Side-by-Side Hobbies

November 11th, 2011 @ 7:02 am by Mrs. Mole

It’s a banner day in the Mole household: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 was just released. Perhaps you have this box lying around your house as well? You very well might: analysts predict that this game might sell as many as 18 million copies by January 1st.

Mr. Mole has a couple of video games, including Call of Duty, that he loves to play. He can play for hours. I never begrudge him this time, especially since he works for a video game company. (Play more video games, everyone! Especially action RTS games!) I usually just sit on the couch next to him with the laptop or my Kindle.

This got me thinking about the way that we share our hobbies and interests. We have a lot of them in common: trying out new foods, visiting family and friends, going on hikes, reading books, walking our dog. But a lot of our hobbies are done side-by-side, rather than together. We become partners by proximity, not necessarily through activity. Mr. Mole will play Call of Duty while I blog. I will hop on the treadmill while he rides the bike. He will read tech websites while I watch Four Weddings. I will bake while he plays the guitar.

TB and I have side-by-side hobbies too: I read websites, he stares at me.

What hobbies do you and your significant other share? Are your hobbies side-by-side as well?

Great post and so true. We do a lot of things “side by side” even if we are not doing the same thing. Becasue we work opposite schedules it is nice to just be in the same room while we do our own activities.

I’m with you and @knvprincess143. I paint while he plays COD! but opposite schedules means sometimes I fall asleep on the couch while he plays COD. lol

Like you, Mr. Hawk gets his video game/ESPN/Operation Repo time while I do all my blogging/online research. That’s our only side-by-side activity, but we’ve picked up a couple joint hobbies along the way too. We actually joined a flex bowling league but have been slacking off on it lately. We’re pretty horrible, but it’s something fun we can do together!

That box is definitely sitting in my living room right now. We also practice the ’side by side’ hobbies, on occasion I even watch him play CoD or other games just to see what the appeal is. Then when I try to play them it goes so horribly wrong… don’t worry though my husband takes your command to ‘Play more video games’ very seriously and intends to.

Ohhh yes, we definitely have COD (all versions) in the house! I generally blog or do weddingy things while he plays, he’ll read and I”ll do crossword puzzles, that kind of thing. There’s something great about just spending time with each other, even if you’re not always interacting!

We do our hobbies side by side a lot of the time as well!!! I’m glad to see that its not “weird” I have a friend who wants them to do things together constantly! The box isn’t in my house yet though.. My fiance likes to play it on the computer(Thats when we do our hobbies in seperate rooms haha)

Miss Mole neglected to add that she usually provides color commentary while I’m playing video games. Mostly right before I’m about to die & along the lines of “Oh you probably shouldn’t have looked out that window” or “Watch out for…Oh nevermind he got you”

Also, the company I work for is Riot Games and if any of you wedding bee readers play League of Legends let us know in the comments. I’ve got a bunch of free champion skin codes I can give out.

My FH and I have a lot of side-by-side hobbies. But COD isn’t one of them. This is one game that we love to play together. And it’s actually a lot of fun. Usually we play on the same team and compete for the higher score. Once in a while we’ll verse one another. And it’s a lot of fun seeing FH face when I kick is butt at it. =)

You just described our house. Although, Mr. Squirrel’s video game playing has slowed considerably lately. Most nights we hang out together but work on our seperate tasks.

Absolutely the same thing for me! I’m on my iPad while the fiancé plays Call of Duty and Battlefield.

@knvprincess143: That’s such a great strategy if you have opposing schedules! Then you can both unwind and relax with your own hobbies but still share time together.
@vmblai1019: I only play Mario Kart with Mr. Mole. I am so horrible at most other video games that it wouldn’t be fun for anyone. :)
@KimbeeQ: The gunfire doesn’t wake you up? Haha.
@Miss Hawk: Bowling sounds like a lot of fun! I think that sport can be even more enjoyable if you are bad anyway.

@Miss Ticket: I totally understand; I am HORRIBLE at the shooting games. Anyway if your husband wants to get into League of Legends (or if you do!), we’d definitely approve. :)
@jackiet314: I bet your husband was PUMPED about those presents! I keep waiting for a release date to line up with Mr. Mole’s birthday, but he preorders the games beforehand.
@Miss Fox: I agree! That reminds me: crossword puzzles are another hobby that we sometimes do together, especially on airplanes!
@Rebecca: I agree. I love to spend time with Mr. Mole — but that doesn’t mean that we need to be doing the exact same thing! For example, he sometimes humors me by watching SYTTD, but I’d rather he spent his free time doing something he actually enjoys. :)

@jeffexpress: HELLLOOOOOOOOO Mr. Mole! So glad to see you make your first appearance — on a video game thread.
@Miss Motocross: Haha! Good for you! Let me know your secrets. I’ve played a couple of times and only got one kill (which was purely by accident).
@SunnySquirrel: Mr. Mole goes through periods too. For the first year of our relationship, in fact, he didn’t play any games at all! I was tricked, I tell ya. ;)
@PrincessPeeps: Looks like we COD widows are keeping ourselves busy. :)

FallOut New Vegas came out while my fiance was on block leave before he deployed. I guess our side-by-side hobby was me sitting next to him? Haha. @ Mr Mole, I also provide color commentary.

@Future Army Wife: Haha! I’m glad to know I’m not the only one. (I am currently resisting the urge to do so right now. Mr. Mole is getting shot!)

I am currently watching Harry Potter, which my fiance is playing games on his computer (where he has been for the last 3 hours!) Works out well for both of us….especially when there are marathons of Say Yes to the Dress! :)
