The Story of My Dress

November 15th, 2011 @ 7:36 am by Miss Elk

One day, a girl and her fiance went to run some errands. While driving out of the shopping center, the girl saw something out of the corner of her eye that made her squeal with delight. A bridal salon she had never before noticed! She quickly called and made an appointment for later that week (AKA the next day).

When she walked into the bridal salon for her appointment, though, she became disappointed. There were only 20 or so bridal dresses in the entire store, and none of them looked anything like the style this girl was looking for. While all of her instincts said to leave, the girl felt bad and so she talked to the consultant. She explained that she wanted a fitted dress, preferably one with lace, tulle, petals, flowers, etc. The consultant said she knew just the dress but it was already in a fitting room. She took it out and it was just a plain lace dress, limply dangling on its hanger with odd straps. The girl was disappointed. She didn’t really like it very much, but decided she would be polite and try it on.

Once the dress was on, the girl looked up into the mirror and…SPARKS FLEW! The girl did not want to take off the dress! She looked at it from every angle, confused. This was not what the girl had wanted—there were no ruffles, no petals, no rosettes, none of the features of the girl’s dream dress. But the girl quickly realized all of the dresses she had tried before that had had those details never seemed right. They were all too childish or too trendy or too overbearing and, simply put, too much. This dress, though, was simple, understated, elegant, and classic. The girl realized that the other dresses she loved so much on models she would have looked back in five years and wondered, “What was I thinking?” but this dress, even if it became outdated, would always be stylish.

And that, my friends, is the story of how I found my dress. Want to see her? (personal photos)

I love your dress! It looks great on you!

I thought I wanted a chiffon dress with delicate beading, but everytime I tried on dresses like that, they just weren’t doing it for me. I ended up going with a taffeta dress with no embellishments except for a flower on the hip. I never would have thought I would end up with something like that, but now I’m free to play with my real love — accessories! Jewelry would have been overwhelming on the dresses I originally had in mind.

OMGoodness, the evolution from my original dream gown to the one I bought resembles Darwin’s theory. They are completely different. I wanted a pink princess gown (I carried a picture around of it for 3 years), then I wanted a white gown with a pink crinoline (I was planning to dye myself) and the one I bought is white with and the crinoline is built in, can’t dye that. I guess I’ll just have to accessorize in pink.

@knvprincess143: I still kind of wish I ordered my dress with a pink underlining so it showed through the lace….Oh well…. I’m sure your dress is stunning even without the pink

That dress is gorgeous! you look amazing!!

I always thought I wanted lots of embellishments and sparkle- but my dress has none of that. I am adding a flower on the hip with a tiny bit of sparkle, but definitely not what I was expecting to love!

Gorgoeus! It looks just like the gown a girl I know wore at her wedding (I wasn’t there, but I saw on Facebook of course). I tried on a Legends gown and loved it - the designs are beautiful!

Your dress is beautiful - and you are right, you will look back years to come and still think it was beautiful and won’t have to say “Well it was the style back then”

I was shocked at my dress choice also. Small boutique and they didn’t have the dress I had been drooling over, I was so upset because I had been misinformed that they had something similar. :-(
I stayed and tried on several gowns all so disappointing - I couldn’t wait to get them off. then comes this plain dress, straight bodice with a little flare and ruffle - eek and a train. But as I walked in that gown I didn’t see me in that mirror I saw my wonderful man standing in Uniform smiling at me as I walked down the aisle. This was the dress he will love to see me in.

I had somewhat of a similar experience…I love-loved-loved the simplicity and class of Mikella (sp?) dresses prior to going shopping and I had convinced myself I would NOT be getting a dress with much in the way of beading, lace, tulle, flowers, etc. I wanted simple satin or silk dress with maybe a nice rhinestone belt. But when the consultant brought out the dress I thought would be mine I absolutely HATED the way I looked in it. In the end I ended up with a dress that had plenty of all the things I hadn’t wanted (lace, beading, flowers) and though I feel silly for being so closed-minded in the beginning, I’m glad I took the consultant’s advice and tried something I thought I wouldn’t like. It turned out to be the best decision EVAR (besides marrying my husband, of course!).
