Miss Kettle's Picture
Miss Kettle, Chicago, IL Age and Occupation: 26, Non-Profit Donor Resource Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Musician & Teacher Engagement Date: May 29, 2011 Wedding Date: February 2012 Venue: Patrick C. Haley Mansion, Joliet, IL About Me: I'm a city girl who loves a good escape, so I'm planning a Chicago wedding outside of the city. I've been described as a quirky yet down-to-earth drama queen who loves fiercely. I used to be a scientist, but now I'm learning to navigate the world of non-profit organizations. I love cooking, blogging, shopping, and music, and movies (Hans Zimmer is my favorite movie composer). Mr. Kettle and I had a short courtship and now we have a happy home with our cat-who-thinks-she's-people, Belle. We spend our days and nights with good food, live music, video games, family, and friends. Our wedding has become this wonderful excuse to bring together hundreds of people we can't bear to be without.
About Miss Kettle

I wrote a post about our thoughts on our honeymoon way back in September. Why is it that when you’re planning a wedding, anything more than two weeks ago feels like it was way back when?

We were thinking Mardi Gras and we were thinking Hawaii. Well, after checking some prices online, we were re-thinking everything. Mardi Gras was do-able, but Hawaii was out. This being the one part of the wedding Mr. Kettle and I were footing the bill for, we couldn’t spend up all our money or we’d be living off of wedding gift cards and love for a few months post-wedding.

I don’t exactly remember how the idea originiated, but it was inspired by my idea to spend part of my honeymoon celebrating Mardi Gras. There are Carnival celebrations all around the globe at different points of the year.

What’s Carnival you say? Glad you asked.

Carnival, like Mardi Gras, is more about Jesus than the outfits and methods of celebration would suggest. Mardi Gras kicks off Lent literally the day before Ash Wednesday. Carnival kicks it off usually right before that, though some places don’t celebrate until July or even August. Parades, costumes, and general merriment ensue.

I’m a Christian and a bit of a hedonist, so celebrating both Carnival and Mardi Gras before I observe Lent is right up my alley.

I did some research and it turns out there are a couple of places that hold their Carnival celebrations right smack in the middle of our honeymoon. The biggest and best celebration, in Rio de Janeiro, was also during this time.

A quick search revealed every hotel in the city is already sold out. Losing. Aruba is too expensive. This went on and on until we were almost out of options. Then my grandfather came to town to renew his driver’s license and hear Mr. Kettle play his saxophone for one of his gigs. He mentioned Panama.

I did some research. Panama was relatively affordable. Panama was fun. Panama fit the idea of us on a beach being all romantic. It’s not an island, but being this small country at the southern tip of Central America was pretty close.

So here’s where it gets complicated.

Trying to fly to Panama on the 13th, stay in a hotel there, fly to New Orleans on the 20th, stay in a hotel there, and fly back to Chicago on the 22nd is no small task. If we go through Expedia, it will be thousands of dollars. Thousands. No thank you.

Trying to book the trip through American Express is no easy option either. Being a cardholder means we get a much cheaper trip, but it also means we have to navigate their planning services. they don’t have a way to book a trip that covers a multi-destination flight plus a hotel in each location.

But they do have travel agents. I found one in Chicago who specializes in Central America trips. I’m hoping to contact the office next week and pray they can help us. If we can book through American Express, we’ll save around $1000. For us Kettles, that’s no small drop in the bucket. That’s pretty much the entirety of what it will cost us the next time we move. Or it’s the cost to fully repair Mr. Kettle’s saxophone. Basically, there’s a lot we could do with that money.

Hive, cross your fingers for me that this works out. We finally sorted out our dream honeymoon. We just have to untangle how to make the reservations work.

Did you have a specific idea for your honeymoon that seems hard to work into your budget? Where do you want to go, and what resources are you using to make your trip more affordable?

We used a travel agent to help coordinate our honeymoon and can’t IMAGINE doing it any other way. They know all the ins and outs of flights, hotels, etc. and can help set up transfers that I wouldn’t even know existed before. I am guessing you will love this decision! I have heard good things about Panama.

This may be helpful or not. So please know that I’m saying this with LOVE.

I lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil for a bit. I left right before Carnival. The locals all warned that Carnival was a very dangerous time to be in the city. They said they usually would go on vacation outside of the city just to get away from it.

They did say that smaller towns would celebrate and that it would be much better to be there than in the big cities.

They seemed pretty worried about my safety.

Just putting that out there. I didn’t experience it myself so I’m def not an expert.

Good luck!!!

Theres this GREAT hotel in the French Quarter, I’m talking like, 3 blocks away from Burbon St. and it was only $60 bucks a night, which you can’t beat in NOLA. It used to be a jazz museum, has two really intimate swimming pools, and did I mention how close it is to Burbon St???

Its called the Hotel St. Pierre, and is really worth a look if your trying to do NOLA for as cheap as possible, but also with style.

Miss Kettle! I could probably write a book on visiting Panama and going to one of their Carnival celebrations. I really hope you’re able to figure things out. It’s totally worth it!

I’m with Icetea on this. I used to live in Brazil, and knew better than to bother with Carnaval in Rio. Too much crime and chaos for a relaxing holiday. Also, the carnaval procession itself is held within the stadium, for which the tickets are astronomical. It’s not even on the street, where you can party with them. Balls to that.

If you want an authentic Carnaval experience though, Salvador, in the North East of Brazil, is awesome. It’s the best and most authentic carnaval in Brazil - maybe the world. Now that would be an amazing honeymoon: utterly exquisite beaches (especially if you stay just North of the city); carnaval where you can dance alongside the floats; a beautiful historical city with an earthy, sensuous, hedonistic, tropical culture - what could be better? Go straight there, hang out for at least a week, and forget about New Orleans.

(Side note: even though Salvador’s not as bad as Rio, I would suggest not to wear any jewellry when you’re there…)
