Mrs. Mole's Picture
Mrs. Mole, Los Angeles/Las Vegas Age and Occupation: 29, Test Prep Instructor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, User Experience Architect Engagement Date: April 2011 Wedding Date: January 2012 Venue: Wynn Las Vegas/Bouchon Bistro About Me: I’m a Wisconsinite-turned-Angeleno who is planning a destination wedding in Las Vegas. I am passionate about education: I spent 23 (!) consecutive years in school, and now I work to help other people get into graduate programs. I love running on the treadmill, buying bath products from Lush, learning new moves in step aerobics, and exploring my neighborhood on foot. I am sometimes snobby about food, but I am rarely snobby about books. I read everything from Geoffrey Chaucer to Iris Murdoch to Chuck Klosterman to Candace Bushnell. My fiance and I are getting married on our third anniversary!
About Mrs. Mole

In a previous post, I talked about my efforts to become a healthy, happy, and confident bride (and person) before I walk down the aisle in January. Now I want to talk more specifically about what had helped me lose those 90 pounds and what has been working again this time around. There’s nothing particularly special or unique about me physiologically; if I can do this, so can anyone. So can you.

As everyone knows, there are two major components to weight loss: diet and exercise. You’ve probably heard the saying that weight loss is 90% diet and 10% exercise, right? Well, for me, starting a consistent exercise routine was absolutely, without a doubt, the most important part. Like many women, I am a stress-eater. I tend to eat when I am worried, when I am anxious, when I am nervous. I quickly discovered, though, that a good workout does an even better job of taking away my stress. I could work through my frustrations at my job over a spin class, not with a dozen chocolate chip cookies. I could clear my mind after a disagreement with a friend by running it out on the treadmill, not by smothering it with mac and cheese. With each substitution, I felt better—and grew lighter.

Going to the gym also made me feel like a badass in a Nike ad. That’s right: I just did push-ups! And some free weights! Now I am going to do a couple of miles on the treadmill—faster than I did last week! Faster than you! Regardless of how fast I was actually running or how much weight I was actually lifting or how many push-ups I was actually doing, I felt powerful and strong. The last thing that I wanted to do was feel weighed down by greasy or calorically dense food.

I know that joining a gym, let alone actually working out in one, can be intimidating. So here are some things that I learned along the way:

  1. No one is watching you or judging you. No one cares if you are red-faced or sweaty (unless you don’t wipe down the machine afterward). If someone takes the time to do so, he/she isn’t getting as good of a workout as you are anyway.
  2. Everyone has to start somewhere. The key is to get moving, however slowly. I started running by using a modified version of the Couch to 5K program. (In fact, I modified it to be easier.) Sometimes you have to walk on the treadmill before you can run on it.
  3. Group classes provide an excellent workout—and an excellent opportunity to meet others who can hold you accountable to showing up each week. Thank you ladies of 9:00 AM Step!
  4. Cardio is not the only workout. Add in resistance training and weights if you really want to see the numbers on the scale drop. (I’d recommend picking up a copy of New Rules of Lifting for Women if you need some tips.) Plus, you’ll be able to put on your own gun show.
  5. Working It Out and Off: Pre-Wedding Weight Loss : wedding beauty fitness las vegas Img 18361

I am not quite so ripped anymore, sadly. My mirrors are cleaner.

  6. The little things matter. Yes, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Sure, park a little bit farther away from the mall. Why not, sit on an exercise ball at your desk. Those things all add up over time.
  7. The little things don’t matter as much, though, as the big things. If you want to see serious change over time, you have to put in serious time at the gym (or wherever/however you exercise). I found that I was seeing the most results when I was able to put in four to five hours at the gym per week. I’m seeing these results again. I am comfortably back in my 29″ jeans, and they are even getting a bit baggy.

What items would you add to this list? What have you learned along your own pre-wedding fitness journey?

This is so inspirational and motivational! Did the diet routine eventually fall into place with your workouts?

You have to find something that works for YOU. I really want to get in to running, but it’s so easy for me to opt out of it because I hate it so much. However, I have the Jillian Michaels 30 Day shred and since it’s just 30 minutes of constant activity, I know I can do it. It’s hard, but I can.

And you touched on it, but find ways to encourage yourself! Find motivational pictures. Take a BEFORE picture of you and actually look at it - we can see ourselves so much differently in the mirror vs a picture. Motivational quotes and pictures will really help you out :)

For me I think consistency is the biggest thing. 30 minutes a day is fine if I am losing my breath doing it! But I gotta do it at least 5 days a week, consistently in order to see the results. Of course, I also have to nix any unnatural carbs and really fight to keep the sugar out of my body. Plan meals and premake lunches!

Congrats! For me, getting off the computer is the hardest. But I changed my diet, started working out, and have dropped 30 lbs. And foods that I used to love (especially of the deep fried persuasion) no longer taste so tasty.

This post was very motivating! I’m always uncomfortable going to the gym b/c I’m so NOT athletic looking, and I do get sweaty and red faced. I agree that exercise is a good stress buster. It helps me when I’m sad, angry, stressed out, etc. But I have to keep reminding myself of that when the couch is calling my name!

@Jadyn10150: Thank you for reading and commenting! Good luck on your journey.
@Miss Petit Four: I love that Nike ad too! Good job on your own successes!
@xmissmastix: definitely. The better I felt, the better I wanted to eat. After cutting out a lot of sugary foods, I also noticed that my cravings went down. I will probably write a healthy eating post next week, especially with the holidays coming up.
@futureMFG: Very good point! How do you like the 30 day shred? I’ve heard good things about it, but I have never tried it. I want to start mixing things up.
@goldendreams: I love your suggestion about planning meals and pre making lunches. I know that I can make unwise choices if I let myself get too hungry before I think about meals.

@Future Army Wife: The computer is a huge time suck, isn’t it? (As I sit on my computer… Haha) great job on losing 30 lbs! You should be so proud.
@Miss Unicycle: I get really red faced too! And sweaty. I just make sure to bring a towel. :)
@Rubies: Haha thanks! I am close to getting them back.
@arielle: Than you so much.

Yes! The biggest things that help motivate me are:

1. Having a workout buddy. We hit the gym together 4 times a week. If I start whining about how I don’t want to get up at 7:30am, she is there to help me though it. Also, I’d never want to stand her up, so I always make it to out workout sessions — something I would not have the willpower to do on my own.

2. Having a goal. We’re training for a half-marathon. It’s motivational to have a training program and know exactly what we need to do every day.

3. Reading a book: if you hate running, but you want to love it, read “Born to Run.” I never thought I would start running (I’m more of a “dance in front of the mirror” kinda girl…), but that book got me off my tush and continues to inspire me (in a very biological, evolutionary way — not a sappy-inspirational-stories kind of way.)

I definitely feel like a badass when I work out. I love it. My advice for people is to stay away from cardio and lift weight instead. It is pretty much physiologically impossible for you to get “bulky” without taking steroids. (Google “what women think will happen when they lift weights” to see a pretty funny picture illustrating this). The weight will melt off, you will feel like a badass, and as an added bonus you will be strong too! I actually enjoy running (another Born To Run convert here, I only run wearing Vibram FiveFingers) and I do that also, but the highlight of my week are my weight lifting workout days. Don’t be scared of free weights. They are your friend! :D

@likelimeade: That’s a pretty good book! I used to help coach a 5k training program, and a lot of people signed up after reading it.
@tea: I had it as my computer background for a long time!
@jaina8851: I have my share of minimalist running shoes, but I could never do the 5 fingers. They make my toes feel so weird!
