Beautifying Myself

November 25th, 2011 @ 10:31 am by Miss Elk

On a regular day my makeup routine consists of concealer and eyeliner, if I have made it out of bed with enough time to do even that much! So why would I decide to DIY makeup for my wedding day, you might ask? Well…it’s pretty simple. I don’t really trust other people to do it better than I can. You see, I have really deep-set eyes, which give the illusion of dark circles very regularly. I feel that most makeup artists on the wedding circuit like to use dark eyeshadow to give that smokey eye, and that is exactly what I do not want. That makes me look like I haven’t slept in days, and so I decided to see what I could whip up for a wedding-day look on my own!

My inspiration: Lucy Hale. Love the dark defined lash line contrasted with the very light eyeshadow! Also love the pink lips with minimal blush.

Step #1: Coverup and foundation. I use Covermark concealer on my eyes, since they are so deep set and therefore dark. I use Almay Smartshade foundation—goes on very smooth. Here you can see makeup on the left side of the photo and no makeup on the right side of the photo.

Here I finished my concealer and foundation on the other side:

Step #2: Eyeliner. I used cheap black eyeliner on the outer portion of my lower lash line and the entire upper lash line on the right side of the picture:

Step #3: Highlighter. I used a shimmery white eyeshadow to highlight the entire lid of my eye up to the brow and brushed it into the inside corner of my eye as well.

Step #4: Eyeshadow. I used MAC Pink Freeze—I also used a little below my eyes to decrease the look of dark circles.

Step #5: Mascara. I used Maybelline Lash Stiletto for length and LashBlast for volume—I think I would use false eyelashes, though, on the real day to get the full effect.

Step #6: Blush. I only own one blush, which I bought in eighth grade. It is Stila Convertible Colors in the shade Camellia.

Step #7: Lipstick. I have some random Sephora lipstick that I always try to wear, but once it’s on I hate it. Someone in high school told me I look like a duck with lipstick on, and I’ve never been able to get over that, but here is my effort to wear it:

As predicted I hated the lipstick and took it off just as quick as it went on. Here I am with the completed look on both sides:

I’m not sure I’m 100% in love with this. I think false eyelashes will make a big difference, as I can barely tell I’m wearing mascara in that last picture, but maybe I shouldn’t judge a pro before I’ve had a trial.

Did you DIY your makeup? How did it come out?

And do you think my attempt was a success, or should I leave it to the pros?

Hello. You are cute girl with a good pallet to work with. But you will need a slightly heavier touch with the makeup on your day. Natural will look like no makeup on and you want to look beautiful on your wedding day not like every other time you put makeup on. play at the drawing board a little more.

I think you did a pretty good job! But I’d do a trial with a pro and compare. Just be sure to tell them *exactly* what you want and don’t let them talk you into shades or combinations you really don’t like. You could even go to a department store and see what they can do for you, without committing to buying anything just to see what color combinations or techniques you like.

Pros tend to have high quality makeup which will last the whole day or night. I thought about doing my own makeup to save cost and to get the look I want, but I realize I’m not exactly up to task since I don’t really wear much makeup day to day and do not have all the products. Foundation and shading really blows my mind.

I’m cursed with dark undereye circles as well (thanks Mediterranean mom!), but I’ve found that adding concealer and setting it with a matte powder really covers it up. I think you should avoid any shininess or glitter or the lower eye since it brings attention to that area.

I’ve never heard of Covermark concealer, I’m going to have to look into it because your undereye area looks great in the “after” pictures - I have similar coloring and really struggle to cover up the blue/purple color that results when I don’t get enough sleep. I used all Mary Kay products on my wedding day after meeting with an MK consultant who taught me how to get the look I wanted.

You did a great job on your makeup (much better than I could do) but my advice is to leave it to a pro, they can do so many tricks and I’m really loving the airbrush makeup!

I think your makeup looks great, but I think you need a little more just to show up in pictures (I’m also a blush whore though, so that might have something to do with it).

Being very honest here…pink is not the right choice. Also, the shadows you’re using are really glittery and I think you’d be much better off with more of a shimmer or a matte shadow. The under-eye shadow is a good idea in theory, but you have to be extremely careful with the placement. I did my own make-up for my wedding (post on my old wedding blog here: http://burningriverbride.blogspot.com/2010/05/make-me-up-before-you-go-go.html) so I can speak from experience that you really, really must know what you’re doing. Now, personally I wanted a dramatic dark eye, but I totally get it’s not for everyone. The picture of Lucy is beautiful, but even though it doesn’t look like it, she is wearing a LOT of make up and her eye is really very dark.

My suggestions is to buy something like this (maybe not this exact one, but along these lines):
http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_detail.jsp?filterBy=&skuId=477336&productId=477336&navAction=push&navCount=6&no_new_crumb=true

And then just practice. Wear make up more often than you normally would so you know what you’re doing come wedding day. Practicing a few times isn’t going to make you comfortable, you have to really figure out what you’re doing. Again, from experience, it will take you longer than you think to do your own make up. I wear a full face every day so I knew what I was doing and just amped it up for the wedding, but it took me a good hour to put on my face because of all the interruptions that inevitably happen.

I’m a total advocate of DIY make up and with practice I think you can absolutely pull it off! (And save a crap-ton of money.) Good luck!!

The makeup thing freaked me out, since I wear nothing but mascara and a little concealer every day. It took a lot of convincing from my makeup lady to go a little heavier and you know what? Totes worth it.

Going to second what all of the ladies above me said - you look great, but you’ll need heavier makeup for the big day!

Also, seconding what was said about trying with a pro (maybe at a dept. store) and get recommendations, especially if you’re having trouble with lipstick :P

Wait. You just wear concealer and eyeliner? Is that all you’re wearing in your Bee headshot? WOW!

I’m all thumbs with make up…I’d say go get a make up lesson at a salon or make up counter and have the artist teach you what they’d do for a wedding. I bet they’d share a few tricks. :)

I’d definitely schedule a lesson with a pro if I was DIY-ing it…if you don’t like what they show you you can tweak it yourself and if you do like what they do you can decide if you want to hire them to do it for you the day of. I had a professional do my makeup the day of and I think it was definitely worth it. I had been so stressed the previous days that it was nice to have a little time to just sit back, be pampered and not worry about messing it up or not putting on enough to show up in the pictures. Also, if nothing else, a professional can give you some good recommendations on new products to buy/try. I think if you’re DIY-ing your makeup you should at least invest in some new product so you’re not wearing 10-yr old blush. A lot of makeup counters will even give you free trial sizes of their makeup, if you don’t ever plan on using some things after the wedding maybe that’s the way to go.

I don’t trust myself to do my own make-up. And it looks nice. Have you tried filling in the bottom eyeliner the whole way across?

I hate lipstick as well, but I have found that if I need a little bit of color, a tinted lip balm (aka chapstick) works great. It doesn’t feel odd and it looks more normal. For fake lashes, they can be a bit much if you have never worn them before. You might want to try the individual fake lashes. They are little groups of lashes instead of one long line. They don’t feel as heavy.
