When The Man’s Away…

November 21st, 2011 @ 4:13 pm by Mrs. Honey

Mr. Honey and I have been fortunate in our relationship that we haven’t had to spend many nights apart from each other, much less endure a long distance relationship. While it hardly compares to being in a LDR, I’m currently alone for sixteen long nights while Mr. Honey kayaks with four of his friends in the jungles of Ecuador. This is by far the longest we’ve spent apart, and while he doesn’t have phone service he thankfully emails me daily with updates; usually starting with “I’m Alive,” which is appropriate considering the dangerous nature of his adventure.

The purpose of the post, though, is not for me to whine about being alone. I don’t know if it’s the fact that I’ve been alone (aside from my amazing girlfriends who call regularly to see if I need a beer, wine or dinner—or all of the above) but I’ve managed to become extremely motivated with wedding tasks. It’s not that Mr. Honey doesn’t want to help contribute or even purposely distracts me from wedding stuff, it’s more that when he’s chillaxin’ on the couch next to me I’d rather chat with him than be sitting in my craft room by myself.

I tend to do things better by myself anyway, like cleaning the house. I’d rather him be gone the whole entire day then to be there getting in my way trying to help vacuum or dust. I have a routine and an end goal in mind, and sometimes it’s just easier to do it my way. Control freak? A little bit.

I was reveling in how much I had gotten done in a short few days, and I started to think that how just two weeks prior I had a minor meltdown. I panicked about food, I worried about my mom’s dress, I couldn’t find a necklace or cardigans and I definitely couldn’t imagine seeing the final product that is our invitations. There’s just.so.much. Yet here I am, with each of those things checked off the list and feeling rather accomplished. It’s easy to get caught up in everything we have to get done, but somehow, someway, things do, in fact, get done. And, go figure—it’s usually when you aren’t having a bridal meltdown that things happen. It was hard for me to see it all coming together, finishing little pesky tasks, and I had a hard time believing other bees/brides when they would say “It will all come together.” Well, here’s another bride stating that it does.

In case you missed my hint above, here’s a little teaser of something I’ve been working very diligently on:

When The Man's Away... : wedding durango invitations stationery 000 0002

That’s right, the Honey invites are very near completion and will be getting mailed out next.week! I can’t wait to share them, along with everything else I’ve been crafting/buying/finishing, with you.

Did it take your significant other leaving to get some things accomplished? Do you work better alone, or as a team?

Oh man - I so prefer him to be gone when I want to clean the house! I’ll cop to being a total control freak and thankfull he has helped me chillax a bit but still - just let me do it my way sometimes! LOL Can’t wait to see the invites - your date is getting so close! (I still like to pretend for my sanity that I have tons of time until my date!)

I know exactly what you mean! I haven’t seen Mr. Unicycle since Halloween, and I have been churning out craft projects and blog posts like my life depends on it since then. Silver lining?

I definitely clean better when Mr. Mink isn’t around! He’s on the radio every Saturday morning and it’s amazing what I can get done during his show. I can clean my condo or run all of the week’s errands. I feel so productive!

Mr. Honey’s trip sounds amazing! I also felt like I got more done when I wasn’t distracted with guys or cats around :)

Haha, I know EXACTLY how you feel about the cleaning stuff. I definitely get more accomplished when Mr. P is away or busy with something else. For instance, right now he is watching football (snooze for me) so I am finally catching up on blogging. One good thing about football season…

I know exactly what you mean. My fiance and I have been apart since early August and but I will see him in a few days, we don’t have a LDR its just that way right now. We were engaged not long before he left all we had was a date set and now everything is planned, only thing left to do are a few crafty things that I took on because we have the time, need to finalize invites, menus and programs in the next 6 months. So yes, lots can get done when you want to fill your time. Looking forward to seeing your invites, a friend of mine is designing mine, I can’t wait for them to go to print.

I know what you mean about being more productive when the FI is away. December is FI’s busy time at work, and he’s already started the 10 hour days. Last year I remember pining and eating a lot of junk food - this year I’m going to try to be productive with my time alone: go to the gym reguarly and get some crafts done.
Hope your FI stays safe!

Yaaay! Can’t wait to see the invites! And yes, I do much better when FI isn’t under feet. I usually wake up hours before him on the weekends and that’s when all the cleaning gets done!

Ha, I’m happy so many of you are in the same boat of getting more done when the man’s away!
@Miss Sunhat: I’ll let you keep thinking that if it helps :)
@Mrs. Hyena: I love that feeling!!
@Mrs. Pony: Oh man the cats are a whole different challenge…and the big dog likes to try and help with everything!
@Miss Porcupine: I ditto you on the one good thing about football ;)
@Miss Ke Aloha: Awesome, way to go woman!
@toshella: I love when my time gets filled with better things than snacking…crafting isn’t the gym, but its better than a bag of chips!
@TinyTina: Exactly what I do!

I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately due to FI work- he is usually away 5 days a week due to work. Some weeks (like right now) it’s much longer. We’re currently on day 12 of him being gone- and he won’t be home for another week & a half =(

I definitely get more done when he isn’t home- when he finally gets home I don’t want to do anything but sit on the couch and hang out.

Congratulations on getting so much done
