About Miss Porcupine

America’s Next Top… Bride

November 9th, 2011 @ 11:17 am by Miss Porcupine

When it comes to the big day we ALL obsess over something related to our appearance. I have never heard of a bride who was like “um, I’ll wear my burlap sack and stick a ribbon around my bird’s nest unwashed fro.” Even the brides on My Big Redneck Wedding (oh where has that show gone?) care about their appearance—even if they were getting married over a swamp. *Nothing against real life self-proclaimed rednecks out there. That show was just freakin-a nuts!

My usual concerns for any event that involves looking nice includes worrying about breakouts, my big hair, flare ups of these annoying red bumps I get on my arms, and underarm boob. You know, that fun piece of blubber in the armpit area that looks like a baby boob when squashed at just the right angle.

Hmmm, I sound real attractive right now. I swear I’m not a troll living under a bridge on the regular, but when it comes to nice events I pay more attention to these things. And as a bride it’s on my mind, of course. Definitely a lot more. I think many of us can agree that we over analyze how we will look on our wedding day, and lately I’ve been thinking: WHY? I mean obviously we don’t want to look bad. But, why do we suddenly need to be perfect on ONE day—especially when our significant other, family, and friends already know what we look like pretty well.

Why in the who-ha do we have this obsessive need to look “perfect” on our wedding day. (MOVIES, TELEVISION, THE DEVIL?)

On a regular old Tuesday I like to shower, do something to make my hair look presentable, put on a normal amount of makeup, and match my clothes with some accessories. You know… look like a person. On a Friday night out I might apply a little more eyeliner; before a friend’s wedding I may stop eating carbohydrates every 19 minutes; and before a vacation I will probably get a haircut. Why on my wedding day do I need to add another layer of FIX THIS FIX THIS NOW to my life?

I’m not advocating going totally granola and going makeup free in a white t-shirt to our weddings. (I mean unless that’s your thing.) But, why do we over analyze every blemish, hangnail, and eyebrow hair? On our wedding day there will still be make-up, good lighting, and Photoshop. We can’t magically become perfect on our wedding day. Even Kate Middleton had a…  (okay, actually she looked perfect—whatever).

My point is that we want to look back at pictures and see ourselves. Not someone who emerged from a makeover special on the Today show. Obviously, we don’t want to look like we rolled out of bed, but we don’t need to look like a picture out of Barbie’s Dream Wedding Day.

Yes, I’m still concerned about a bad breakout or a big-hair day. I worry about spilling alcoholic libations on my white gown. But, I will not let myself get crazy. At least I can try. I’m sure my memory will wipe this concept clear from my mind about 19 hours before my wedding.

Anyone else trying not to freak out about their appearance on their wedding day? Anyone else out there watch My Big Redneck Wedding?? I can’t be the only one! Gah, that show was so good!

Big Deep Breath Porcupine! I will tell you a secret, although Kate “did her own makeup” LOL she had a team of 22 artists from Bobbi Brown, that checked everything over and made sure it was not only perfect for natural light, but for TV. You will be beautiful on your big day.

I totally agree. The point is to look like your beautiful self, right? Right!!

(Side note: I also get annoying bumps on my arms. I read somewhere that using an alpha-hydroxy/lactic acid product helps, and tried using AmLactin. Smells TERRIBLE, but it totally worked.)

Never saw the show and yes I’m overthinking my appearnce. I’m holding off ordering my dress because I refuse to believe I’ll still be a size 14 on my wedding day. I know I can get the dress altered (spending even more money) but the tag will read 14 and haunt me. I should just order it right? Afterall I am only 6 months out.

Also, Kate Middleton had a honker of a zit on the side of her face that was hardly noticeable…zits happen to royalty too!

I laughed out loud reading this! I also worry about red bumps on my arms, and last night I was in the elevator of my building, looking in the mirror trying to hold my arms out “just so” so that my underarm boobs wouldn’t show. And if theres any one thing I wish I had in that statement you made it’s the big hair. I have the opposite problem, the thickness of my ‘do is woefully inadequate…I need some poof!!

Amen, lady! I came down with The Biggest Zit Known to Man four days before the wedding. Not to get too graphic, but it broke and scabbed and GAH it was awful. I got a cortisone shot two days before the wedding and by the day of, it had shrunk to barely nothing. My makeup artist slathered every coverup known to man on it and you couldn’t even see it. Our photographer does know how to retouch. In the end, you’ll be fine ;)

HA was just complaining about my break out that’s on my chest. It’s like a bullseye: http://roccosrevolution.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/sinead-oconnor-jesus-tattoo-1028-03-480×720.jpg

But I agree to look like yourself and be happy… I just want to be happy with the pictures that I will be displaying all over the freakin house for 30 years. Enter: Photoshop for stupid breakouts. I mean, COME ON

I totally freaked out about every little thing too in the months leading up to the wedding, probably when I had too much time on my hands. In the end, I was too busy to obsess over everything, and had to settle on only worrying about a few things, like doing a two hour teeth whitening after our rehearsal. You’ll be a gorgeous bride :)

I freaked out when I bruised my leg THREE WEEKS before the wedding… LEG? My dress was floor length, it was on my mid thigh - Hubby was like, exactly how short is your dress??

I’ve been thinking about this A LOT lately as I start to make all sorts of beauty appoinments and get into better routines and things - WHY on earth am I spending all this effort to look “perfect” for a few hours and then I know we’ll end up having a mega awesome dance party and I’ll get all sweaty (per usual..) and my face will get all shiney!
Trying to keep it all in perspective as it gets closer to April

Yep, the freak outs are normal. I had major panic attacks about my bumpy arms and you know what? NOBODY CARED. Even *I* didn’t think about them once, I swear. You’ll have such a glow and so much love & excitement around you on the day that you seriously won’t think about it - and then after the wedding day, you’ll wonder what the fuss was about!

My Big Redneck Wedding was such a fine addition to American reality TV. Alas, no more. And Kate Middleton only had the entire fortune of the freaking Queen of England and an army of the world’s finest (insert anything here) at her disposal. If I breakout before the wedding, I srsly will cry.
