Miss Unicycle's Picture
Miss Unicycle, Chicago, IL Age and Occupation: 23, Editor for a Web Publishing Company Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, MD/PhD Student Engagement Date: March 26, 2011 Wedding Date: June 2012 Venue: Bridges of Poplar Creek About Me: I’m a writer by trade who likes analyzing pop culture, making fun of celebrities, and laughing until I cry. I’m the queen of half-assed crafts, and there’s nothing I won’t try to DIY. You can usually find me reading blogs on my laptop in front of a good Lifetime movie, wine in hand. I’m planning a polka-dotted summertime wedding to my physics geek college sweetheart, and when I’m not making stupid puns I’m freaking out about my wedding timeline.
About Miss Unicycle

I’m not gonna be coy with you guys: I can honestly say that I love my hair. I don’t often admit to liking things about myself. I guess people are less likely to call you a bridezilla if you’re self-deprecating. So before I go on and on about how much I love my hair, I’ll self-deprecate for a few sentences: I look like a 12 year old. I have gaps in my teeth. I’m extremely cheap. And I’m totes awk.

That being said…my hair rocks. No, it rawks. It’s friggin sweet, you guys. OK, it’s not actually that great. But it just may be in the running for my best feature. Coming in at a close second is, um…nothing. (See, self-deprecation for the win.) I always say there are two hair types: hair that needs to be styled before you leave the house, and hair that doesn’t. Straight-haired chicks are always jealous of curly girls and vice versa, but neither has to do much of anything to their hair between showering and showing their face in public.

Curls! Purty!

Straight hair! Sleek!

I, on the other hand, cannot just wash and wear. My hair post-shower looks like a cross between an elderly poodle and someone who’s just been electrocuted. If you know me IRL, you’ll probably be surprised to hear me wax poetic about my hair because I so often lament how much I hate it. But on the plus side, I can curl it or straighten it, and it’ll hold its style until it gets wet. That’s my def of friggin’ sweet.

Look who else has friggin’ sweet hair.

On top of its ability to hold whatever style I give it, my hair also has a pretty good color. (Translation: I’ve never dyed my hair before. This comes in very handy when playing 10 fingers, let me tell you.) And even more fortunate, my hair is also thick. Every ponytail holder that’s ever had the pleasure of wrapping itself around my luscious locks has snapped in pure terror. Nothing can rein it in! It’s unstoppable!

I’ve loved big hair since I learned how to back comb. And I’ve had some epic hairdos before:

My massive head of hair and my love for larger than life hairstyles go hand in hand. It’s kind of a chicken and egg situation; I wonder if I would gravitate toward dramatic, enormous hairstyles if my hair wasn’t already enormous to begin with. But…it doesn’t really matter. Without further ado (a-hair-do? Get it? It’s a pun. Am I trying too hard?) here is my wedding hairspiration:

I started out wanting a half updo with curls and lots of volume at the crown, like Carrie Underwood (Mr. Unicycle’s other crush…grrr). I’m not a huge fan of updos on me because I like the way my face looks better when there’s hair around it. (My face just can’t hold a candle to the amazingness of my hair.)

Or this lovely ‘do.

I’m not sure of the logistics of this hairstyle, but I love absolutely everything about this photo.

Then I saw Miss Pony’s hair trial and inspiration photos, which made me seriously reconsider the self-imposed no updos rule.

All I can say is “I want!”

I also collected a bunch of other seemingly random updo photos:

The braid’s not gonna happen on me, but the photo is absolutely amazing. I just want to gaze at that braid and possibly climb up it. It’s so thick and perfectly undone! Unfortunately I don’t think my hair will ever be this long or this thick.

Then I came across these pics of Julianne Moore from the movie A Single Man, which I’d somehow not ever heard of before:

All I could think when I saw these photos was This is my wedding hair! I researched pics from the movie for a while before realizing that this might be another one of my hair-brained (har de har har) ideas that sounds dramatic and avant-garde to me but ridiculous and tacky to the outside world.

So what do you think of Julianne’s hair? Too costumey? Or just the right amount of volume for me?

LOVE Julianne’s hair. I think that would be an AMAZZZZZING do for a wedding. I, on the other hand, might have to call in the work of multiple hair extension devices to pull something like that off. I do not have hair that could remotely be considered thick. All pony tail holders who have held my hair have been wrapped around it within an inch of their “lives”. A 1″ hair binder will have to be wrapped around my hair four, yes, FOUR times!! Sad I know. Anyway, I think you could ROCK that look!!

I think it is next to impossible for a bride to look ridiculous… I mean out of context anywear but a wedding? Sure. But if she feels beautiful. There are pretty much no rules. I say go for the Julianne More hair!

It was kind of odd reading this post, because… I feel the same way. My hair is my best feature. It’s wavy. Not straight, not full-on curly. I need a flat iron to get it straight and a curling iron to get it curly. But it’s thick, luxurious, long, it’s an effort to find a clip that will hold it so I resort to scrunchies, and pretty much every hair stylist I’ve ever met exclaims about how thick and healthy it is. Then they compare me to a shag rug in terms of hair per square inch. =)

My face shape has me looking best with my hair pulled back from my face while still being otherwise down, though, so it’s a half-updo for me.

I’m not sure about Julianne’s hair working. Give it a go in a hair trial and see what you think? My only concern right now is that with it piled so much atop your head… will it be too heavy over the course of the day? My hair is very heavy because of being so thick, and I can’t wear it atop my head for too long a time or I get a headache. But hopefully it’s distributed in such a way that it’s not as much a concern. Good luck! :)

I love a big hair do! I say go for it - that is what a trial is for. As long as it doesn’t age you, I say strut your stuff!

@Miss Aardvark: I like the way you think!

@marieta: good point! I also have a face shape that looks best with some hair down, which is why I’m still not completely sold on an updo.

@Miss Sunhat: I hope it DOES age me–then I won’t look like a child bride! hahahha
