Miss Hawk, Richmond, VA Age and Occupation: 26, Finance Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, District Supervisor Engagement Date: March 13, 2011 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: The Chapel of the Sir Christopher Wren Building, 2007 Legacy Hall About Me: I’m an Arizona-born girl who has spent the majority of my life living below the Mason-Dixon line. The South has definitely earned a special place in my heart (alongside my Virginia born and bred fiance, of course!). We are planning a traditional Christian ceremony at my alma mater in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, followed by a rocking reception filled with Southern cooking and vintage/shabby chic details. When we’re not wedding planning, we enjoy spending time with our three dogs, going for runs together, watching plenty of football (or baseball depending on the season), and sampling new wine.

Sticker Shock

November 10th, 2011 @ 1:33 pm by Miss Hawk

Since I’ve come clean with my issue of patience, I’m sure this next confession will hardly come as a surprise… I started planning out details of the wedding (only in my head, I swear!) before I was formally engaged. (I certainly can’t be alone in this, right?) From the very beginning, for whatever reason, there was NO question in my mind about where I wanted to get married. I attended a small public school in Williamsburg, Virginia, and my experiences and memories there stuck with me. Besides the historical aspect, there really isn’t much going on in the ‘burg; however, what it lacks in entertainment, Williamsburg makes up for in beauty. Quiet, quaint, and picturesque are all words that accurately describe the ‘burg. And although these things perhaps aren’t the perfect ingredients for a party school, they certainly do make up the recipe of my ideal wedding locale.

Since I had already planned this aspect out, I was ready to go email-guns blazing once we were engaged. They did make us wait it out on the waiting list for a couple weeks, but luckily, due to my fast moving and pre-planning (see it was helpful!), we were able to have the date and time of our choice! Naturally (and to Mr. Hawk’s dismay) when I received the email confirmation, I immediately started jumping around the house doing some really uncool happy dance moves and grabbed a bottle of champagne to be popped. We had a ceremony spot!

After I had successfully locked in our ceremony location, I was ready to move forward by securing our reception spot. I knew we had limited options having our wedding in a small town like the ‘burg, but I really wasn’t concerned. I figured the perfect reception location would be none other than the W&M Alumni House! It is, like many on-campus buildings, a beautiful, historic brick building (and, even better, it’s located just a few steps away from Wren Chapel). It houses a great spiral staircase and gorgeous ballroom, none of which really mattered since I envisioned the reception outside on the all-brick patio and grass park attached to the building. We were going to have a large white tent with tons of pastel Chinese lanterns. (Romantic, right?)

See, when Mr. Hawk and I developed our wedding budget, it seemed like a BIG number. We were right on par with the cost of the “average American wedding,” and the weddings I’d seen on Style Me Pretty and The Knot were pretty grand affairs. Then I got my reality check. When meeting with our DJ/master of ceremonies/DOC/Superwoman, I told her my vision, and naturally she asked about our budget. Her reaction was not quite what I had expected. She thought my vision was “lovely,” but was I willing to shell out a QUARTER of my entire budget on the reception space? Then Mr. Hawk chimed in. “Yeah, I didn’t understand why we’d pay thousands to rent the building just to have the reception outside in a tent.”

UGH! I was crushed. The word “traitor” might have crossed my mind. Didn’t they see it? This was my DREAM! My VISION!

Well after getting over their mutual squashing of my dreams, I started to see the light. It really didn’t make sense to spend so much money on the reception space. I started to realize all of the things we’d have to cut out with such a large portion of our budget gone. (I mean, it wouldn’t be much of a party if we couldn’t afford to feed anyone…ANYTHING.) Our big budget started to look a little smaller and I had to readjust my expectations.

I actually lucked out in that my fiance is pretty level headed and no-nonsense. He doesn’t get lost in unrealistic visions of grandeur like his daydreaming bride-to-be. I have a feeling this won’t be the last time Mr. Hawk has to bring me back down from the clouds.

During the planning process was there a time you were hit with sticker shock? Did you ever have to readjust your expectations to stay within your budget constraints?

I can totally relate to having the crazy dream (because it would work if….) and then realizing that it’s not even really what I wanted in the first place!

Photography!!! Oh how I hate how expensive it is. This far I have avoided it altogether. Just thinking about it makes me sick.

I pride myself in being able to cut corners but I can’t manage to figure this problem out. It is pure terror for me.

Haha uhhhh, everything? :) Venues and catering by far were the biggest sticker shocks, followed by florists. We lucked out and got an AMAZEBALLS photographer for like a fraction of the cost because she’s just starting out (ugh, she’s FANTASTIC). But initial photography searches… yeah, I did not know how we were going to do that.

I so love Williamsburg that I’m really enjoying reading your planning…. even though I’ve already been married for two years! For shame!

Your venue is so gorgeous, I love it.
I definitely had sticker shock on things, but I also did some ‘research’ before getting engaged, so it was all a complete surprise. :)

More W&M alums?! Go tribe.

I had the same issue. We found a fantastic place that I LOVED, until I realized the cost was half the budget and that was just for renting the space (not catering, etc).

Still, alumni house is beautiful. So is Williamsburg winery-I’ve been to a few weddings there as well.

@MissMargie: Yay! I’m so glad to see other W&M alums at the ‘bee!

@Miss Aardvark: Yes. Exactly!

@knvprincess143: I hear you. It is very difficult to pull the trigger when it comes time to plunk down such a large sum of money!

@Mrs. Ladyfingers: Lucky girl! Every time I move onto a new vendor, it’s eye opening!

@Miss Raccoon: I’m still surprised by cost of things, but Mr. Hawk is in constant shock-mode!

Our ceremony decorations are going to be so much more expensive than I imagined. I was imagining the candle pricing at Kohl’s; clearly there is an upcharge if an arrangement of 10-15 fireplace candles is 150 bucks.

Your tale is such a common one, Miss Hawk, and a lot of us definitely have to adjust our wedding visions to afford the wedding at all. Ultimately, it’s about figuring out what’s important to you, splurging on that, and then cutting back in other areas. Like you, Mr. P and I just couldn’t justify spending spending more than what we did on our venue–but we definitely splurged in other areas!

You’re definitely not alone in secret dream planning in your head! I can’t wait to see what you do for the reception. I’d much rather get a cheaper place and spend the same decorating.

I love Williamsburg and even looked at W&M (I went to Tech). I saw an ad for colonial Williamsburg weddings after we booked everything in NC and kind of got venue envy. You’re super lucky!

Yay WM Alums and Brides to be! Feel free to message me if you all want to share wedding planning details. Especially when it comes to vendors.

Miss Hawk, it seems like we have very similar tastes. I am getting married in Wren in July and having my reception at the Alumni House. I was shocked by the price tag too when I first heard it. I didn’t realize it would be that expensive. I mean we’re alumni right! We actually lucked out and got a pretty steep discount, because they missed our first scheduled appointment. My FI and I drove 6 hours round trip to see the venue and no one was there! I was so angry, but it made the venue affordable after that point so I guess it all worked out.

We are only having about 60 guests, so that is where our cost cutting is coming in. Each person adds so much money!

Did you find another reception venue yet?

@Allison:I feel like this turned into the W&M party!

@Miss Mole: Holy moly. I guess I’d never thought about candles being so pricey!

@Mrs. Parasol: You hit the nail on the head!

@Future Army Wife: Thanks! I think Williamsburg will be a lovely backdrop for the wedding.

@FutureMrsSMW: Lucky girl for getting a discount! (But I’m sure the drive only to not have anyone there was NOT.FUN.) I did find a reception venue! I’ll send you a PM.

@Miss Doe: I did indeed. :)

I feel like I’m hit with sticker shock every time something wedding related pops up! It’s actually the main reason why we are getting married where we are and not somewhere closer to us in DC or at a pretty winery in VA. Things are just so darn expensive!!
