Pearls and Tears? Wedding Superstitions

November 16th, 2011 @ 8:29 am by Mrs. Mole

In some cultures, pearls are said to represent tears. As such, brides are cautioned against wearing them on their wedding days so that they do not begin their new lives with sorrow. Interestingly enough, there is also a counter superstition: pearls take the place of a bride’s real tears, thus eliminating any sadness and leading to a joyful marriage.

If the latter superstition is true, I am going to be one happy wife. (We won’t talk about the implications of the former!) I absolutely love pearls, and I am going to be wearing them on my wedding day. In fact, I am going to be wearing a lot of pearls.

Remember those Kate Spade shoes that the hive helped me decide to wear? They have pearl details on them.

My mother is also going to be giving me for my birthday a pair of crystal and pearl earrings. They were the perfect find, especially since they match my dress’s belt!

Yesterday, my FMIL and FFIL presented me with another gift for my wedding day: two beautiful pearl necklaces! (My FILs are amazing and wonderful people.) FFIL brought them back from China last month. So why two? He ended up going shopping for them alone, and he couldn’t figure out which length to buy. So he bought two different ones! I think I will end up wearing them both together.

I probably won’t wear the sweatshirt with the necklaces, though.

Are there any wedding superstitions that you are following—or, like me, ignoring? How much stock do you put into superstitions?

I hadn’t heard that about pearls! I wore quite a few on my wedding day, as well :)

I hadn’t heard that either, but I am in your boat and will be wearing a fair amount of pearls - so hopefully it is the second one! I love the look of the two necklaces together - can’t wait to see everything together!

Yeah, I’m hoping that if either of these superstitions is true, is the pearls taking the place of the bride’s tears one, because I’ll be wearing a lot too - my dress itself has pearls in the beading on the bodice and train!

Really though, I don’t put much stock in superstition :) We make our own fortune.

I like the sentiment that it takes away the tears. Your pieces are beautiful!

I’m deciding not to see my Mr on the wedding day before I walk down the aisle. I heard that’s good luck!!

My mom told me it’s good luck to have the ceremony start on the half hour. That way the minute hand is moving up, foretelling good things to come. So we’re having the ceremony at 5:30 instead of 6:00.

@Mrs. Candy Apple, @Miss Dalmatian, @SadieBee, @Jessica.Dirr: Looks like I am in good company by wearing pearls!

@Miss Porcupine: Yeah, what an interesting superstition! I had no idea until someone offhandedly mentioned it to me the other day. And thanks for the compliment!

@Mrs. Pony: Thank you!

@Missmaybee: Your reception sounds like it is going to be beautiful. I hope that I can see pictures of it!

@Cecilia: Yeah, that seems to be another common superstition! It’s another one Mr. Mole and I won’t be following, though, due to the logistics of our wedding day. I hope it brings you good luck, though!

@Oatmealpie: How interesting! I’ve never heard that one before. I wish you lots of luck!

I love love love pearls and will definitely be wearing them on my wedding day! I’m just going to stick with the second sentiment that they replace real tears and bring a happy marriage =)

Wow, I’d never heard of that before! But since my e-ring is a pearl, I’m going to put stock in the second one as well! ;)

Gorgeous finds, btw, I am coveting those necklaces!

I grew up hearing about brides not wearing pearls cause it will bring them a lot of tears in their married lives, I was surprised to find so many bees wearing pearls!

I honestly never heard that about pearls, and while I won’t be wearing any at the wedding, I do love them!! I always used to wear a strand in college and one of my nicknames actually ended up being Pearls! I love that you’ll wear both necklaces - they look great together!

@calypso0712: Good choice with the interpretation! :)
@toshella: I love pearl rings! They are always so beautiful. And thanks! FFIL did well.

@Coffee cup: That’s so interesting! I never even heard that before this week. I think a lot of people have pearls passed down to them through relatives, so it makes for an easy something “old” (and beautiful, of course).
@Miss Fox: That’s not a bad nickname! Thank you. Sometimes indecision can lead to good outcomes. :)

I have never heard this pearl thing but I’m wearing a lot as well! My earrings are seriously almost identical to yours! My pearl is ivory rather than white. I’m also wearing my grandmother’s pearl necklace and possibly a pearl brooch!

I freaking love pearls. It’s my sorority jewel, and I’m wearing the fantastic strand the parentals bought me in college.

@Miss Sunhat: All of your jewelry sounds lovely! I bet it’s going to look stunning together.
@Future Army Wife: Awesome! I wouldn’t mind joining a sorority that meant I get pearls. :)
