue ok with 2 of your candles being un-enclosed? Here in Chicago, we can’t have any exposed flames…

What if the “extras” were unique to each table- something that ties it to the city where the photograph was taken? Glitter for Vegas? Leaves or petals or rocks or those clear glass beads that they put in fish tanks for the other cities?

Ikea is the best! I think your mock-ups look great. I would try buying rose petals or colorful rocks and see how they look - I think it may be a great addition!

What about colored sand in the glasses? Is that to beachy?

Hi! would you mind sharing the cost of the set of vases? I looked on the web site but just can’t seem to find them… I think they look great :) but I would add something to the candles, I’m huge fan of the coffee bean look.

@SaraP2012: Mirrors would also be a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion!
@outlandishmeow: Oooh, tell me more! Do you know what brand?
@soyjoy222: Let me know if you find anything good! ;)
@Mrs. Emerald: Doh I didn’t even check! If not, we can switch the smaller two candles to tealights. Thanks so much for making sure I don’t plan before figuring out those types of important details. :)
@Renee: Creative idea! I’ll have to put on my thinking cap. One of my friends suggested something similar too, with poker chips and bottle caps.
@mija22: Thanks! We alternate between that one and the one in Burbank.
@Mrs. Pony: Petals seem to be a great idea! I’m going to have to do another mock-up soon.
@Miss Dalmatian: Thanks for sharing your ideas!
@Cecilia: I will have to try that out too. Thanks!
@susthornton: Of course! The cylinder vases are 19.99 for 3. They also come in a shorter, wider set. I think you can also find them in blue as well.

I think adding mirrors would detract from the classic simplicity of the centerpieces. Have you thought of adding maybe one or two really slim vases with a few flowers in each?

We have those candles, too! Love ‘em. I think the addition of petals would be just lovely and the right amount of POP that you’re looking for!

I like your centerpieces a lot! Have you thought about introducing some height in some way (other than the vase height)? You can buy empty boxes (made from a really heavy cardboard, either circle or square) at Michael’s or a similar craft store and paint them. You could put a few items on those and some off to mix it up.

@Aud1628: Thanks! Mr. Mole has been incredibly helpful in this whole wedding planning process, including all of the shopping trips!
@shirasagi: Oh, that’s a direction that I haven’t thought about. I’ll have to try that out too!
@Miss Sunhat: A fireplace is on the “must have” list for when we buy property in CA! I love the look of candles in a fireplace.
@Future Army Wife: Ikea is a lifesaver!
@Miss Fox: Thanks! It looks like I need to find some rose petals.
@jackiet314: Budget friendly + cute = awesome idea. Haha
@Alexa @ A Life in Drive: Oh interesting! I will have to see if Mr. Mole wants to make another scouting trip with me to Michael’s. Thanks for the idea!
