Belgian Beers or Mexican Margaritas?

November 23rd, 2011 @ 11:00 pm by Mrs. Mole

As an incredibly generous wedding present, Mr. Mole’s parents will be giving us 5,000 Euros for our honeymoon. Mr. Mole’s older sister and her husband took the money after their wedding and ran off to Spain on a fabulous vacation. I feel serious trip envy when I look through their pictures and hear their stories of fabulous hotels, dinners, and sightseeing adventures. So I immediately started dreaming about spending our honeymoon drinking great beer in Brussels or eating paella in Madrid or riding ferries around the islands in Greece.

However, there was one major roadblock to these European dreams: time.

Mr. Mole just started his job in July, so we have to be careful about how many vacation days that he takes in the first quarter of 2012. We are already having to take four days off in January between our destination wedding and hometown party. We can probably get another five days off in February for our honeymoon. If we leave on a Sunday, the day after our hometown reception, as planned, we are probably looking at a max of a seven-night vacation.

I know that a seven-night honeymoon is nothing to sneeze at. It’s more than a lot of people get. So for that I am very thankful. But we worried that the long flights from LAX, our desire to drive to and around several different countries, and my compulsion to see all of the guidebook-recommended sights would add up to a pretty hectic, jam-packed vacation. And when I think of honeymoon, I certainly don’t think hectic and jam-packed. I think lounging around, sleeping in, and generally relaxing. I think sharing time in a huge jetted hot tub. I think eating and drinking lots of delicious things. I think spending quality time with my new husband.

Quality time indeed

After discussing our visions for a perfect honeymoon, one place instantaneously popped into our minds: Mexico! It’s a place that we love and has special meaning for us. And it’s a place where we can stay without worrying too much about the time. But, I wonder, is it a place that is special enough? Is it a place that will be memorable enough? Shouldn’t we go somewhere new that we can explore as newlyweds?

So, what would you do?

After having spent two weeks in the Riviera Maya, there isn’t anywhere else I would rather go again. Pick Mexico, you will be SOOOO relaxed and rested when you get back.

No honey moon set at this time. I’d like to go somewhere like Yellowstone, but I know my FI would want nothing more than to sit his ass on a beach for a week. We haven’t talk much about it yet.

We planned the honeymoon before the wedding… a trip to Palm Springs for Modernism week. It will be nice to get away from the dreary drab of the northwest in February. It’s a month after our wedding due to family conflicts with getting married right before the festival, but we’re excited none-the-less.

My parents’ never took a honeymoon so I’m excited to be able to do anything at all. Especially considering that I just started a job and my beloved just started a business.

@Mrs. Meerkat: Ooh, that is the area that we are thinking about in Mexico. Any specific advice on things to do, see, eat, or drink?
@knvprincess143: Mr. Mole is trying to plan a vacation to Yellowstone too, whereas I am the beach person. It seems like we are opposites. :)
@Lexy: Palm Springs is so gorgeous! It is definitely a great place to go in February. We were thinking for a long time that we were going to delay our honeymoon until the summer and then just do a weekend away, but I am glad that we were able to rearrange some time and money to go the week after. I think I’ll need a break after all of this planning! Congrats to you and your FI for your new jobs/business.

I love Brussels! Belgian beer is amazing, and it’s a beautiful country.
The tricky thing is, it might not match up to a super romantic relaxing honeymoon dream. The weather in that part of the continent is unpredictable so it could be wet and chilly or humid and too hot… or perfect. It’s pretty impossible to know. It’s also the kind of place where you get out and do things, not sit and relax.
I also think you can see all of Brussels in a couple days so you might feel restless there for a whole week.

What I suggest, is a trip through the Belgian countryside. See a bit of Brussels sure, but then research the little gem towns that have microbreweries and historic scenary. Stay at little B&Bs, and take the train around.
Also Belgium is very small so you’re much closer to surrounding countries than you think! It’s only a few hours by TGV train (beautiful train) to Paris! Tickets are quite cheap if you buy at the right time. Would be a cute day trip just to run over to Paris and see the Eiffel Tower!
If you do go to Belgium, make sure you just go right for the microbrew beers. They have a lot of mass produced beer, it’s not so special and you can find it around the world.
I only had time to Brussels itself, but I can tell you the brewery to see there is Cantillon Brewery (they have a website), it’s one of the last all natural breweries around and they let you tour the brewery and do a tasting. I think the city of Bruge is a good stop for beer and quaintness.
Of course the waffles and “french” fries are great in Belgium as well!

Oh and I found English to be extremely widely spoken and understood, but if you know any French than you can practice in half the country! (the other half is Flemish and will be super offended - they have extreme language/culture divisions in Belgium)

One other insider tip: The Parking garage “58″, you can go to the top and it’s an amazing view of the whole city! Go at sunset for an extra special view. (Google will help you find it)

Get yourself to Brugges, Belgium. I’ve done quite a bit of world travel and NOTHING says romance like this little town. Beer, chocolate, lace… Spend day or two in Brussels, but you can slow down and enjoy all that Belgium does well in Brugges.

@caybaybay:
@jen625:
I went to Belgium after college with friends and had a blast. Brugges & the Cantillion Brewery were definitely among the highlights for me. I also think Miss Mole would love the shopping in Antwerp! My favorite was visiting the Rodenbach Brewery and seeing our dog’s namesake Tom Boonen race in the Tour of Flanders. -Mr Mole

@caybaybay: Wow, thanks for all of the great advice! I am definitely saving that info. I traveled through a lot of western Europe in college, but I never made it to Belgium. It’s definitely on my to-do list!
@jen625: Beer, chocolate, lace - some of my favorite things. Haha. Thanks!
@jeffexpress: I think I would like the shopping, as I say that with various online retail websites open in the background.

I know a lot of people plan adventurous honeymoons, but all I am thinking about after the wedding craziness is being able to relax on the beach while drinking delicious fruity drinks. I spent a month in Italy and while I had the time of my life (and can’t wait to plan my next vacation back), I felt the need to see EVERYTHING and it was exhausting. All I want to do on my honeymoon is relax. Europe will have be one of those anniversary trips we take later down the road. :)

You could do a long weekend in Mexico right after the weekend and go to Europe later in the year when you have more vacation!

@TinyTina: I agree with that feeling! I spent my junior year of college abroad, and I did a lot of trips around Western Europe. I packed those trips in with all of the recommended sights, and I was exhausted after I returned to school! I’d like to recharge on my honeymoon, not run myself into the ground. :)
@Future Army Wife: I think that is looking like it will be the plan! I like it because it will give us something to look forward to.
@Cecilia: Paris is really romantic! I went there with an ex once, though! Ha!
