Mrs. Lioness, Atlanta Age and Occupation: 25, Physical Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Attorney Engagement Date: August 29, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Anthony’s Fine Dining About Me: I’m a Southern girl with New England roots. I say "wicked" and "y’all" in the same sentence and I like to drink sweet tea with my lobster. Mr. Lion and I are both former Floridians now living in Atlanta, which fortunately is still SEC country...Go Gators! We both love baseball, coffee, traveling, cooking, and playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPhones all day long. I’m very passionate about the things and the people I love, and I tend to plan things with all of my heart...our wedding, of course, is no different! Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!

Love is Where We Are: Pat

November 18th, 2011 @ 5:18 am by Mrs. Lioness

One of my favorite things about going to weddings is to observe all of the different traditions and rituals, whether cultural or otherwise. It’s always interesting how every bride and groom bring different customs to both their ceremony and their reception. I love it, because it makes each wedding unique.

I was especially looking forward to one particular tradition at our reception. Every time a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma gets married, all of her sorority sisters who are present at the wedding sing a song called “Pat” to her. It’s a silly song, but our sorority has been practicing this tradition for over 100 years and there’s just something about that history that I absolutely adore. I’ve seen displays of other Greek organizations’ traditions at other weddings and the reaction is always the same: the rest of the guests look at them like they’re nuts! And maybe we did look a little weird, but from our end of things, we had a blast.

Okay, maybe the girls looked a little ridiculous…

…but I thought it was pretty entertaining.

It takes a special group of people to be willing to embarrass themselves for you. I loved them for it.

Are any of you in a sorority that has a similar tradition? If so, are you planning on incorporating it into your reception?

I LOVE this! I’m a Kappa too and although Pat may make you feel a little ridiculous, totally worth it! :)

I was an AZD. For our chapter (not sure if this was the actual tradition or just what our chapter did), the bride sits in a circle and chooses one of the songs for the sisters to sing to her.

So cute!! At my brother’s wedding (he’s a pilot), all the other Air Force pilots there serenaded the bride with that song from Top Gun, and I thought it was the cutest thing ever.

DH was APO but not enough brothers were there to even tell if there was a wedding “thing” (I don’t think there was but I don’t know for sure, they don’t have sweethearts I know that)
Rev J was a Phi Mu Alpha (or MuPhi? I can never remember) and they sang their sweetheart song to his wife at the reception. It was adorable (and wonderfully on key, a benefit of being a music frat)

Yay for fellow greek women! I am an Alpha Gamma Delta and traditionally sisters will sing a song called Candle Lighting Time, which is the same song that is sung when it is annouced that a memeber is pinned or engaged. While I will have a large number of AGDs present, I doubt they can be convinced to sing in front of everyone since most of us couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. :) I think I will be opting for a cute photo op with my sisters.

Oh I’ve never heard of any sorority traditions - we don’t really have them over here, so it’s all new to me!

I’m an Alpha Gam and inviting half the chapter (oy vey). And we don’t have a national song, but each chapter does something unique. We’re def keeping that going at my wedding (and my little’s right before mine!).

i’m also a kappa, but we didn’t do this at my wedding. it wasn’t a huge thing for our chapter so some girls have had it and others didn’t.
