The Loss of a Loved One

November 22nd, 2011 @ 11:53 am by Miss Doily

Quite simply, this is the most difficult post I have ever had to write in my life. I don’t even know where to begin, or what to say. My entire world has changed, and I’m still unsure of how to deal with it. Even to write the words make it real, something I am not sure I am ready to admit.

In one short phone call, my life has been forever altered. My grandmother called me this past weekend to inform me that my father, at the age of 45, had passed away. My father and I have had a very tumultuous relationship. However, in the last year we had ended our 10 year estrangement and were working to rebuild our relationship. Now, I never get to see the accumulation of that relationship. I don’t get to have my father walk me down the aisle, or do a first dance. And the most difficult of all, I don’t get to ever introduce my future children to their grandfather.

In the midst of my sorrow, something else has happened.

My niece has entered the world. Less than 48 hours after finding out that my father was no longer with us, a beautiful new life has entered our family. It’s been incredibly bittersweet.

Even with only 3 months to go, wedding planning has been put on hold while I work through my grief.

Don’t worry, I will come back, but right now its just too painful to look at anything about my big day—my big day that my father will not be at.

I want to say thank you to the hive members who have reached out to me and my family. I am eternally grateful for the kind words and the prayers. I always knew that this was a kind community, but the way I have been supported through this shows me just how great it is to be part of the hive.

I am so sorry for your loss. I understand how you are feeling, as my father and I had a similar situation. My father unexpectedly passed away at the age of 50, just a few years after we rekindled our relationship at the birth of my daughter. It’s hard to celebrate such a momentous time in life without your father at your side, but I assure you he will be there with you in spirit. I felt my father’s presence at several different occasions on my wedding day. xo

So sorry for your loss. I know it’s hard, but try and find peace in your surrounding friends and family. Maybe the silver lining is that you got a chance to know your father in a way you might never had the opportunity to if you didn’t reach out. He’ll be with you, at your wedding, in spirit.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Hang in there. It’s a tough place to be in. I feel sad every day that my parents won’t be there to meet my future children so I can definitely relate. Big hug.
