The South has definitely earned a special place in my heart (alongside my Virginia born and bred fiance, of course!). We are planning a traditional Christian ceremony at my alma mater in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, followed by a rocking reception filled with Southern cooking and vintage/shabby chic details. When we’re not wedding planning, we enjoy spending time with our three dogs, going for runs together, watching plenty of football (or baseball depending on the season), and sampling new wine.
About Miss Hawk

CONFESSION: I Am Impatient.

November 10th, 2011 @ 9:15 am by Miss Hawk

(Or Our Road to Engagement)

I can be very impatient. (And Mr. Hawk may think that is a gross understatement!) I mean, I S-U-C-K at waiting when it comes to something I really, really want. While my determination has served me well career-wise, it wasn’t exactly conducive to the whole engagement process.

When Mr. Hawk and I moved in together back in October of 2010, I wanted to make our intentions crystal clear. We decided that if we were going to cohabitate, it was a serious step in making a more permanent future together. I was incredibly happy and excited to be moving forward in our relationship until things didn’t follow the timeline I had somehow developed in my head along the way.

It started innocently enough with a visit from the mister’s Momma, FMIL Hawk, at our new abode. After giving her the tour, we sat down to spend some time together. Almost immediately, she dug into Mr. Hawk. (Both of us coming from somewhat conservative Christian backgrounds, we knew our new living arrangements weren’t exactly hunky-dory in our families’ eyes, but I don’t think either of us was expecting this.) Boy oh boy, did she give it to him. She wanted a date and a ring ASAP to (using her words) “make this right.” (Eek!) At first it was a little uncomfortable for both of us, but it really did open the door for more concrete discussions about where we saw our relationship going. Only a week or so later, we were out ring shopping (and my little heart was soaring with excitement).

But then the waiting game began (DUN DUN DUUNNN). Weeks turned to months and impatience turned into anxiety. At some point anxiety took permanent residence and let his BFF insecurity move in. I started thinking that Mr. Hawk didn’t really want to get married. (I know, I know—it was only a couple months, but I was obsessed!) I mean I picked out the freakin’ ring. What else was there to do?!! What was he waiting for?!!

Looking back at those four months or so, I have some regrets and I’m pretty darn embarrassed. I shouldn’t have wasted time with worry and I surely should have trusted Mr. Hawk’s intentions, because one beautiful and quiet Sunday morning in NYC’s Central Park, Mr. Hawk got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. (And he made me so exceedingly happy that my heart still flutters thinking about those few moments. WORTH.THE.WAIT.)

Was anyone else overcome with anxiety/doubts/insecurities while waiting for a proposal? Or are y’all blessed with a little more patience than me?!

No way, I was like you! My fiance had said for AGES that he’d pop the question, don’t worry, but pretty much up until the ring was on my finger, I figured it wasn’t going to happen.

Oh hells yes! Foxy and I moved in together and I thought he would propose rather soon after that, but it turned into about a year and a half later. We always talked about getting married before we were engaged and it got me SO antsy. Friends and family didn’t really help, since almost every time I saw someone, they would ask if I had a ring yet. I regret some of the things I felt and said during the hardest waiting moments, but the wait was so worth it, like you said!

My fiance used my great-grandmas engagement ring- so I knew he had it (as I had given it to him)…and then I waited and waited. And always joked with him about when he was going to do it. He told me that every time I did that he was pushing the proposal back even more…he said this up until the day before he actually proposed! I felt the same way though! knowing he had the ring made it even worse!

Haha, ohhhhh girl, I was the WORST. I badgered him so much after we moved in together last year that he finally gave me a timeline of “within 6 months” last June. Worst thing he could have ever done! My fault, though. Every birthday, date night, vacation in that 6 month period I was like WHY ISNT HE ASKING. I went through his drawers trying to find a ring. Lame. I have many regrets too… but oh well, he finally did at least :)

Oh I can totally relate! I just got engaged (3 weeks ago) but my fiance told me we’d be engaged by the end of summer, then October, then “soon”. Putting a deadline on it sure makes a girl crazy!

Ahhhh I was SO impatient! My now-fiance told me for every time I badgered him about getting engaged that he was adding a month to my wait LOL Not that he actually did because I actually badgered him about getting engaged on the day he proposed…. IN THE CAR on the way to the college where we met where he wound up proposing. like you said though… TOTALLY worth the wait!!!!

PS… we’re totally engagement date twins! Such a happy day =)

You are so cute! I had a timeline in my head but hid it very well. Thankfully he popped the question long before I flipped out! LOL

Anxiety? Yep. Doubts? Uh huh. Insecurities? Totally. I was with my FI for 8 years (and one month) before he proposed, two of which we were living together. We had talked about marriage often, but I didn’t want to go ring shopping with him, so I had no idea when he would decide to do it. I was SO impatient. But, worth it. :)

Exactly our situation. Our parents wanted him to make the relationship more permanent because I moved several states away to be with him. He and I talked about getting engaged for months, and nothing happened. I was totally convinced we were never getting married and was the only person surprised when he proposed.

Oh my gosh is this post resonating with me! I’m in the waiting period right now, and even though I know he picked out the ring and it’s only been… sheesh, a month??… I’m going nuts with the insecurity! I think your post just inspired me to RELAX, haha!

It’s a relief to read y’all stories. This makes me feel much more normal for being an antsy-pants!

Ugh. I’m pretty bad, too. He’s been dropping huge hints about a ring in my very near future; that only adds fuel to the fire, though, and I end up badgering him about it. I try to stop myself, but I just can’t! I may or may not have already started planning our wedding. Just saying.
