Miss Elk's Picture
Miss Elk, City: Syracuse/Long Island Age and Occupation: 25, Medical Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Computer Engineer Engagement Date: November 22, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: The Old Field Club About Me: I’m a Long Island girl finishing my last year of medical school in western NY, on the road to becoming a pediatrician. When I’m not studying or sleeping at the hospital, I spend my free time watching bad TV (Vampire Diaries anyone?), playing with my pooch, singing incredibly off-key (to the annoyance of Mr. Elk ), and reading Harry Potter for the zillionth time. Mr. Elk and I are planning a secular wedding infused with both Irish and cultural Jewish traditions. Only a week after I become an M.D., I will get my Mrs. degree, too!
About Miss Elk

A few years ago I stumbled upon a wedding featured on Style Me Pretty that made me gasp out loud. Although this was well over a year before our engagement, the wedding has always stuck with me as one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. It was beyond simple, and some of the photos of the bride and groom were taken in front of a gorgeous old weeping willow:

Soon after, pictures of crystal chandeliers dangling from the larger branches of trees started surfacing all over the interwebs, and once again I couldn’t help but swoon! I love the idea of the simplicity of nature starkly contrasted with the formality of a chandelier. I think it helps bring a unique, formal feel to an outdoor space without making it feel too overdone or showy, and I think it makes a gorgeous backdrop for an outdoor ceremony.

Unfortunately, while our venue met every other criteria I had set forth, there is not a single tree in the vicinity surrounding the ceremony site. BOO! I guess I need to come with another way to bring a bit of a formal feel to the outdoor space…but I think I may have just the solution! Just a couple kinks to work out before I unveil my plan for the ceremony space.

Were you a wedding stalker well before you got engaged? And what do you think of the tree/chandelier look?

I love the look. Lucky for us we live on a pretty good sized piece of land, one side of which as about 10 large trees lined up at either end. We are not using a chandlier, but we are going to hang lanterns and mason jars with tea lights from the branches. We are getting married Ay 19, 2012 at 6pm, so hopefully the lantern and candle lights will look really soft and romantic.

I read everything I possibly could about weddings, I loved weddings, I loved helping my friends with their weddings, helping my friends family and their friends. Anything I could do to make it special for them, make it unique and just theirs - I was that gal. In fact, after years int he medical field I became a Wedding Coordinator, and I loved it. Then, my engagement happened.. eek. I was just like everyone else. Head spinning and mushed Brain from all the details. I never thought I would be getting married, and if by chance it would never be a big event. Then, my Fiance… he wants a big wedding, he wants all his friends, his family, and That Kind of Event. So, he is getting it. In my eyes it is all about him, and that is how it should be, because every other day of our lives he makes it all about me.

I grew up around the Old Field Club and first it’s a great choice! But if you have any time, or are taking pictures before the wedding I have two great ideas for tree locations within 5 minutes of your venue. 1. The Setauket duck pond. There are huge old trees, stone bridges and even a water mill. 2. Stony Brook Village, it’s across from the wetlands and theres a small pond and lots of old trees.

Hope this helps!

Don’t worry, you’re not alone - I am a total wedding stalker. Still a few months until I get engaged, but I’ve been looking at wedding blogs, magazines, etc. for a year or two now!

Totally in love with looking at other people’s weddings. So fun!

I’ve never seen a tree chandelier, but I totally agree. It took my breath away- so romantic and so beautiful. I also think tons of lanterns in trees are beautiful too.

I’m super excited about getting married in front of a beautiful maple tree - I love the chandelier look but not sure if we can make it work for ours - will definitely have to look into it though - if not, I’d like to string some crystal garlands from the tree, though. The great thing about getting married on a golf course is that they have radar on site which will let us know 30 minutes before the wedding whether or not we’ll have rain - our venue told us they didn’t have one “rain-out” for any weddings this year so I hope that carries on in 2012!

I agree, I absolutely love how a chandelier adds a touch of elegance to the simple beauty of nature. You said it well! I have an outdoor ceremony and seriously thinking of adding a chandelier (or two!).
