Spoonful of Love: My Somethings

November 22nd, 2011 @ 4:45 pm by Mrs. Teaspoon

“Something old, something new,

something borrowed, something blue

and a sixpence in her shoe”

Everyone knows this…well, everyone knows at least most of it, and I was very keen to include these elements into our day…all of them!

Something old

My engagement ring: this is the oldest thing that I was wearing. However, this portion of the day is meant to be something from my family. Not to worry, I know you all want to see another picture of Gladis.

My Nana’s ’4’ necklace:

I tied  my dearly departed grandmother’s necklace around my bouquet. I wore it down the aisle and for photographs, then when I arrived at the reception, my Mum wore it for the rest of the evening. This was a surprise I wasn’t expecting but was really lovely! I actually wear a very similar “3″ necklace given to me by my grandparents on my 18th birthday, as it is my birth number. 4 was my Nana’s.

Hanky - I had another something old, which was actually given to me by Mr Teaspoon’s grandmother a few months before the wedding. It actually got a lot of use. She was sure to tell me that it had indeed been washed prior to giving it to me—-it came in very handy, that’s for sure.

Something new

Technically there are about 20 things that I had on that day that were new. However, the newest and most special was the gift Mr Teaspoon gave me on our last date night before our wedding. He had this beautiful pearl necklace made by the same jeweler that did our wedding rings. It went perfectly with my dress and was so special to wear!

Something borrowed

I was able to borrow a friend’s bridal purse to use on the day. I’m pretty sure all that I actually had in there was a hanky, my ID (goodness knows why I thought I would need that) and my lipstick.

Something blue

My shoes…yes, you know they were awesome! The other blue thing was my underwear—no, you do not need to know how awesome they were…just know that they were indeed awesome. You can even see my little bees on the back of my shoes!

Sixpence in her shoe

We had to google it the morning of the wedding, because it was meant to go in one shoe, and we couldn’t remember which! (It’s the left, FYI.) It represents wealth and good fortune and whilst mine wasn’t in the shoe, it was taped to the base of my shoe and I had forgotten about it until the next morning when I saw it taped on the bottom! Lucky Mum had kept a few sixpences around for the Christmas pudding! Bridesmaid M actually used this for her wedding a week ago and I’m hopeful it will bring us both good fortune.

Did you have everything in the rhyme with you on your wedding day?

mine were very similar to yours! my ring was old (bought at an antique shop). my dress/shoes were new. the hanky was borrowed - it used to belong to my grandmother (my aunt carried it during her wedding too). my shoes were blue.

this is the first I’ve ever heard of the sixpence thing though!

Can you tell me what you mean by birth number? I love the necklaces and that you found a way to have them part of your big day!

You thought you needed your ID because every other time in your life when you were dressing up all pretty and putting stuff in a clutch… you DID need an ID!

I love your engagement ring. So pretty!

Love, love, love the photos! Gorgeous ring!!!

I hadn’t heard of the sixpence part of the rhyme either. Genius to tape it to the bottom of your shoe - goodness knows it would slip out of mine!

I’m curious about what a birth number is, too. What’s the deal?

BTW, love the site! It’s my first time here and I’m so glad I found it. :-) Stashing in the feed reader! (yes, still use one of those…)

@Ms.GoodEarth: Shoes are from a store called Panache, a bridal store in the Sydney CBD, they were Ivory and I had them dyed blue.

@Jadyn10150: @WPB Weddings: Birth number, not sure thats the right term for it? Thats just what we call it. I will give my Nana’s example, her birthdate was 9 9 1939 so add 9+9+1+9+3+9 = 40, then add 4+0 = 4. Does that make sense?

@Mrs. Teaspoon: Aha! Sounds like numerology. Very cool! It’s so nice that you shared that tradition with your grandmother and represented her on your special day. :-)
