Alterations Without Altercations

November 8th, 2011 @ 1:22 pm by Mrs. Raccoon

My first fitting went well! Well…mostly. I showed up a few minutes early with my dress, shoes, proper undies, and payment all ready to go. The seamstresses were really nice, nobody got stuck with pins, and I was given plenty of privacy while changing.

I chose to have the alterations done where we purchased the dress mainly out of convenience. The more I think about it though, the happier I am with this decision. By doing this I know the person working has a lot of experience with wedding gowns.

My first request was that cups be sewn in. I didn’t want to worry about being poked by a bra or exposing it to everyone. Unfortunately, they only carried up to a size C when my cup size is more like Stanley.

Instead of going with my suggestion of allowing me to purchase the cups at another location and bring them in later, they got me into some expensive sucker-inner and brassiere contraption that left me saying, “I see what you did there.” I didn’t fight it because it did smooth out some places and make everything look pretty good.

I held my ground on the bustle refusal, though. My dress has a shorter sweep length train that I really don’t see being a problem. If it gets a little dirty or beat up I won’t mind at all.

I have to let you know something.

It’s OK, I like it—but I don’t love my dress. It isn’t some great statement of my personal style and I’m perfectly fine with that fact. I’m actually more excited about making a killer tree skirt out of it and saving some pieces for future little raccoon christening gowns after the wedding. Why do I feel like this is some sort of punishable bride-to-be crime?

My just all right for me dress from David’s Bridal purchased during a sale.

It doesn’t look like this style is even being made anymore.

Do you love, hate, or fall somewhere in between with your dress?

I love my dress, but I’m not in love with it. Haha. I fell in love with a discontinued dress and couldn’t get it, bought one that was all kinds of wrong for me, then ended up with the one I have. It’s basically what I saw myself in- lace, fit and flare, defined waist, simple- but strapless, which is still throwing me off a little (mostly because I don’t have a longline bra yet- once I have one I’m happy with I think I’ll be better). I’m ok with it though. I’m the only one who’s going to remember my dress- I’m not the type who wants to make this grand statement through my wedding dress.

My shoes, on the other hand… :)

My dress is pretty but I don’t love it. I’ve always hated strapless on me but ended up with a strapless. My Mom cried when I walked out of the dressing room- I felt like I had to buy it. lol

haha i bought the same dress on a whim, kind of like a backup because i wasn’t sure i could afford the dress i loved. It’s very pretty and looked nice on me but I wasn’t in love with it either. But had i not been lucky to find my dress used and half price, i would have been very happy to walk down the aisle in it. are you keeping the bow/flower? i saw online that a lot of people had it removed.

That sucker-inner contraption is life-changing. Except you can’t breathe deeply. That’s optional on wedding day, right?

I feel ya Raccoon. So much pressure is put on us to fall in love with our dress when in reality…it’s a dress. We have to keep that in perspective. But I do love your choice, it’s beautiful!

That dress is very pretty!!! You will never regret wearing such a classic! Very flattering shape. And you will love it after you’ve worn it to your wedding–because it will be your wedding dress!

I must say, I would really put in a bustle—-trust me, people will step on your dress all night long! They stepped on mine even after bustling simply because it is floor length. I would do some super easy hooks that bring up the fabric and hook at your waist and add just a little fullness at your behind would be super cute! (Rather than the pick-up kind 2/3 down the dress) :)

I was always just meh about my dress. I wasn’t in love with it. But I bought it off another bride for cheap which meant I didn’t have to deal with actually going out shopping. I HATE shopping. Anyways, the day of the wedding, I put it on and loved it. I don’t know what changed. It didn’t look any different, but I think it was the first time it felt like ‘mine’.
