Miss Hawk, Richmond, VA Age and Occupation: 26, Finance Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, District Supervisor Engagement Date: March 13, 2011 Wedding Date: May 2012 Venue: The Chapel of the Sir Christopher Wren Building, 2007 Legacy Hall About Me: I’m an Arizona-born girl who has spent the majority of my life living below the Mason-Dixon line. The South has definitely earned a special place in my heart (alongside my Virginia born and bred fiance, of course!). We are planning a traditional Christian ceremony at my alma mater in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, followed by a rocking reception filled with Southern cooking and vintage/shabby chic details. When we’re not wedding planning, we enjoy spending time with our three dogs, going for runs together, watching plenty of football (or baseball depending on the season), and sampling new wine.

Who Will Pronounce Us Man and Wife?

November 23rd, 2011 @ 12:26 pm by Miss Hawk

One reason I think Mr. Hawk and I work together is our shared common beliefs when it comes to religion. Both of us grew up in families where faith and Christianity were an integral part of our upbringing. So having a traditional Christian ceremony in a church was a no-brainer. The difficulty was who would officiate?

Lucky for us, it was more of an overabundance of options that brought on our dilemma. Mr. Hawk’s stepfather is a pastor who performed the ceremonies of two of Mr. Hawk’s siblings, so he was an option. (Although he did make a joke that his track record wasn’t exactly stellar…not that I’m superstitious or anything…) Being members of a church in Richmond, Mr. Hawk and I also have developed a relationship with our church’s pastor, and we loved the idea of having him be a part of our wedding, too. And then we had our last contender: do you remember when I mentioned FMIL’s sneak attack on Mr. Hawk and how she put the pressure on him to buy a ring? Well, at the time she mentioned that she would officiate the ceremony herself since she had become ordained. At the time, we weren’t at the place to be thinking about a ceremony, but almost a year later her suggestion had stuck with us.

We decided that it would be incredibly special to have FMIL perform the ceremony, but Mr. Hawk did have some concerns. He was worried that she would never say no just to prevent disappointing him. He was concerned that she wouldn’t get to sit back and really enjoy the ceremony. In the end, Mr. Hawk did decide to ask her, making it clear that we would not be upset if she’d rather enjoy the ceremony from the pews. Apparently she didn’t hesitate to take on the role. (YAY!)

We’ve talked about the very basics of the ceremony with her but have yet to do any concrete planning. I can’t wait for the three of us to sit down and plot out the specifics. Having Mr. Hawk’s mom be such a big part of our wedding will definitely be special.

Do you plan on having a friend or family member officiate?

We are! FI’s brother (and best man) is officiating.

If we can’t get my FI’s family pastor to do it, I plan on asking my uncle who is also a pastor. We don’t have it set in stone yet.

That is so awesome that FMIL is doing it for you.

It’s great that you’re having someone so meaningful to both of you officiate.. you can’t beat that! I actually went the opposite way - both of my parents are pastors, but I really didn’t want them to worry about officiating or having any other responsibility aside from just being my parents and enjoying themselves. Also.. I didn’t want to choose. That would have be an adventure, lol!

I have always wanted the minister who married my parents to officiate my wedding, but he is in his late 80’s now, although I know he would do a wonderful job still, I figured it might just be best to invite him and let him relax. His son, who has known me since birth, will be marrying us.

My dad married us, and he was perfect! It was a last minute decision, but it’s one I’m so happy we made. Our ceremony was so intimate and personal, and my dad is actually a really good officiant. I’m excited there’s another bee around the hive getting married by a family member!

Aww, that is so incredibly sweet! We thought about asking a friend/family member to officiate, but at the end of the day we decided we want them to be able to sit and witness our ceremony so we hired someone else to officiate.

That’s awesome! We have a family friend who’s being ordained in the next few weeks as a volunteer if someone here doesn’t work out.
