Do You Feel Like A Bride?

November 9th, 2011 @ 1:41 pm by Miss Doe

This past weekend I did what any bride does on lazy days…get caught up on wedding shows, duh. You know the lineup: Say Yes To The Dress, Platinum Weddings, Four Weddings, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding…and my new personal favorite, Brides of Beverly Hills.

These shows vary far and wide in its content. However, I started to notice a common theme. I kept hearing the same phrase over and over in each show.

“It makes me feel like a bride.”

Whether they were trying on their dress, veil, shoes, picking out flowers, cake tasting. Everyone was doing something different when they would proclaim, it made them feel like a bride.

I can’t say I have had a moment like that yet.

I have a tendency to over think and analyze everything and my brain is constantly running a million miles a minute. I haven’t really stopped and said yes, I feel like a bride right now. Don’t get me wrong, I love every single moment of this planning process. I just haven’t had that pivotal bridal feeling moment. I imagine I will be one of those who won’t feel that way until my actual wedding day.

Hive, I want to know from every person reading this right now…what makes YOU feel like a bride?

Has it not happened for you yet? If you are already married, when did you first recognize it? Did it not happen until your actual wedding day? Was it something small or big when you first felt like a bride?

No I haven’t had the moment yet either. If it doesn’t hit me sooner, I know it will when I finally grab my dad’s arm before heading down the aisle (or feild in my case). But I sure hope to have that “Bride” moment before then. I know it can’t be forced.

It took me a LONG time to feel like a bride. I think the first time I really felt like a bride was when my veil arrived in the mail - about 2.5 months before our wedding. I put my veil and my shoes on and walked around the house and that was one of the first times I felt the moment everyone talks about!

So far, the only moment I’ve had where I truely felt like a bride, was when I put my dress on for the first time in the store. I turned around, and thought…”I’m a bride!”. But as soon as it came off…I felt like a normal person again. ;) Seriously…I hope there’s more moments like that to come in the next five months!

I don’t think I felt like a bride until our wedding day. I think putting the veil did it for me though, it made me feel so fancy :)

I got that moment at my second fitting. Not my first which was strange, but the second. And then when i got my hair trial done i had another one.

I haven’t really had that moment yet either. Like you, my mind runs a million miles a minute with all of the planning details and I definitely overanalyze things! I don’t think I’ll really feel it until wedding day.

I think people get so caught up in all the planning, we want the day to be nothing less than perfection but we dont take a step back to see the big picture. Maybe that is why you haven’t had that “Ah ha moment”…My “Ah Ha moment” came very early in the planning process. It happened when I went dress shopping…in a matter of 30 seconds I was transformed…dress, shoes, hair piece, veil; the whole kitten kaboodle and with that vuala I “WAS” a bride, “THE” bride. The focus was all on ME! That is when I knew this was really happening…then when I put “THEE DRESS” on…forget it. I couldn’t have been more ecstatic about the rest of what was to come. I hope you find your very own special moment that makes you feel like “the bride”. :-)

Honestly, I’m married and I never had that feel like a bride moment as I can recall. It all felt surreal, but I always felt… normal.

@knvprincess143: Yup, I agree :)
@PitBulLover: I am on the lookout for a vel for me, I have always loved veils…so maybe that will do it :)
@Merelton: haha, normal clothes will do that to a person haha
@Mrs. Pony: Probably because you had a beautiful veil! :)
@PeacocksAndCandy: hmm, maybe that will happen to me too. I haven’t had a fitting yet…but my dress is huge on me, so maybe the alterations will make a big difference.
@MsFoxxy: we need to slow down our brains a little! :)
@alicia1745: you will! we all will!
@Miss Future Milkman: Actually, I am pretty good at savoring the moment and seeing the big picture…even though my brain does get pretty jumbled some times. So that isn’t the issue. It probably won’t happen for me until the big day. It sounds like it happened to you though multiple times, and that is so awesome! Maybe I just need to get my dress altered right and find a veil haha.
@lawschool bride: Hey, maybe some people don’t…and that’s totally fine! I think its probably a good thing you felt normal, nothing wrong with that at all :)

I haven’t had that moment yet either. I felt a glimmer of it when I tried on dresses and had a veil on, but not completely. I’m trying not to get too caught up in planning right now because I have until August 2013 to plan, but I’m sure when the moment for fittings and real planning come I’ll be there (hopefully) :)

I hope you have it, I hope someone is there for you making this a wonderful process. I’ve been the Do’er, the pamperer in all my friend’s weddings, I hope every bride has a friend that can make sure this process is FUN & Exciting. My previous job was a Wedding Planner and I loved it- I kind of fell into the job and I was good at it, but because of this I don’t think I will get the “I’m a Bride” moment until the rehearsal when I let go of everything and just enjoy the weekend of events.

Hi Miss Doe,

I haven’t had that feeling either! I actually just started enjoying the process; it stressed me out a lot at the beginning… probably because 1- My brain also goes a thousand miles a minute and I had other stressful stuff going on which was detracting from my enjoyment of the process, 2- I am a pleaser and I was trying to make everyone else happy and 3- I am a perfectionist. I’ve let all these things go a lot and I’m enjoying the process a bunch more. I haven’t gotten my dress yet, but I am hoping when I do, I will feel that way. I agree with Law School Bride that it does all feel surreal, but also with knvprincess that I will likely feel that way on my dad’s arm going down the aisle.
Truthfully, I love all the shows and pomp and tradition as well, but the thing that is bringing me the most joy is realizing my fiance and I will be officially joining our lives and we have so much to look forward to! I feel sooo grateful because the one thing that has felt perfect and right throughout is being with him. :) I wish the same for every bride.

P.S. Your blog cracks me up; I think we are very similar in some ways!

Putting the dress on made me feel like a bride. It was a bizarre feeling. :)

We have a show in the UK called “Don’t Tell The Bride” where the groom is given GBP 12k and three weeks to organise the wedding from scratch - without seeing, speaking to or being in contact with the bride AT ALL! The first time she sees the dress (that he has chosen for her) is the day before the wedding and the first time they see each other is at the alter!!

I guess these girls don’t get the feeling of being a bride until the day - and in some cases it’s not a nice feeling…!

I hope you guys get the show in the US, it makes for great viewing!

I felt like a bride when I put on a veil for the first time. It was a “this just got real” moment for me. But since then, I haven’t really been struck by it.

i didn’t get that feeling until my hair and make up was done, my dress was on and i started to put on my pearls.

i got super choked up and had to look away from the mirror - it was so overwhelming!

I felt like a bride on my wedding day, the first time I stepped into the church, waiting to see DH for the first time. Seeing everything come together, including family, after a year and a half of planning… *that* made me feel like a bride.

honestly, i don’t think it actually hit me until i put on my veil on my wedding day - i had tried on my dress and accessories numerous times before my wedding day but it wasn’t until i was finally ready to walk down that aisle and looked in the mirror one last time that i really felt like a bride.
