Miss Fox's Picture
Miss Fox, Washington DC/Havre de Grace, MD Age and Occupation: 26, Massage Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Field Support Engineer Engagement Date: April 18, 2010 Wedding Date: June 2012 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m a dancer turned massage therapist who was born and raised in New York. Alas, true love has brought me “south” where I still maintain my penchants for pretty shoes, wine, crossword puzzles, cherry blossoms, and the Mets. I own more sunglasses than a normal person should and don’t eat red meat (though I make up for it by eating my weight in sushi). I tend to be a big planner who likes to get things started early, but generally end up being indecisive and procrastinating when it comes down to it. I have a (not so) secret crush on Chris Carrabba, but my loyalty and love ultimately goes to the future hubs, of course! Together, my Foxy man and I love to discuss (read: debate) politics and current events, have Mario Kart and Scrabble duels, and just laugh. A lot. We’re hoping and planning for a laid back, fun, summery, rustic vibe to our June wedding that will be genuinely “us” – that is, if we finally make some decisions. Huzzah!

How I Met My In-Laws

November 20th, 2011 @ 9:05 am by Miss Fox

Not quite as hysterical as How I Met Your Mother, but close. Promise.

First, how I met Mr. Foxy’s sister, aka my future foxy sister-in-law (FfSIL).

Foxy and I had been doing our LDR thing for about a month, and it was my turn to visit him for a day or two. The relationship was still fairly new and we only saw each other every other weekend-ish; naturally, we were…how shall I say this…”very passionate” when we saw each other. You know, lots of kisses. And stuff.

Anyway! This particular visit, FfSIL was also supposed to make an appearance and spend the night at Foxy’s apartment since she was in town for business. I was nervous, of course—she would be the first of his family I would meet and I wanted desperately for her to think of me like her long lost sister like me. I like to think I’m a relatively cool person and make a decent first impression, so with Foxy’s urging, I simmered down in preparation for her arrival. So simmered, in fact, that I decided to take a shower. Foxy may or may not have been there.

Oh, hush. It happens.

Long story short, and I’m sure you can see where this is going, FfSIL (who had her own key) comes in while we’re in the shower. I? Was mortified. Foxy was just cracking up, because apparently this was literally the funniest thing in life. Super cool.

FfSIL ended up laughing it off as well, but I definitely pulled a turtle and hid in my shell for the rest of the night. I’m happy to say that we’ve moved on from the whole ordeal, but I still have occasional nightmarish flashbacks.

Second, how I met Foxy’s parents, my future in-laws (FILs for now).

Now when I first met Foxy, he was going to PT for an unspecified shoulder issue related to his lacrosse playing in high school and college. The PT wasn’t really working, so he was going to need pins put in by laproscopic surgery about two months into us dating. I made sure that I would be in town for the surgery to support him and take care of him…as did his parents. I ended up meeting them for the first time the morning of the surgery, and I think all they knew was my name and that I lived in Philly before Foxy got called back for the operation. To make matters “worse,” the last thing Foxy apparently said to his mom before going into surgery was that his dad and I ran away together, since we both went to get some (awkward) lunch without her. Something about trading her in for a younger model. You can imagine how not. funny. that was in the moment!

So thus began the most awkward 5 hours of my life. Sitting in a waiting room with Foxy’s parents, unsure of what to say (I get really shy), not knowing when he’d be out.

And here’s the kicker: the second time I met them? Was when Foxy had to get hernia surgery three months later. That was an adventure, especially since the poor guy couldn’t move for days and needed help just sitting up and walking to the bathroom.

Fortunately, we ended the hospital rendezvous’ after that and now have a pretty amusing story. I actually get along super well the FILs and love them like my own now!

Do you have any funny/interesting/different how-I-met-my-in-laws stories? Do tell!

I met his parents, and sister, and sister’s husband, at the hospital, at the bedside of their dying grandmother (she passed away the next day). I had an awful cold too, but was trying to be really discreet about the gallons of snot my body was producing. I met his brother-in-law at the water fountain (he worked at the hospital, and I recognized him from photos). Oh yeah. Awkward and sad all at the same time.

So, this is not a story about the first time I met my father in law, but this was one of the first times I was really around my husband’s parents. We were at their house for family game night about a month into us dating, and I walk into the kitchen as my father in law was doing the dishes. He looks at me with a super serious face and flicks water at me, proclaiming “Grandchildren!” like some voodoo enchantment. Having only dated for a month, I was a little shell shocked, but this has now become one of our favorite jokes!

I can totally relate! My FSIL was the first of the family that I met…My honey and I were sitting on his back porch drinking coffee one morning when she came over to get his house ready for her son’s birthday party that day. I was in a tank top and underwear!!! She walked out the backdoor and said, “mom’s on her way”….I very quickly excused myself to go put on some clothes! I also met the ENTIRE family that day! aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins, and all of his close friends…..literally EVERYONE! It was entertaining….to this day he still says, “I can’t believe you stayed”.

The very first time I went over to FMIL’s was last Thanksgiving. Mr. Hawk stuffed his face and promptly fell asleep. For hours. It was a little awkward to say the least…

@Coffeecake: Oh my gosh you poor thing! At least it showed your were supportive and caring from the get go, right? :)
@missgracekelly: Oh my god. I would have turned beet red and melted!!
@amyalmighty: Hah, I love it! At least she gave you a warning!!
@Miss Hawk: Oh dear.. I can attest, leaving you “alone” with the parents on the first meet-n-greet is definitely awkward at it’s best.
