The South has definitely earned a special place in my heart (alongside my Virginia born and bred fiance, of course!). We are planning a traditional Christian ceremony at my alma mater in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, followed by a rocking reception filled with Southern cooking and vintage/shabby chic details. When we’re not wedding planning, we enjoy spending time with our three dogs, going for runs together, watching plenty of football (or baseball depending on the season), and sampling new wine.

Let’s Talk about the Tunes

November 27th, 2011 @ 2:10 pm by Miss Hawk

I am quite the little music enthusiast. From country to hip hop and oldies to contemporary rock, I love it all. And although I consider myself an equal opportunity music enjoyer, I still have somewhat of a “discerning taste.”  So when Mr. Hawk and I started discussing our music options, we knew that we wanted to go the DJ route for the ability to enjoy a plethora of music styles. But at the same time we didn’t want just anyone behind the DJ booth. We wanted to avoid the super-cheeseball DJ that would turn our wedding into his own personal stage. (Yes, I’m looking at you, Pauly D. I may be fascinated by the train wreck that is Jersey Shore, but stay away from my wedding!)

I think I really hit the nail on the head when I found Liz Daley of Liz Daley Events. She came with tons of glowing recommendations, and when Mr. Hawk and I first met with Liz for our initial consultation, I instantly got good vibes. She was so personable and enthusiastic, but at the same time she was professional and meticulously organized. During our consultation she showed us videos from previous weddings she had worked, and we were able to view a small sampling of her incredibly expansive music library. She detailed her equipment and setup and even let us know about her in-case-of-emergency backup plans. She really eased any fears I had. But I think what really sold me on Liz was her focus on us and how we could tailor the reception to be very personal and unique to us as a couple. She was all about making the event an unforgettable experience, where everyone would leave thinking, “That was just so Miss Hawk and Mr. Hawk!” I knew with Liz that our reception wasn’t going to be a cookie-cutter experience. After our consultation, I immediately quit my search. I knew I had found everything I was looking for (and MORE!).

I have a top-secret-for-now project up my sleeves to work on with Liz over the coming months, but hopefully I can share a few more details on that in the near future.

How was your journey to find wedding entertainment? Was it slow going or easy-peasy like my experience?

The DJ was key for me!! Luckily a friend’s brother is a fantastic DJ- we’d seen him at her wedding and at another friend’s wedding (which was on Four Weddings), and he did such a great job of playing fantastic music and keeping everyone dancing without being a cheeseball or the center of attention. He was pricey, almost double what we’d hoped to spend on the music, but after talking to a couple other DJ’s that were definitely more on the Pauly D side (maybe because this is Jersey?), I knew he was the right choice.

We are having a brunch reception, so no DJ or the band that I wanted. When I inquired with a musician friend about getting a string quartet he offered to pay for it as our gift! I was blown away by the generosity and, of course, accepted. I’m very excited to have some nice live music at the reception even if it is a casual brunch.

I pretty much made our tune list and handed it over to the DJ. He followed it to the tee. Basically, he had the easiest frigging gig EVER at our wedding. :)

I actually have a post about our music choices coming up. We are picky. Super, super picky. But, our search didn’t take nearly as long as I thought it would.

@pinkfrog: I’m glad to hear you were able to find someone great and avoid the Pauly D’s of the DJ world!

@Mrs. Seal: I’m excited to share verrrry soon.

@Lexy: A string quartet will be lovely and classy for a brunch reception!

@Mrs. Jaguar: I have a feeling that I may also become super-detailed when it comes time to make actual selections even though I trust her. :)

I have to say hiring our DJ was the easiest part of wedding planning. My aunt got married a few months before we got engaged. Even though we had a 2 year engagement we booked with her DJ right away and pretty much said, “Recreate her wedding. It was AWESOME.”
