After the amazing first part of our honeymoon in Maui, we flew back to Honolulu which is where we had to fly home from. We stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki right on the beach and had a beautiful view over Diamond Head and across the town and out onto the ocean.
It was quite the change of pace going from being in an incredibly secluded resort to the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. To say the least, we wanted to high-tail it right back to Maui quick smart.
However, there were some little friends down there that we noticed very quickly and weren’t actually sure what we had seen. I spent hours on the balcony sitting there just watching up to 5 turtles swimming around just past all the swimmers who were completely oblivious! More about them later, though.
We only had 4 days in Waikiki and one of those was spent travelling around the island. We had done this when we were last in Hawai’i and had such a great day so we thought, why not do it again? So crack of 7am, we walked up to our hire car venue to get an early start and headed straight to Pearl Harbour to go out to see the USS Arizona:
Then, things got dangerous. We went outlet shopping. Correction—we went outlet shopping when the Aussie dollar was higher than the US dollar. This was dangerous, very dangerous! Although, I think we did quite well in restraining ourselves.
After we had purchased some towels, we headed straight up the middle of the island and went for the North Shore, and more specifically—lunch of garlic prawns. This was quite possibly the best food ever—a bowl of steamed rice and more garlic than should be legal (don’t worry, we both had a plate so we thought we smelled great). I think I was way too excited for this lunch.
Then we backtracked around and headed for the beach to hopefully spot a few more turtles. We had seen a lot of them last time at a little beach just as you arrive at the North Shore where there are volunteers who protect the little (and not so little) guys when they pop up to the beach for a nap. We were in luck—there were two turtles napping!
We also cooled off with a swim and snapped a little happy honeymoon pic.
Now, back to the turtles outside our hotel. On our last day, we went out a little further than the other swimmers and were wondering if we would be able to see a turtle, when two seconds later a giant head popped up about 2 metres (6 feet) away! It was definitely a highlight of the trip! Of course, that, and discovering cake mix ice cream at Cold Stone:
Oh wow, I really just want to be on our honeymoon again. It was such an amazing holiday being giddy with excitement, being newly married, and enjoying such a relaxing time together.
Will you head to Hawaii for your honeymoon? What are you looking forward to the most?
