Dress Shopping: The Rejects Round 3

November 11th, 2011 @ 7:37 am by Miss Elk

When I started dress shopping, there was one brand that stood out above all the others: Watters. I was beyond convinced that my dress was going to end up being one of their creations, which are filled with lace, three-dimensional floral details, and all things pretty. Unfortunately, of the eight salons I had managed to shop in, only two carried the brand. And of those two salons, they each only had one Watters sample. BAHHH. I was not a happy camper. I decided I had to go to a store that carried most of the line, and so I traveled an hour and a half away to another city in search of my beautiful Watters dresses. Before I tried them on, these were some of the clear contenders.

(Note: all dress images from Watters)

Dallas: Loved the V neckline, loved the lace and floral detailing!

Mojave: you can’t see it very well, but the fabric of this dress has a rose design on it and it is BEAUTIFUL!

Austin: So light, floaty, and ethereal looking!

Sonara: my favorite by far going into dress shopping! The shape is to die for, and the floral detailing is just enough to give it some texture.

As you can tell by the title of this post, things did not turn out as expected.

The first Watters gown I tried on was Lasara. I think it’s gorgeous, but I didn’t feel like a bride. I also thought it hit my hips at a weird spot. My mom totally wanted me to get this dress, though.

Desdemona: again, I thought this dress hit my hips at a really weird place. I also felt like a little girl and not very bride-y.

Austin: I REALLY wanted to love this dress. I stood in it for a long time, looking at myself over and over again. In the end I realized I wasn’t feeling sexy at all, and the skirt is quite a lot of fabric to carry around. When I ruled this dress out, I made the decision that my dress would definitely be fitted.

And what of my most beloved Sonara? Well, I did get to try her on, and I HATED her on me. I had lusted over this dress for months, and was more than disappointed when she was actually on my body. I didn’t take a picture because it was just so bad, and I couldn’t get out of the dress fast enough!

Were you wrong with your initial dress picks or did you get it right from the start?

I went shopping with one dress in mind. After many dresses the associate thought was right for me, I asked where is the one with the bow on it. It’s next she answeres. Many nexts later I got to try on my bow dress and wouldn’t you know it, that was it.

A lot of the dresses you didn’t like are A-line with a cumberband. Did you buy your dress yet? I can’t wait to see what you picked!

I went to try on dresses with only 1 dress in mind. I was 100% sure it was going to be my dress. Well- long story short- I ended up buying a completely different dress.

I was totally wrong! I though I’d love ALLURE because soo many of their dresses I saw in magazines were just like I wanted. However in person I was a little disappointed with the quality and felt more like I was trying on prom dresses.

I ended up splurging for a higher end brand and went with Enzoani. As soon as I tried on the dress it looked and felt just as I imagined a bridal gown would be. I guess you really don’t know what you want until you try!

I’m wearing Austin next weekend for my wedding!! I was set on a big ball gown, so it is perfect for me. I agree that the fitted dresses look great on you. Good luck!

I was THIS close to being a Mojave bride. I also thought I would LOVE the Austin and it was heavy and I felt really hot in it just trying it on.

I ended up going with the dress I had my eye on since before I was even engaged - Maggie Sottero’s Autumn. I had a brief love affair with something that was the complete opposite, but went back to Autumn in the end!

Some of my favorites were Watters gowns, including Austin. They didn’t have Mojave when I was looking or else I would have tried it on - the detailing on the skirt is pretty!

wow I could have written this!! I loved watters so much, just not on me. Dallas was my fave, just way too low cut.

I loooooooove Watters, but may just be biased because Lasara was my wedding dress. ;) You can’t beat Watters for quality, my wardrobe friend who did my alterations still raves to me at work about the sheer amount of quality and detail that went into that dress - not the embroidery on top, but the detail in all the underlayers that only she would see!

I tried and tried to find Desdemona to compare before I bought, but the shop had lost the sample or something.
