Officially Hitched: Our First Dance

November 15th, 2011 @ 1:20 pm by Mrs. Frog

So you know how you look through recaps and think—wow, their wedding was clearly perfect. Yeah…I’m about to blow that thought right out of the water.

And to be fully honest, I’ve been dreading this part. It’s the one moment during our wedding that made me sad…and humiliated…and a lot of other emotions that I’m not sure I have the words for.

Okay, like a Band-Aid.

So after we enjoyed our delicious mini-pies, it was time for our first dance. As I’m sure all of you know, this is the point when typically the DJ introduces the couple under their new married name and invites everyone to watch as they have their moment on the dance floor. This is the time when everyone stops what they are doing, turns toward us and listens as the DJ begins to speak.

To make sure everyone is up-to-speed, my name is Melanie (as seen on our pie flags…I’m not worried about you all knowing my name). :) Please keep in mind my name when reading the next part.

As I’m standing there, holding my new husband’s hand and loving life more than I thought possible…the DJ says “And now, if I can have everyone’s attention. The bride and groom will have their first dance as husband and wife. I’m pleased to announce Frogger and Melissa NewLastName.”

Yes, you read that correctly—he called me Melissa. Melissa NewLastName.

There was an audible gasp that swept through the entire group as all eyes were on us. It was humiliating and embarrassing and I literally wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear. I realize this sounds a bit dramatic but honestly, I had been waiting to hear this introduction and to be announced with a completely different name, it was like I was just hit by a MACK truck.

The situation was made worse by the reactions all around us. Some looked on in shock, others yelled out my actual name and well, there were even a couple of chuckles. I don’t hold it against anyone…well, anyone except the DJ.

After hearing my actual name being yelled out, the DJ corrected himself and immediately played our first dance song to help move things along. At the time, as a defense mechanism, I pretended to not even hear it - looking around at people saying, “what? what happened?” but yeah, I heard it loud and clear and yeah, it cut pretty deep.

At that point, Frogger was leading me out to the dance floor and my options were to stand there and have a meltdown or take the moment in stride and focus on what mattered - that moment I was going to have my first dance with my husband. I chose the latter.

Once I made the decision to live in that moment with him and soak up our first dance, I felt so much better in his arms, listening to the song and allowing myself to let it go. Looking back through those pictures, I’m so glad I made that conscious choice. I’ll never get to change the outcome of that moment but I did get to change my reaction and even now, I have to remind myself of that. While writing this, I’m still a bit torn up about it but I know that it’s a very small thing to have gone wrong in the big scheme and I couldn’t feel more lucky to have had so many of the moments before and after go so well.

Thank you all for making me feel comfortable enough to share this humiliating moment with you. I could have easily brushed past it but after sharing my journey with you and all of my trials and tribulations, I feel like it’s only right to share everything with you.

Gosh Froggy, you are so beautiful! You would never have known from these pictures that anything had just happened! Thank you for having the courage to write about your experience here, it helps us keep it real here in the hive. Your DJ is a jerk, and I’m so happy that you were able to choose to move on.

Aw, hun. I am so sorry your DJ got the wrong name :( Kudos for choosing to enjoy your first dance despite that though. You look so beautiful and graceful.

Ack! What is with people and getting mixed up with “M” names. Happens to me all the time. Sorry!
You looked so beautiful and I love the photos of your first dance!

First off, you look AMAZING. Second, major props for being strong and not letting the mess up ruin your first dance. I can definitely understand why you were upset by it, that was pretty awful on his part, but at least you were able to make so many more beautiful memories to outweigh that not-so-good one. Thank you for sharing.
P.S. I was totally with you on the defense mechanism of pretending you didn’t know what was going on, I can totally see myself doing that.

Oh no he didn’t. I hope he apologized profusely for his huge mistake. You’d never be able to tell from your first dance pictures that something terrible had just happened, you look absolutely beautiful.

Aww, Frog! I’m so sorry that happened; I imagine how frustrating and embarrassing that was. But you know what? Everyone at the wedding that mattered (ie not the DJ) knew your name :) I’m glad you were able to enjoy the moment with your new hubs, and I hope (someday!!) you can look back on that and laugh (and maybe still cringe, but hopefully mostly laugh).

You looked beautiful!

It sounds like you handled it well. You’d certainly never know anything was wrong from your pictures! My friends recently got married and the officiant, who was actually the bride’s uncle, called her Brook instead of Britney during the ceremony! It was pretty embarassing for them both, but they laughed it off. These things happen. :)

Thank you so much for sharing! It’s true everyone’s recaps look so perfect all the time (and if I hadn’t read yours I would totally think it had gone perfectly too because those pictures are stunning!) It’s good to hear about hiccups and how to handle them with grace!

As a side note I would blame “Melissa Newlastname” when things go awry from now on.

Wow, I don’t think I could have reacted that gracefully. I probably would have called the DJ out on it, cried, laughed, or possibly some combination of all three.

I’m sure there were a lot of guests embarrassed for you too! I was at a wedding this summer and the minister who married the couple got the groom’s name wrong in the prayer before the meal (and when I say wrong, she used Kevin instead of Matthew!). I just cringed in my seat afterwards because I was so embarrassed for the poor couple. The minister didn’t even realize her mistake; the groom’s sister got up after the prayer and made the correction.

And you did look AMAZING, Froggie! I love your choice to soak up the moment!

Yikes! I’ve heard lots of awful DJ stories! Our friends just got married, and first of all their DJ announced the “K-Toss Bouquet Toss” (he is DJ K-Toss), and then asked all the single ladies and “unhappily married” ladies to join in. My poor friend was mortified! Even worse though, was that brought an assistant who he failed to mention previously (and was not in their contract), who they had to feed, and who had triple-shots of alcohol drinks all night from their open bar! Guess who we decided NOT to pick for our wedding?! yeesh

AH I am so sorry! I am actually pretty concerned about this myself, as Mr Elk’s name (Niall) is not common and most people for whatever reason love to add an s and make it Niles (thanks, Frasier!). I know it sucked in the moment, but your reaction is what counts, and those photos are GORGEOUS! like you look amazing.

I feel your pain as I had a similar experience at my wedding for our official announcement. My husband and I were waiting to walk into our reception and we hear the DJ announce: “Mr and Mrs HisFirst & MyFirst MyLastname” This was a big surprise since not only was I taking my husband’s last name, but he definitely was not taking mine. The crowd’s reaction was instantaneous and while we laughed it off at the time, it definitely irked me.

My sister got married two years later and hired the same DJ - you can be sure he got it right for her!

BEAUTIFUL first dance photos! It looks like nothing was even on your mind except for that moment :) You must be one classy lady to handle it as well as you did and I sure hope the DJ apologized to you guys after!!

ugh - just awful. Our band leader messed up my parents’ introduction. They just stood there until he read the friggin script to get it right. So disrespectful to my parents - the HOSTS. A lack of preparation and effort. Scripts were shared well in advance and printed copies were given to everyone in the band at the event. No excuse for getting that wrong.

There were additional mess-ups by the band leader after that and it felt like my reception was going to fall apart. It finally got back on track…I just can’t believe the lack of effort and professionalism…to just follow the script and timeline…

I’m sorry there was a slip of the tongue and it caused you hurt and embarrassment. Seriously though, that will be one of those cute little stories in a few years that everyone will laugh about, including you.

At my sister’s wedding, her husband was called the wrong name twice during the ceremony - once during the vows and once at the end when they were officially announced a married couple. Granted, the name he was called was the name of a cousin who married a girl with the same name as my sister (hence we were all used to hearing Sister’s Name and Cousin’s Name linked together) but it was still a bit awkward. We all laughed it off though as ultimately, it was one of those things that you could let bother you or laugh at - we all chose the latter, including my sister and her husband.

I hope that as time goes by, you can forget the hurt and embarrassment that arose from that moment and laugh it off as one of those memorable things that just happens sometimes.

Thank you all so much for all of the sweet and supportive words.

Many of you asked if the DJ had apologized…sadly, he didn’t apologize at the wedding and this was one of many issues he caused that day. Needless to say, I won’t be recommending him to others. :)

And like many of you mentioned, I can only hope that in the years to come, I will be able to look back and laugh about this…Thanks again to all of you, it’s made me feel so much better to read your supportive comments.
