Miss Fox, Washington DC/Havre de Grace, MD Age and Occupation: 26, Massage Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Field Support Engineer Engagement Date: April 18, 2010 Wedding Date: June 2012 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m a dancer turned massage therapist who was born and raised in New York. Alas, true love has brought me “south” where I still maintain my penchants for pretty shoes, wine, crossword puzzles, cherry blossoms, and the Mets. I own more sunglasses than a normal person should and don’t eat red meat (though I make up for it by eating my weight in sushi). I tend to be a big planner who likes to get things started early, but generally end up being indecisive and procrastinating when it comes down to it. I have a (not so) secret crush on Chris Carrabba, but my loyalty and love ultimately goes to the future hubs, of course! Together, my Foxy man and I love to discuss (read: debate) politics and current events, have Mario Kart and Scrabble duels, and just laugh. A lot. We’re hoping and planning for a laid back, fun, summery, rustic vibe to our June wedding that will be genuinely “us” – that is, if we finally make some decisions. Huzzah!
About Miss Fox

A Worthy Replacement

November 7th, 2011 @ 12:18 pm by Miss Fox

Since I was a wee newbee and just started checking out the community boards, I’ve noticed and taken part in several threads about how (in)frequently people wear their engagement rings (most recently, this one). As for me? I generally keep mine on as much as possible, except when cooking with raw meat, eating messy food (like crabs!), and when I shampoo my hair (since it’s slightly loose and I’m afraid of watching it disappear from my life forever down the drain). I’ll wear it 99% of the other times, though. Oh, except for work (I guess that’s a big chunk of time, huh?) since I don’t think my massage clients would appreciate a pointy ol’ rock in their back. Or maybe they would. Who knows.

Well I have to tell you, I’ve been a bit thrown off these past few weeks. Foxy and I decided to get started on the wedding band process(!), which for me means giving the jeweler my ring so they can 1. clean it, 2. redip it (darn you, white gold), and 3. take an imprint and make a wax copy of it to create my band. SO exciting (more on that soon!) but SO sad at the same time. I’ve been sans e-ring since early October-ish, and I feel naked. I always find myself trying to feel for the ring with my left thumb and…it’s just not there.

What to do besides get a replacement band?

Initially, I bought a cheapo CZ ring from Kohl’s when I decided not to bring my real bling to Mexico back in April. While I love to wear my e-ring as much as possible, I didn’t want to expose it to sunscreen and salt water every day, nor did I want to take it off and leave it in the room. The only bummer to the replacement ring was that after two days in the sun and surf, I was left with a nasty looking green finger which rendered that ring pretty much done for after that. I know that a quick coat of clear nail polish will probably hold it up for another beach day or two (or, you know, I could just not wear my ring all the time). It worked for the time being, but I wouldn’t use that ring as a general replacement, as I am in need for currently.

This story has a happy ending, though! Lucky for me, I recently inherited a gorgeous vintage ring from my mom, sort of as an early Christmas gift and post-Grammy-passing-away inheritance. The ring has been in the family for at least a hundred years and I just love the meaning and beauty of it.’

A Worthy Replacement : wedding havre de grace rings Untitled 1 Untitled-1

It’s hard to tell with my shoddy iPhone pictures, but there are two bigger diamonds of different sizes on the top, flanked by two much smaller diamonds on the sides. It’s making a decent replacement for day-to-day wear so far, but since it’s a bit too big for my ring finger and worth way more than I care to admit (or realized, until Foxy Mama pointed it out), I find that I only really wear this ring when I go out-out. Not to work (since I can’t wear it anyway), not around the house (since I’m afraid of losing it)…maybe three times a week or so. And it sucks. I miss my ring!! I was given an estimate from the jeweler of having mine back by early November, so here’s hoping it’s soon!

How often do you wear (or not wear) your engagement ring? Do you have a replacement for times when you can’t wear it?

I have to take my ring in for repair (center stone is rattling in its setting after only a month!) tonight and expect to be without it for a week or two. NOT looking forward to that as I wear it unless I’m sleeping or showering.

Like you, though, I have an antique stand-in in my jewelry box: a white gold and sapphire ring my Great (great?) uncle brought back from Italy when he was stationed there in WWII. It seems more fitting to use that than any of my other rings, for some reason.

I was just thinking today about this very thing, about people (not) wearing their engagement rings. I always see people say they forget to put it on in the morning, but I never do because it wasn’t off in the first place. I take it off, as you said, when dealing with yucky food like raw meat, or when I’m doing renovation in the house and major cleaning. That’s about it!

I haven’t taken mine off at all with the exception of when I had surgery a few weeks ago and they ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT LET ME WEAR IT INTO THE OPERATING ROOM!!!! GAAAAH!! Living near and spending every possible moment on the beach this summer, I had no problem with sand/salt/sunscreen (or crabs for that matter!) with my ring. Just a nice little brushing with soap and water and a soft kids toothbrush and she looks good as new! :-)

Your grandma’s ring is lovely!
I don’t wear my ring all the time; never when sleeping, when I’m working out, or when it could get dirty. I hope you get your ring back soon!

i bought a replacement ring from target…i had my ring gone the first time for about 6 weeks because it needed to be sent back to the designer to be resized. and then i got it back and less than a week later i had to send it back because some of the prongs were loose on the band and i was losing some of the pave diamonds. but other than to wash dishes and cooking with raw meat, mine stays on.

you’re like me I don’t wear my ring in the shower, to bed or sometimes cooking. I don’t want it to get to scratched up or something happen to it! But the replacement ring is a good idea!

HAHA I thought I was the only one that feels for my ring with my thumb… :)
Other than for putting on lotion or cleaning I never take it off :) I just feel incomplete without it!

I wear mine All the time. I have a toothbrush set aside to scrub and clean it as needed. And i lived in Hawaii and wore it at the beach all the time. (I did get a cheap band slightly smaller to put on the outside of the ring for that just in case while swimming in the ocean) But I don’t take mine off.

Your spare is beautiful (and with a good story to boot). I occasionally slip on a sapphire band that FH bought me just to mix it up.

My fiance is a gemologist/jeweler and he prohibits (and I mean prohibit lol) me from wearing my ring or any other my jewelry to bed. He said that is the number one way to lose a diamond–he said there can be a lot of wear and tear while sleeping (tossing and turning) which can loosen up the setting. He also tells me to be very careful when around water so I don’t usually shower or swim with it. I keep a ceramic ring box that we painted on our mexican vacation when he proposed to me on my nightstand and I put the ring there before I fall asleep and put it back on my hand the next morning as I am on my way out for the day.

“HAHA I thought I was the only one that feels for my ring with my thumb…” count me in on that too! Glad to hear it’s normal ;)

I can’t even imagine forgetting to put it on. The time I did forget to put on my ring before going out the door (and didn’t realise until I turned the car on and looked at my hand on the steering wheel), I went back into the house to get it. I stress out if I’m not wearing it – if I’m wearing it I know exactly where it is :)

I almost always wear mine. I leave touching raw meat (barf) to Mr CB, so I basically only take mine off when I do dishes in the sink. We don’t have a garden, but I’d take it off if I was gardening. Or renovating, but we live in a rented condo, so we can’t renovate anything either.

I harldy ever wear my ring. I don’t wear it when I’m asleep, when I shower, when I cook, when I’m doing any exercise, when I work, when i put on lotion. LoL. I wish i could wear it more but i don’t want to get it all gross. I’m an Emergency Room nurse and will probably never ever wear it to work. Once we are married i do plan on wearing my band to work. MAny of the nurses at work do wear there rings, but it’s just not for me. Ive scratched myself with my ring and would probably cause I huge laceration on a patient
and im just not going to do that to someone. Or put myself at risk by putting a hole thru my gloves andgetting someone elses body fluids on me.

LOVE that ring! Super awesome.

I wear mine as much as possible. I don’t wear it to the beach (though, I put it on IMMEDIATELY after we leave!) or in the pool (found out chlorine & aquamarine don’t mix… apparently this stone doesn’t mesh w/ it’s name!) I will also take it off when doing heavy dishes and stuff. But for the most part? It’s always on me.

@thirdtimebride: I hope they get your ring fixed soon for you.. I would hate to not have my rind after only a month! And your antique replacement sounds just gorgeous!
@gmcurtis: I hear you! I’ve gotten more “used to” not wearing it lately since I have to, but I still panic when I go to feel for it and it’s not there!
@Ocean: Seeing that your username is ocean, I think it’s totally appropriate that you wear it to the beach constantly! ;) I’ve definitely worn mine in the pool before - it just gets all mucky and then I need to clean it and I’m lazy. Glad to know yours holds up with a little TLC, though!
@Mrs. Pony: Thank you!
@sarbear2814: Oh my goodness, you poor thing! Sorry you had to be separated from your ring for so long! Hopefully all is good now..?
@Aud1628: Definitely get one! Good for active or beachy vacations. :)
@lillioness0502: Ohh good point, I take mine off when applying lotion as well! Also - when I wrote that, I was really wondering if anyone would get what I mean, and considered taking a picture of my thumb feeling my ring finger.. and it look like I had deformed hands. So that was a no-go. ;)
@SoontobeBride: Super good call with getting an outside band.. I never thought of that!
@Future Army Wife: Thanks! Love that you switch it up with the sapphire.. a little change of pace is never a bad thing.
@sweetbrandy: So interesting.. I never heard anything bad about sleeping with it on, but then again, I never asked! I love that you have that little ceramic box!@miss.sarah: Same! One time I didn’t realize I didn’t have it on until we were halfway to a friends house an hour away (don’t know HOW that happened). It was sort of too late to go back and I felt so naked!
@Mrs. Cinnamon Bun: Haha you make me laugh, CB. ;) I generally leave the super yucky meat to the man (whole chicken? ew.).. maybe I should just let him take over with all of it.
@MissTBee: Totally makes sense why you don’t and can’t wear yours all the time!
@Candace: Thanks! Who knew about chlorine and aquamarine?!
