Whoops…I Said the V-Word

November 21st, 2011 @ 11:58 am by Miss Elk

I must admit I am a bit nervous to write this post as I know I will get slack for it—oh well.

I’ve noticed a bit of backlash in the wedding community because of the overabundance of “vintage” weddings. Where people used to ooh and ahh at the novelty of mismatched china, the affordability of Mason jar centerpieces, and amazing DIY details, there are now cries for the “regular everyday brides” to unite and show more “real” weddings that are more “doable,” and if not doable at least not that horrid word vintage.

I am here to say, I am sorry you feel this way. I love all weddings, and whatever you decide to do I’m sure it will be gorgeous and lovely. But over a year ago, before it was a sin to say, I fell in love with *shudder* milk glass vases. And, moreover, I happen to love peonies and garden roses. And, wouldn’t you know it, I ENJOY doing DIY projects! Yes I am busy, but preparing for the wedding months in advance gives me an outlet of excitement and enjoyment.

So even though this new movement would have me feeling bad that I happen to like a certain style, make me feel that my wedding details are overdone and not fresh, I don’t care!

And what’s more, not a SINGLE wedding I have ever attended has included any of the details we are discussing as overused. So while the world of wedding blogs might be totally over the v-word, I know my guests, who don’t spend their days on Style Me Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, don’t even know such a wedding exists yet!

And with that, I’m heading to the Salvation Army to pick up some more milk glass.

Where do you stand on the v-word?

I know what you mean! If I could have 2 weddings I’d use more v-word decor. I’m going with “retro” as my descriptive word hahahah

I think this is the case with any trend. If it works for you, do it! If not, forget it. I am having a candy buffet even though those “have been done to death”. Why because I Looove (the extra letters mean it even more!) candy. Vintage it up girl!

I completely and utterly agree with you. I’ve always liked vintage stuff, and grew up with my mom and her friends teaching me an appareciation of that aesthetic. Yet I had no idea you could do that for a wedding, so when I first saw Ruffled I was blown away. Our wedding is going to have vintage elements, and unabashedly :) The only people who might think anything of it (aside from how awesome it is) will be the other brides-to-be that pore over wedding sites. And if they judge me because anything being too “vintagey,” I frankly won’t care :D

I’m all about the V-Word and the ponies. I just ordered some from afloral.com….GREAT PRICES!!! I too dig the milk glasses but I put different twist on it. I wanted something similar but with color, I painted glasses light blue from the inside and they look great. Can’t wait to see how all you “V” details come together.

Oh and I’m assured none of my guest have been to anything like a “V” circus wedding complete with peanuts and cotton candy.

I think that if you love vintage details, that’s awesome and you shouldn’t feel bad about it! I also love the VW (Vintage Wedding :) and even dreamed about having one, but when it comes down to it…it just doesn’t make sense in my downtown, 27th floor reception venue. Nothing I have chosen for my wedding has a vintage look and I am TERRIBLE at anything DIY. Clearly, I am not the prime candidate for a VW but it sounds like you are! I think the problem is when people like me try to have a VW and it doesn’t match who they really are.

Yup, Im going the vintage route too. However Ive never seen through Facebook or attended a wedding with a vintage theme. Were all just inundated with the vintage ideas because we troll weddingbee on a regular basiss :p

Oh my goodness, this post could have been written by me!! I love the rustic, vintage look, and after seeing it over and over again on different wedding blogs, i started to worry it was being overdone. But you’re right, it will be new to most of my guests. I’ve never been to a vintage/rustic wedding. I did go to a rustic barn wedding last year and that’s about as close as I’ve seen in real life. Good luck and thanks for sticking with what you want!

While it’s not for me I do think that “vintage” weddings can be done well & end up looking amazing! If you love it- do it!

I completely agree, Miss Elk. I’m a DIYer at heart and while most of my projects pre-engagement required power tools, I’ve had a lot of fun channeling my crafty energy into wedding projects.

I like the idea of using vessels and decor items that had a life before the wedding and will be repurposed afterwards.

I’m starting to feel exactly the same way about the “v” word! I think the same can be said for the “r” word - “rustic.” We are incorporating lace into our decor in a big way, and for some reason it’s starting to seem like lace is up there with milk glass and mason jars and everything else that is so-called “overdone.” Does it make me worry that our wedding will be just like everyone else’s? Honestly…a little. But I know that we’re staying true to OUR roots and, like you said, our guests know nothing about wedding trends! We just want our day to be beautiful and represent us as a couple. If that involves something that’s overdone, so be it. Great post! :)

I agree totally with the post and frugal fiance!! I’m so excited about my upcoming wedding and all of the details. I have not been to a vintage wedding myself, and I’m sure most of my guests havent either.

I’m looking forward to my mismatched china and mason jars!

Major props for “Style Me Who-Must-Not-Be-Named”- that pretty much made my day. Clever and a Harry Potter reference all in one? Epic win :).

Yeah…I’m going with a shabby chic vintage look for my wedding. I also worried, especially during the summer months when it was EVERYWHERE, that it was overdone, but I know most of my guests will have never seen anything like it! I personally don’t think we brides should care what other ppl think, since its OUR wedding!

love it! I am doing it too… I think that there is definitely some major gaps between the blog world and the real wedding world…

I love you for this post. There are times where I feel like people might read my posts about blue mason jars and start to gag, but to me and everyone I know it’s unique. And I like it! No one should have to apologize for liking a certain style or feel! And the HP reference? We should be best friends. :)

Ummm I LOoooove vintage, I mean the “v” word. I am planning  a “v” wedding myself. I am a cake decorator and I deliver wedding cakes weekly, sometimes several times a week and I have NEVER seen a “v” word wedding…ever! All brides should have the wedding of their dreams, no matter how modern, retro or in between.

Only those of us who live in weddingland keep going on and on about how things are overdone. I did a photobooth at my wedding and it was the first time a lot of folks had seen it done at a wedding before. I also did a lot of things from the bee that looked overdone but at my wedding, folks hadn’t seen it before. FWIW, I thought when you said ‘v’ word, you were going to tell the hive that you are a virgin :)

I too am using milk glass, peonies, and DIY projects and damn proud of it! (We can’t all have super expensive and elaborately tall centerpieces.) But, I’m starting to hate the phrase, “shabby-chic.” Haha!

I LOVE the vintage look, and Milk glass makes me swoon, true, I have seen it grow in popularity here lately, but that does not make it a bad thing, so thank you for posting this and bringing the issue to the public! lol
