Miss Hawk's Picture
Miss Hawk, Richmond, VA Age and Occupation: 26, Finance Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, District Supervisor Engagement Date: March 13, 2011 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: The Chapel of the Sir Christopher Wren Building, 2007 Legacy Hall About Me: I’m an Arizona-born girl who has spent the majority of my life living below the Mason-Dixon line. The South has definitely earned a special place in my heart (alongside my Virginia born and bred fiance, of course!). We are planning a traditional Christian ceremony at my alma mater in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, followed by a rocking reception filled with Southern cooking and vintage/shabby chic details. When we’re not wedding planning, we enjoy spending time with our three dogs, going for runs together, watching plenty of football (or baseball depending on the season), and sampling new wine.
About Miss Hawk

Dinner, Discussions & Decisions

November 14th, 2011 @ 12:26 pm by Miss Hawk

Throughout the whole planning process, Mr. Hawk has been pretty darn laid back. (Thank God at least one of us is as cool as a cucumber!) Besides the occasional, “Do you really need that?” or “Um, I thought we were thinking of ways to save money?” he’s happily let me take the reins and be little miss type-A. But when it came to discussing the food, it was a bit of a different story. I am obviously madly in love Mr. Hawk, but sometimes his obsession with all things food (well, mainly pork) kills me.

When we started discussing menu ideas, we knew we didn’t necessarily want to go the traditional reception route of a steak dish, a chicken dish, and veggies. We threw some ideas around and landed on serving Southern-style comfort food. It fit our location and us as a couple. (Plus, who doesn’t enjoy gourmet mac and cheese?!) I was thinking Virginia ham, biscuits and corn bread, and some Southern-style veggies (all perhaps with a little elegant twist). Mr. Hawk heard Southern and thought “PULLED PORK!” I think a lot of men have an obsession with all things pork that us women may never understand, but this was ridiculous. (We weren’t discussing what to eat for your average Saturday night dinner here!) I just didn’t see having pulled pork sandwiches as being as elegant as I wanted for our evening reception. Apparently it was all Mr. Hawk could see. (Sigh.)

I went about the process of requesting quotes and having consultations with several Williamsburg caterers, all the while with the nagging pork issue in the back of my mind. (I mean, it was the ONE thing he actually cared about. It didn’t feel right to just ignore his request, but it also needed to fit with our reception style.) When we finally agreed on our selection, Williamsburg Catering Company, there was one tiny issue. The menu they offered had all the things I was looking for, but lacked a little something Mr. Hawk was obsessing over. Luckily they were very accommodating and willing to work with special requests. Did they make pulled pork? Of course! Could they do it as a slider that we could use as one of the passed hors d’ourves? Yes, they sure could. (Victory!) So I got my classed-up Southern comfort foods, and Mr. Hawk got his pulled pork. (Well, only if those tasty sliders aren’t completely gone by the time we get to cocktail hour!)

Was there a time your groom was suddenly more vocal about a decision? Did he want to participate in the food selections?

My FI has been pretty laid back and when it comes to the food, it is all him anyway. His work is catering it so I told him to take that on, planning the menu and all. I trust him, I think, I hope I can trust him enough to keep the pigs out of it. Oh no, I better chat with him. Now you got me thinking, he might decide ribs are a good idea.

The Snow Cones looooooove themselves some pulled pork, so we did little pulled pork crostinis during cocktail hour. They were a huge hit!

I love this we are most likely going to have some pulled pork as well. Not sure quite how to class it up yet. I like the sliders Idea though!

We’re planning on doing a pulled pork slider for our wedding. They’re delicious and can still be elegant!

@knvprincess143: Haha. Mr. Hawk also suggested ribs! Are they tasty? Of course, but can you imagine eating ribs with dripping BBQ sauce on your wedding dress? The thought makes me all anxious! ;)

@Mrs. Snow Cone: Yum. Pulled pork crostinis sound delish!

@Miss Aardvark: Another company I talked to also suggested pulled pork shooters with a mini jalepeno cornbread that sounded amazing.

Why are guys obsessed with pork? I don’t eat any ham/pork so I really don’t understand it, but we had it at our wedding to please the menfolk. :)

Its the other white meat! we have some very suggestive ads for Pork in Australia - particularly surrounding “porking” your hubby!

That’s a great way to have it incorporated!
I don’t get the guy and pork thing either. Mr. Raccoon and his friends are all about bacon.

I live in the land of barbecue and am having a barn wedding and outdoor reception. Obviously we’re having pulled pork for the reception (and by a place that made Anthony Bourdain’s list of 13 places to eat before you die!). A lot of people are coming in from out of town, and it only feels right to serve the hometown favorite.

Ahaha, I championed the idea of having a BBQ reception for the express reason of having pulled pork sandwiches. I somehow became obsessed with them and luckily the mister is down. He, however, is adamant about NOT having baked beans. Not sure how to even begin to process that request.

I’m not worrying about “classing” them up. They’ll be on a fancy plate and a tablecloth. That’s fancy in and of itself.

The pulled pork slider sounds like a great compromise! I have to admit, we were thisclose to doing a full on BBQ style reception.. maybe not the most classy thing in the world, but it would have been delicious to boot!! Foxy shares with Mr. H the love of pork.. the summer we got to go to not one but TWO pig roasts? Oh my gosh, the man was in heaven!

I wish our caterer did Southern comfort food. I would prefer fried chicken and pulled pork sandwiches to a standard plated chicken breast or steak. And food is only the fiance’s “must make the decision” list along with cake.

We won’t have our tasting until February but Mr. Buck is definitely ready for that! He surprises me with little things here and there that he is interested in. It’s so funny the things guys say and do sometimes when it comes to weddings :)

We are also doing southern comfort food! We haven’t picked a specific menu yet, but my guess is that Mr. D’s vote will be for pulled pork too.

The only thing my fiance has helped with is the planning of the rehearsal dinner. Guess what we’re having… pulled pork…

Our menu will be pulled pork barbecue, chicken cordon bleu, baked and sweet potatoes, corn pudding, glazed carrots, etc…. A good southern meal :-) Nothing wrong with comfort food on your big day! PS: I’m from RVA too :-D
