Miss Elk's Picture
Miss Elk, City: Syracuse/Long Island Age and Occupation: 25, Medical Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Computer Engineer Engagement Date: November 22, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: The Old Field Club About Me: I’m a Long Island girl finishing my last year of medical school in western NY, on the road to becoming a pediatrician. When I’m not studying or sleeping at the hospital, I spend my free time watching bad TV (Vampire Diaries anyone?), playing with my pooch, singing incredibly off-key (to the annoyance of Mr. Elk ), and reading Harry Potter for the zillionth time. Mr. Elk and I are planning a secular wedding infused with both Irish and cultural Jewish traditions. Only a week after I become an M.D., I will get my Mrs. degree, too!
About Miss Elk

Another Jewish wedding tradition is the Ketubah. For those of you who do not know, a Ketubah is the Jewish marriage license signed prior to the ceremony. It is usually gorgeous, a la these fab creations:

To me, a Ketbuah has always been a beautiful reminder of a wedding day—something you can hang on a wall and look at every day. Now, a Ketbuah is extremely religious. Most are in Hebrew and talk of God and faith. I realized that while I loved the idea of a Ketubah, I wanted something similar but sans religion, so I began searching for alternatives and found the Quaker Marriage Certificate, like this one:

These provide guests a place to sign their names (not pictured above) as witnesses to our vows and ceremony, which I absolutely love. They are like certificates and guestbooks all in one! I started searching for Quaker-inspired certificates and found these awesome examples:

I absolutely love this idea, and lucky for me my brother is a former graphic designer turned elementary school art teacher, and his girlfriend is super artistic and crafty herself! She sells awesome, unique jewelry at her Etsy store florapamo, like this necklace made of tags from the Metropolitan Museum of Art…

…and these earrings made of shredded magazines:

So I feel pretty lucky that they both agreed to make us our very own Quaker-inspired marriage certificate! I think it is a pretty awesome wedding gift, one that will definitely be treasured for a lifetime, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Do you have talented family members who offered their talents as a wedding gift?

Love this - we ordered a Ketubah from Jennifer Raichman for our Jew-talian wedding, we chose secular wording from her many choices. It was beautiful, and it reflected both of us having different choices and bringing a family together. Can’t wait to see what yours looks like!!

oh man! that met necklace is bananas! I have a million of those hanging around. I should see if I can make that! TOO COOL.
I’m not Jewish, but I had a lot of Jewish friends growing up, and I remember a lot of really beautiful ketubah’s in my friends’ houses. What a gorgeous tradition! and it’s extra special that your bro and his gf are creating a unique one just for you and your hubby. Can’t wait to see what they come up with!

What a cool idea! And now you’ll have something so pretty to put on display in your new home! BTW, that Met necklace is amazing! I think I might have to get one–I collected so many of those pins while living in NYC!

That’s a cool idea. My sister is making us a collage of our favorite sports teams as a wedding gift and surprise for the mister.

Very cool! We’re doing something similar for our “guest book” - I love that you have creative people helping you out, too!

I love the look and idea of a ketubah - I kinda wanted one, but (A) we’re not Jewish, and (B) we’re not religious at all! The Quaker certificate is a great secular version of it.
