Making It Up

November 25th, 2011 @ 12:56 pm by Miss Unicycle

My approach to makeup (and many other things, now that you mention it) is to just try random things and see if they work. I have no idea how to actually put on mascara, though I wear it every day. I literally don’t know the difference between powder, concealer, foundation, and anything else beige-y that you put on your skin. So my “Makeup Ideas” pinboard on Pinterest, despite being created months ago, only has two pins on it:

Clearly I like lots of eyelashes. I’ll tell my makeup artist to put huge falsies on me. Done and done. I also think I’m going to go au naturel on the skin tone, which of course doesn’t mean no powder/concealer/foundation—it means I’m going to show up looking pale as the day I was born. Mr. Unicycle always says he doesn’t like it when I use self-tanner or bronzer, not that I ever do a good enough job for it to make a difference anyway. I’m naturally very white. I’ve never met a whiter person in my life, except my little brother when he was a few hours old. So, since I’m naturally fair and Mr. Unicycle likes it that way, I might as well go with the flow. The lovely ladies above are both pretty white, too, and they look hawt!

Now what are your thoughts on lipstick? When I was a kid I would frequently give myself makeovers (but only in the privacy of my own home—I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup in public until high school), and they always included lipstick. I just thought that’s what all women wore when they did their makeup in the morning. Well, it was the ’90s, so maybe I was right? When I finally started wearing makeup fo’ realz, I never wore lipstick, and no one else did either. Here’s a rare photo of me with lipstick on:

Personal photo

At my bro’s wedding in January. I wore bright red lipstick, which you can barely even see. I am small of lip.

Lately I’ve been wanting to get in on the lipstick trend more and more. I read a few bloggers who wear lipstick regularly, and they look so…cool. That’s the only word I can think of to describe it. Lipstick doesn’t scream “’90s powersuit woman” anymore.

Not a good look. Maybe in 10 years this’ll be a good look again. But right now, not a good look.

Lipstick suddenly looks cool again, see?

She must own like 50 shades of lipstick, and they all look good on her. Not. Fair.

I love her whole look, especially that she makes her own clothing. And of course, the ubiquitous lipstick.

A few weeks ago I broke down and actually purchased my first tube of lipstick since the ’90s, and, believe it or not, I’m wearing some as I type this. See?

Personal pic, obviously

I was having trouble taking a selfie and my teenage brother stereotypically suggested a mirror shot. It worked! Although the lipstick isn’t very obvious in this lighting.

I’m not sure if I like wearing lipstick or not. I’m realizing now that I have an oddly small, narrow mouth, something I never noticed in my pre-lipstick days. I also have a tendency to chew my lips, which is difficult to do when there’s lipstick in the way (I guess this is a good thing?). And I felt like I had to downplay the eye makeup in order to accommodate the In Yo’ Face lips, but I just ended up looking tired yet oddly made up. Maybe this just isn’t my color?

So the age-old debate of whether or not to wear lipstick on my wedding day is still undecided. What do you think? Should I go all out and be fancy on my wedding day? Or should I try to look like “a better version of myself,” whatever that means?

hello fellow lip chewer! lol i’m not a fan of lipstick, it just looks weird on me, but i do still like a bit of color so enter lip stains here. amazing. they are subtle, here’s no way you can mess them up, often look more natural, and you can put chap-stick or gloss over them (which is a major plus!). so that’s my vote…with some fabulous lashes of course!!!

I always wear lipstick… that’s my one go-to makeup when I want to look put together. I tend to choose natural or light shades so it’s not overpowering or attention grabbing.

I’m a big fan of colored lip gloss as well… enough to give your lips a bit of a tint without being too much.

I think it is so strange how lipstick goes in and out of fashion. I haven’t worn it in years. I have my trial soon and wonder what I’ll end up with! But if you decide to go all out dramatic with the eye, you’ll need a toned down lip. Are you wearing lip liner in your pic? That is supposed to help fill it out and could help make your lips appear fuller. Do people wear lip liner anymore?!

I don’t wear lipstick (gloss, all the way) but a good shade can do wonders for you. Love the falsies. They look fabulous in pictures!

My lips are pretty big and lipstick makes me look…well, the only way to say it is whore-y. I think your “oddly small, narrow mouth” as you call it, looks lovely with lipstick. It’s really cute and I’m jealous! I’ll be trying the lipstain route but if it doesn’t work, it’s Burt’s Bees for me on the day of the wedding.

I feel old. ;) I always wear lipstick. I can’t imagine not wearing it. I’m a creature of habit, unfortunately. When I find a color that works, I buy it until the company discontinues it.

@ms. headphone: Whore-y lol, I love it. I’m the same, very large of lip.

I generally don’t wear lipstick, because I have quite dark lips compared to my skin colour, if that makes sense. I don’t have pale lips. I normally just slick on a bit of clear or lightly tinted lip balm, nothing too shiny.

Play around with matte vs. shiny lipstick, you might find one works better than the other. I’d suggest if you aren’t big on wearing foundation that shiny lips would be harder to pull off than matte.

I don’t think you have tiny lips at all! I found a great coral-y shade that I loved over the summer, but I’m looking for something to wear into the winter that’s a bit more appropriate. Lip stains really appeal to me, as I’m lazy about touch-ups throughout the day. If it lasts the entirety of your wedding day surely that’s perfect? and no lipstick on your groom in the photos…

Well, like you I am fair of skin… but even fairer of mouth. Seriously… my lips look dead before I put lipstick on in the morning… they are seriously like lighter than my skin. :P

If you aren’t used to wearing lipstick but want some for the big day, I would really recommend a natural shade just to give you some shine and gloss. I really love Maybelline’s 24-hour stay lipsticks with the colour and gloss sides. I have many of the lighter colours which give my lips some great life and then the gloss gives everything a real shine. (I also have their red which is the only way I’d ever recommend wearing a dark/bright colour!) Seriously… not having to worry (as much) about biting your lips/eating/kissing while wearing lipstick is soooo handy. Especially because you know you’ll be kissing Mr. U a ton on the big day! Also look into lipstains… they might give you the colour you want without being a hindrance with kissing/eating. Josie Maran has some nice lipstains but I think there are a ton of companies that make them.

@Miss Sunhat: I was wondering about lip liner too! I dont think I have to skillz to apply it correctly though hahahha

@raevnn: Maybe the wedding will be my motivation to stop chewing my lips up. I’m doing it as I type this though…

I looooove that second picture you put up, so pretty! And I think you look fabulous with lipstick on! You seriously pull it off! Seriously, you kind of make me want to experiment now. I’ve never been big on it personally, because I feel like it looks so weird and unnatural, and I have fairly colored lips anyway, so it doesn’t seem necessary. Plus my SO doesn’t like lipsticked kisses!

I know nothing about makeup, too, and still have no idea how to use eyeliner (though I try). And that red lip color at the wedding is hot! Rock that :)

I hate lip stick!!! Although everyone says I’m going to want to wear it on my wedding day for photographs, I still have my doutbs. I’ve enlisted a friend that does make up to help me find a natural color, maybe a light pink, but I haven’t decided if I’m in on the whole idea. I just hate how it looks on me.

I hate lipstick and know nothing about makeup. I’m lucky if I put some lip gloss on in the morning. I’m just trusting my MUA to make me look good since I have no idea what works on me!

I don’t wear lipstick either. I have hardly any upper lip whatsoever and my bottom lip is, well, very small too. And I also bite my lips, and they are always chapped, so at least I wear chapstick when I need it? But chapped lips + lipstick = not a good look. So, small barely there lips+ chapped lips = probably no lipstick for me on my big day.

#1 I don’t think your lips are unusual.

#2 You should consider your theme when considering lipstick, and the fact that lipstick comes in a wide variety of colors, weights and textures

Like you, I’m super pale. I joke that “I’m so white, I’m practically clear.” I don’t wear make up on a daily basis, but when I do. I use a foundation very, very, slightly darker than my natural color to even out my skin. For job interviews and funerals I lean toward gray eyeshadow and barely more berry than nude lipstick. For going out, the sky’s the limit with eyeshadow and eyelashes, and I love a deep blue toned red lipstick. Still deciding if I’m bold enough to do a red lip for my wedding, it will have a retro theme which makes me lean that way, but I don’t want to give old ladies heart attacks…
